“Once was enough ...”
3 of 5 bubbles Reviewed June 8, 2013

This was our second visit to a rookery during our S.A. cruise and, while we enjoyed it, it certainly was not our favorite. The ferry/boat ride from the dock to the island was long ... very long which didn't help. Once we arrived, the wind whipping across the island was strong enough to knock you over. Granted, there are lots of penguins to see (and they aren't timid at all), but that's all there is to see. If you're into photographing penguins, then you'll be in seventh heaven. If not, then a quick walk up to the lighthouse and back will satisfy any curiosity you had about penguins. Along the way, you can see them stand, watch them poop, watch them walk, watch them stand, watch them sit in their burrows, watch them stand and, did I mention, watch them stand? You get the picture. No doubt, it probably would have been better if we had been there when the little ones were around.

“Great day and wonderful tour!”
5 of 5 bubbles Reviewed May 18, 2013

We visited Punta Arenas as part of a cruise around South America. Our day tour was through Solo Expeditions and a number of passengers from our ship accompanied us. We meet at the tour office in town and departed at 10:15am. We had a great day, the weather was sunny and warm, the straight calm perfect for a boat/zodiac ride. Firstly we visited Santa Marta island where we saw numerous sea lions & harems, large colony of cormorants birds and gulls. (We viewed from off shore for 20 minutes). We then proceeded to Magdalena Island where we landed and toured for 90 minutes. It was great to walk amongst the penguins, see their natural habitat, many were sunning, others lying in their nests and others walking about to and from the beach. Unfortunately the babies had already departed and the adults were molting. The tour company served refreshments before we returned to the city arriving around 3:30pm. Awesome day!

“Thousands of penguins”
4 of 5 bubbles Reviewed April 13, 2013

I guess you have to go at the right time do the year but we saw thousands of penguins mid March.
They were everywhere and didn't seem timid. There is a walking path roped off to walk around and view these little cuties. We went with SOLO and unfortunately there was very little English explanation but we still enjoyed the trip. You do need to be quite agile to get on and off the little speed boat though.

“Unbelievable Experience!”
5 of 5 bubbles Reviewed April 12, 2013

Ever walked among thousands of penguins in their natural habitat. Ever had to stop walking to let a group of penguins cross the path in front of you? Ever seen a penguin peck someone's heel because it was standing too close to its home?
The day we went, the wind was blowing between 60-80 mph, and penguin life went about as normal.

If you get the chance, visit this island...you won't be disappointed.

“Great boat trip across Magellan Straits to see penguins”
5 of 5 bubbles Reviewed April 7, 2013

I loved crossing the historic Magellan Straits but even better than that were the thousands of Magellan penguins waddling around, diving into the water, or their nests. Some of the young had not shed their baby feathers so the colony was not yet ready to depart. Very lucky to see them at the end of March!
Visitors have to stay on designated paths but this does not restrict access the the penguins which often cross the path right in front of you. And lots have nests right beside the path
