Description: For ten thousand years the Aymaras and Quechuas, Andean cultures, have been present in the province of Tarapaca and have made this territory a natural route joining the high plains with the shores of the Pacific Ocean. From East to West the scenery is marked with peaks, lakes, salt flats, geysers, thermal fields, queñuas, yaretas, cactus, ichus, condors, huemules, guanaco, vicuñas, vizcachas, springs, canyons, coastal plains and an ocean abundant in fish and shellfish. The ancient Andean inhabitants marked their trails with apachetas (stone pyramids), tambos (resting sites), pucarás (fortresses), utas (houses), marcas (villages), terraced crops and their expression of rupestrian art, rock art and geoglyphs; the most famous being the “Gigante de Tarapacá” (Giant of Tarapaca) (19º 56’ 56.79” S 69º 38’ 01.08” W) The “Ruta del Gigante” (Giant’s Route) restaurant is an echo of the Andean world offering a variety of products from different altitudes generating flavors, textures, fragrances, hues and beauty of a unique cuisine identified with Mother Earth (Pacha Mama).A return to the original cuisine is recreated, based on natural products harvested from the sea and mountain ranges, seasoned with fragrant herbs, obtaining a world of sensations, incredible balsamic flavors and pleasant shades. In summary, it is a reunion with the immaterial Andean heritage.

I went with three colleagues to checkout Ruta del Gigante, that was then rated as restaurant #1 in Iquique. The place has nice décor and atmosphere, good service and interesting menu. The salad and appetizers were very good. The main coarse not so much. The presentation was very nice, but the meat was over cooked on all four dishes and it was hard to chew.

Delicious, traditional Chilean/Andean food at almost ridiculous prices. We don't like to repeat restaurants while traveling, but Ruta del Gigante was just too good not to visit again and again - each dish was better than the next. The perfect way to introduce a nervous eater to traditional food - you cannot go wrong with this place. The only thing that can pull your attention from the food is the exceptional service. An absolute gem in Iquique.

This new restaurant is run by people from the Andes. The menu contains only typical Andean dishes. The food was great. The owner explained with a lot of enthusiasm how each dish is prepared. A great place downtown!
