Diego de Almagro is a hotel that could be outstanding but the lacklustre staff is holding it back. The staff is very cold towards North American travellers and in a small northern town assistance is a must! The hotel is very overpriced despite low demand in the area. Don't be lured in by the pool and the fancy lobby. Support smaller businesses who are excited to assist travellers on their journeys!

We've had to go to Arica twice now, both times for work not tourism (and in all honesty, with so much to see in Chile, I would never put Arica on the bucket list). The first time we went we didn't have a car and stayed at the El Paso Park (a fairly grim 2 star at best); this time we had a car and hoped the Diego would provide better accommodation. And in this it definitely succeeded. If we have to return to Arica, this is where we will stay from here on out, unless something better comes to town. And it's actually less expensive than the El Paso; at $112 for the ocean view king we did not feel ripped off.

I was torn between 2 and 3 stars, and ultimately decided on 3 because it at least meets basic comfort needs better than anything else in town, imo. And at least you have that full-on, unobstructed view of the Pacific right out your window, and the magnificent sunsets that come with it; definitely get a room on the ocean side! The ocean view goes a long way towards compensating you for other deficiencies of the hotel.

I think the worst of these is the breakfast - it is not well managed, and if there is a conference going on, the room is swamped and the buffet set-up can be crowded. They don't clear/set-up new tables in a timely way, so in 4 mornings there we never found a table ready to go. I find the selection and quality of items fairly poor, although it is fairly typical of that chain, having stayed in other Diegos.

As for the room, it is a nice size - they are all the same - and the bathroom was clean and functional. One nice spot: at the elevator on each floor they've created a nice sitting alcove, with comfortable sofa and chairs, with the view onto the beach. It's a nice spot and gets you out of the room. There was enough English spoken by the various and friendly staff, and the parking is convenient and safe. Good restaurants are Rayu (close by) and Maracuya (requires a car).

The DA sits right on Playa Chinchorro, but it is by no means a beach hotel. It’s a – disappointing – business hotel that happens to be on a beach.

The DA is clearly catering to a business clientele with meetings/seminars going on all the three days we stayed there. We found the pool area to be small and rather uninviting. Also during the day the pool area has been used on every single day by the hotel as a break area for the meetings/seminars with coffee break buffets set up in the small pool area, so well dressed business people in suits mingle and sip their coffees and drinks out of china and glasses by the pool, while – in theory – people should relax at the pool. During our stay we did not use the pool once, as it was simply not inviting enough. Also, although beachfront, the rooms have no balconies.

Except for being on the beach, we fouund the location of the Hotel not good, either, as there are only very limited services in the immediate area (some restaurants, if you walk towards the city along the promenade). Other than that you need a car (or an inexpensive taxi ride for 3,000 pesos) to get to the city or the sights. Walking is not an attractive alternative as the city center is quite far and there are some desolate areas in between.

It is by no means a terrible place to stay but there are so many short comings that it isn´t a good one either.

Some of the important good features are : rooms are large, beds comfortable, bathroom was well-appointed and clean; plus staff friendly and willing to help.

Some of the short comings during our stay were : just one towel when we checked in (more towels were supplied after notifying the front desks), shower fixtures were decidedly loose and coming off the wall making the shower difficult to use, and - most importantly - the poor breakfast service. While there were always a lot of tables vacant, on both occasions we went for breakfast not a single of the vacant tables was “available”, because they were loaded with used dishes. So you either started to clear them yourself and then went hunting for clean cutlery or you went looking for a waiter to explain (in our case non-existing Spanish) that you would like to have breakfast. Breakfast served was American buffet breakfast but rather disappointing. Coffee single handedly won the title “worst breakfast coffee of our Chilean trip” and the juices were of the tasteless, sugary and watery type.

However, staff was friendly and I had the feeling they were ready to help, if specifically asked for something, but the procedures in place do not seem to work, which points towards a badly managed place. Given that this is supposed to be a 4* hotel and is priced accordingly, it is definitely not good enough to return.

i have stayed at this hotel twice, both times for a one week. The rooms are nice, and you can walk out the back door directly to the beach. Unfortunately, the beach isn't the cleanest beach in the world. In fact, there was a lot of trash all over the area around the hotel. The hotel itself was clean, the rooms were nice (pay the extra money to get the ocean side view). The restaurant served good food, and the complimentary breakfast was good (not great). The outside looked a lot more worn the second time I was there (2 years between visits). They could certainly do a little maintenance and painting to make it look nicer. The workout room was just a couple of cheap exercise machines, not very good for exercise, but there is a walking path right outside that goes along the beach. All in all, I would stay there again, but I have certainly stayed at better hotels.

Overnight stay, prior to early morning flight to Santiago. Had lunch in the restaurant on arrival. Food was excellent, very large portions and very well presented. Staff were all very helpful and friendly. Room was clean and bed was luxurious! Good range of toiletries in bathroom. Was a short walk to several beachside Restaurants and small shopping area. I left very early in the morning before breakfast, but the reception person made me coffee while I waited for my taxi to arrive.
