“Not quite a castle but good enough!”
4 of 5 bubbles Reviewed April 25, 2013

I wasn’t expecting much when overnighting in Puerto Natales at Hostal Alcazar before transferring to Torres Del Paine in late November 2012. I didn’t realize when booking, but the hostel is conveniently located near the bus terminal for the bus from Calafate (Argentina), slightly downhill and only about 2 blocks away (see the attached tourist map from the bus terminal info desk). Some posts worried about the surrounding neighborhood – sure houses are a bit run-down but it’s not much better in other parts of town, and I felt quite safe walking from the hotel to the main town center (maybe 10-15 min walk). The front desk staff were friendly and helpful enough. I was happy with my 2nd floor room, which was larger than I expected for a “hostal”. It was clean and well kept with a large, comfortable bed and large windows overlooking the street (not much of a view though). There was no in-room safe and no closet, but a wardrobe. The bathroom was more compact with a shower and no bath, but again clean and well maintained. Maybe my only complaint was the included breakfast, which was very basic. “Alcazar” conjures up images of a castle - it wasn’t, but I thought it was good enough and much better than my expectations.

We had a reservation at another hostel and they lost our reservation and sold our room to someone else. They helped us find a new hostel and placed us at Alcazar. Alcazar was clean and spacious. The rooms were pretty noisy, in the AM we could hear the folks next door talk, whisper, shower, pack, listen to music, etc. Breakfast was toast, cheese, yogurt and some sort of bologna...not amazing but pretty par for the course at most hostels.

The staff was very very helpful and understanding given our sudden appearance on their doorstep looking for a room!

Very decent and nicely organized small hotel. Great value. Good showers and good breakfast. Most hostels and small hotels are huddled between the ferry and the town center. However this one was worth the small effort to find it. In the suburbs you suddenly see this modern hotel frontage. We were very happy to stay there.

Stayed at Alcazar for 3 nights and it really reminded me of an old fashioned hostel. Staff smiled and greeted us every time we entered. They were always pleasant and helpful whether it was booking a tour to Torres del Paine, storing our luggage, or with anything else we needed. One person spoke a little English which made things easier for us.

Breakfast is standard continental Chilean, however, buffet so you can eat as much as you want and there is a toaster for use. They let us use their fridge to store our food and chill our water - even gave us ice for drinks. The dining area is open to all guests night and day if you want to eat your own food and/or have purchased something from the grocery store. We frequently used their plates/cutlery and we were instructed to leave the dirty plates in the kitchen sink where someone washed them up for us. They are very accommodating and in my books that's pretty good service.

Rooms are small but clean. They have a problem with the plumbing as there's never cold water and sometimes the toilet/bathroom stunk like an outhouse. We quickly figured out that if the toilet didn't fill all the way it created a vacuum and odour came in from the stack. So we made sure that the toilet flushed and sure enough the odour went away. Rooms are cleaned everyday with fresh towels and toiletries. Most places that we stayed in while travelling in Chile did not give us clean towels daily and there were seldom toiletries provided.

Location is in a quiet residential neighborhood 5-7 minutes’ walk from everything including bus depot, groceries, alcohol, restaurants and shops. Nothing in Puerto Natales is cheap as it’s a tourist town for those going to Torres de Paine. This place is nothing fancy however price is reasonable and there is value for your money.

Stayed at this hotel for one night around Christmas, and if you don´t expect too much, it´s just perfectly alright and very priceworthy I believe. Rooms are small, but beds comfortable and bathroom just fine. (Except that the tap in our basin started running when the person in the room next door flushed his toilet...) The walls are very thin (as they are in hotels everywhere in Southamerica...) and we had the dubious pleasure of hearing the neighbour clearing his throat by building it up from the toes...

Poor breakfast and boring breakfast room, but the lobby area welcoming and the guy who was there when we arrived was very helpful and spoke good english. (He also helped us sorting out a transportation who was supposed to leave early the following morning, which enabled us to stay on the premises for another 30 minutes, which is worth a lot early in the morning.) Free WiFi in all the rooms.

Overall a good - and cheap! - stay, in a typical "transit city", where all you do basically is to kill some time before travelling further on.

I think that this property is overrated and that previous positive comments are mostly based on price.
Although it may be a good option for travellers on a tight budget, this hostal is not centrally located.
Except for Javier who is extremely helpful and kind, the other members of the staff are unattentive and rude.
Rooms are tiny, the tv very small. Neither chairs nor hairdressers inside them. They are to sleep and run away fastly. Beds are comfortable but as walls are not rightly glued to the ceilings you can see when lights are switched on in the next room and you can hear talking and the tvs in the near rooms. Sleep quality diminishes.
Breakfast is limited. In fact, there are no many arguments to stay there besides the low daily rates.

We stayed here having read that it had a four star rating on Tripadvisor. Well, we were very dissappointed as it is not a four star but more a two star stay. When I read the feedback more closely I realised that the dates were very far appart and I should have paid more attention.

It is a large hotel but the rooms are very small and dark, old fashioned and basic with thin walls. Breakfast was sparse and dismal. Wifi was poor.

The staff spoke very little English which caused some communication problems. Yes, I know we should be able to speak spanish, but if my business was in tourism I would make sure I could communicate with my visitors.

We were asked to pay in advance for a second nights stay that we needed the following week. We paid on credit card without really thinking. Having seen the room and stayed one night we realised that there was no way we would stay a second night.

Trying to cancel the room the next morning was problematic but fortunately the host of our next B&B arrived and helped us to come to a solution. The only solution to be found was that we would have to stay the second night as the hotel couldn't arrange a refund onto our credit card. It was the most miserable night we have spent in over 3months of travelling.

So, top tip, do not pay in advance and check your room first. There are cheaper places to stay in town that are far more comfortable and welcoming.

Room Tip: Don't have number 10
