Worth going. However try to go before March, because when the pinguins leave, they leave. We went on the first week of April and they told us there were about 2,000 penguins left on the island (from a colony of about 150,000). However we only got to see a few. Yet it was worth it. We also got to see the sea lions, and had a great welcoming by dolphins.

We did this trip in the beginning of April 2014. The weather was nice and the trip went ahead without problems. We saw quite a few penguins, but they told us that many of them have already left to go to warmer waters. Apparently some always stay behind, but I guess you'd see more penguins if you go earlier.

A cool experience to see all the seals and sea birds at Isla Marta as well. As a nice bonus our boat was followed by a group of dolphins on the way back, so the sights on this trip was pretty spectacular :)

I wish the woman working in the office could've been a little more serviceminded and positive, even though she answered all the questions we had professionally.

The boat is very comfortable since all the seats are inside so you won't have to feel the wind and water spray. This means that the outside deck space is very limited, so if something exciting happens (like a group of dolphins turning up), the outside space might feel pretty cramped.

All in all a good experience I would recommend if you're in Punta Arenas with half a day to spare and you're not on a super tight budget.

Fun little trip and who doesn't love to see penguins-lots of them!
Dress really warm.
Hot coffee was really appreciated when we returned to the boat.

The experience is certainly nice and memorable. We bought our ticket in advance which prevented us from doing a 30-40 people line.

The tour operator we used was COMAPA which charges $28.000 per person. Another quote that we got was from SOLO Expediciones which charges $44.000 per person. Both prices seem high to me considering there is no audio guide tour or even an active tour guide.

Nevertheless, the experience is very nice and should be done without hesitation.

You can get really close to the penguins and see a bit of their social behavior. The island itself is pretty breathtaking. You get to feel like you are in a piece of land in the middle of nowhere.

It was very windy the day we went to Isla Magdalena. (50 knots, or about 57 mph or 90 kph) The wind kicked up the swells in the strait, so the boat rocked all over the place. There were people grabbing for the barf bags...

When we finally got to the island, they came on the loudspeaker and announced that it was too windy to approach, but they wanted to wait a little while to see if the wind would slow down enough to give them an opportunity. So we waited in the boat for about 30 minutes more as it rocked up and down and side to side. Finally they did manage to pull the boat up to the dock, and they said we can get off for 15 minutes.

Unfortunately, the wind made this pretty unpleasant because it felt like being sandblasted. It blew into your eyes, ears, nose, inside your jacket, etc. Most of the penguins were either in their nests or hunting (?) so there really wasn't much to see anyway.

Then we got back on the boat for another 2 hours of being tossed around on the waves.

If we ever get back to Punta Arenas, I would love to try this again on a calmer day. If it is a very windy day, you might think twice about this and perhaps go to Otway instead.
