“No Thank You! Once was more than enough!”
Reviewed March 7, 2011

After staying in fantastic America del Sur Hostel in El Calafate, Argentina, this place certainly was a major let down. When we rolled up outside the hostel, it looked good but the surrounding dwellings made us feel very uneasy and nervous about leaving our hire car in the street. See my photo of what's right next door! The 'couldn't care less' attitude of the young man and, later on, the young woman at the front desk and the very ordinary and dreary bunk bed plus single bed room with its narrow window that looks onto a side alley made us very glad that this was only a one night stay. Maybe we just struck it unlucky! As we were leaving the hostel, we spotted a double bedroom that looked a lot nicer than the 'hole in the wall' that we got. The upstairs breakfast and lounge area was bright and cheerful looking and the breakfast on offer was good but this couldn't make up for our depressing little room, the service we received from the front desk staff and the unsafe looking surroundings in which the hostel is located..

For a hostel the rooms are very comfy, some with bathrooms - more like a cosy posada for couples. The staff were great, polite and enthusiastic, giving us lots of tips and help organising our trip to Torres del Paine. We rented here quite good gear and got info on where to get best supplies in town.
Do prepare for an early start as you can hear everything from the kitchen/breakfast room above the rooms - no problem on your way to Torres but when we got back we could have done with a long lay in!

Dorm rooms are spacious: no bunkbeds in our dorm in the building next door. Kitchen is big, breakfast is good (fresh wholeweat bread and cereal) and the have a daily briefing on Torres del Paine where they explain all your options. They also rent out equipment. When we where there it didn't feel crowded, even though they were fully booked. Ivan is great, he's really helpful!

Pros: good location. good kitchen. decent pricing.

Cons: The kitchen/eating area is above all of the rooms. The ceiling is made out of tissue paper/ply wood, so expect to be awake from 6am onwards from people stomping and walking about above you. In fact, it was so bad, my husband and I canceled our 7 nights and moved after 1 night. There are also 2 bathrooms in the entire place, that 2 dorms and 4 double rooms share. It's the only place in 4 months I had to wait to use the toilet--even in the middle of the night! After our terrible night sleep, we asked Marcela if another room was open, and the answer was automatically no...without even consulting the reservation book. So they lost a 7 night reservation from us. I thought her tone on emails was rude just because things were getting lost in translation from spanish to english. I was wrong. She is surly and rude all of the time. We should have taken note and booked elsewhere from the start. Breakfast is white bread and tang and instant coffee. Oh, and don't believe the photos on Trip Advisor. I think 1 of the rooms looks like that. We had a dark, smelly room. Our bed had a dirty/stained white blanket and pillows that were eaten up by dust mites. Major allergy attack!

Summary: Unless you can sleep anywhere/anytime, I do not recommend Lili's. It's sad because it has such potential...but a good night's sleep is priceless if you're coming/going to the park.

Stayed twice at this Hostal and enjoyed each stay. Although a little basic, its great value for money and the staff are really friendly and breakfast is just great with hot fresh rolls and great coffee. Everything is pretty much in walking distance with both bus companies (Gomez & Cootra) really close by - great when you're carry heavy bags!

Lili Patagonicos is a small, no-frills cosy little hostel. Our double room with private bathroom was basic yet nice. There is a lovely breakfast area, a lounge, and two PCs with free internet. Guests have all-day access to the kitchen whether you want to cook or make tea. The walls are a bit thin and we could hear the motion above our room but that didn’t bother us much. The guys who run the place are very hospitable and proactive, and can help with anything from TDP bus tickets to laundry, etc.

This hostal is run by an enthusiastic and helpful young staff who will work hard to make sure you enjoy your stay. Offering a full range of additional services including organising transfers, tours, equipment rental etc, and with excellent local knowledge, it will be easy to use this place as your Chilean Patagonian base. Ivan's carpentry skills create and authentic feel to the place. A zip line and mini climbing wall add to the credibility.
