“Hikers Haven”
Reviewed February 10, 2013

Easy to meet fellow hikers and share stories, get advice here. Bill and the team are fun, friendly and easy going, always willing to help you plan your Torres del Paine hike and advise on other activities around Puerto Natales. They have all the local knowledge so just ask!

The hostel is warm and cosy, has a TV and lots of videos to watch. The kitchen is amazingly well equipped to store food and share left overs and a good place to meet people.

Breakfast is hearty and delicious.

The floorboards are creaky so it can get a little noisy when groups of people are coming and going late or early.

the hostel is an easy walk to three grocery stores, the laundrette and bus stop. The bus from Torres del Paine drops you off right at the hostel after the hike.

Room Tip: There is only one double room. Book in advance in high season (December-March).

Fantastic gateway to the Torres del Paine national park. Staff are excellent and very helpful. Shout out to Bill, who throws great chat in the mornings over breakfast. The 3pm talk which is held every day next door is a good way to understand the trek. Book well in advance because the hostel is very popular, which makes it a good place to meet and discuss hot tips for the trek! We noticed a lot of other travellers coming from other hostels and asking for availability last minute due to popularity, which is no surprise because the breakfast is too good to be true. Best hostel breakfast - it is alllll time. If you are Staying in 'the cave', a small room off the kitchen, you may need ear plugs because Trekkers leave early in the morning and have breakfast outside your door. Not a big deal though. Erratic rock hire Out great equipment, so send them an email to check whether they have gear you need to save you from buying your own and carting it around. Hostel is very clean.

Thanks !

Loved the place. clean, quiet, attentive and friendly staff, great breakfast, excellent value. Love the two house cats Bonnie & Clyde. This was the best place we stayed at in South Patagonia. Highly recommended for a stay/stop before and after a Torres del Paine trek.

I stayed here based on friend's recommendation and I have consequently referred everybody I met to this place. Granted the place is a bit small, I had a private single room, which contained a full size bed and that's about it, but that is all I need from a hostel. The reason I'm giving them 5 stars is the incredible helpfulness of the staff. Before I went, I sent them a few emails with loads of questions about the Torres del Paine and they patiently answered my question in a very timely matter, instead of just saying "come to our 3pm meeting". The 3pm meeting was very informative and Bill is one of those (few) people, who really enjoy what they do. He was happily making omelette for his guests at 7am in the morning, chatting and giving advice.

Great hostel! Loved the private double room. Met some really nice, friendly people who shared their Torres del Paine stories and tips. Great place to stay before and after hiking. Super friendly staff...they even baked cookies and shared them with the hostel patrons when I was there!

The only thing I didn't really like was that at the '3 o'clock talk' (which is an awesome discussion about the Torres del Paine hike) they were very firm on how they recommended doing the hike. They strongly recommend you go from left to right and base the discussion on that. They have a good reason for this - that way your pack is lightest on the most uphill part which is the Torres. At the talk they also keep talking about how unpredictable the weather is and how you shouldn't base your plans on the weather cause it can change at any time. Well the day we went to the park it was beautiful and sunny. At the ranger station the guides there told us in two days the weather would turn - it was gonna get highly windy, rainy, and even may snow. The park rangers recommended we go right to left to see the best parts - The Torres & the Valley de Frances while the weather was still good. We made a last minute call and took there advice - which saved our trip! We had two amazing days of sunshine and got to see the two most beautiful parts of the hike. Just as the rangers predicted the weather turned and everyone who took the "go left to right, dont pay attention to the weather" missed the Valley and the Torres cause it was too cloudy to see anything. We really lucked out and in my option Patagonia is Patagonia - the weather can change at any moment. But, if there are some predictions out there, you are better off following those then nothing.

I got Erratic Rock recommended to me by 3 different fellow travelers, so tested their judgement. The truth is that getting there, that feeling got confirmed, I had a very warm welcome. I was doubting about leaving the next day to to the W, but as I was going to do it alone and only arrived at 9pm, things were a bit tight. Ruth gave a quick overview of their 3 o'clock talk and reassured me.
Their are a few reasons why they only score average for me:
* rooms are small, there isn't even space to put everyones stuff inside the room. There are only very small lockers underneath the benches in the common room.
* I wasn't informed there was no hot water before 8am, so had to take an ice-cold shower before leaving on the trek.
* I was very unlucky with the fellow people staying there, as they didn't consider people were actually getting up at 6am to go trekking, so barging in at 2am and at 4am without consideration wasn't an abnormality.

I have to say, Bill and his staff are great people though!

Erratic Rock is a great option if you're staying in Puerto Natales. The rooms are far from spacious, but this is made up for by the laid back vibe of the hostel itself.

The pub next door offers cheap food and beer, and the book exchange is great as well.

Breakfast was -- as advertised on the website -- a hiker's breakfast! It was hearty and delicious. The staff at the hostel are friendly, knowledgeable, and helpful.

Erratic Rock was, hands down, the best hostel I stayed at in Chile.
