Neat clean rooms. Basic furnishing but i liked it very much because it reminded me of IKEA's simplicity. .
Rich buffet breakfast. Make sure you try the fresh fruits.. the goodness of the tropics are all there..
Terrible internet connection. No 3G. No WiFi. Only cable which is so-so. To connect, i had to to that from the office of my hosts.
Friendly, qualified and professional staff.
Central commercial location. Densely populated but can’t really go out after dark. Too dangerous
Make sure you book a shuttle to the airport ahead of time. Maybe it was my fault but going and coming from the airport was confusing.

Room Tip: All rooms are fine. I think all of them have a good view of the city. It kept raining for the whole...

The Hotel is currently being upgraded - by the pool deck and fitness areas are great and well appointed. Rooms are spacious with the african touch and currently being upgraded. Overall service is smooth and efficient. Breakfast needs some work with regards to selection and presentation so worth settlin for a quick coffee and croissant in the adjoining bar

Room Tip: select a room over looking pool

Akwa palace is situated in the heart of the city and is very close to the main business community. This is a 4 star hotel, but the furniture is very old. Rooms are large with balcony. However Tea/coffee kettle is not provided. While staying choose room which are garden/pool facing as that will be quieter. other option is road facing which are very noisy due to noise coming from road. it is always suggested to take higher floor room as it will be mosquito free. Pool in the hotel is very nice and big. Two blocks away from hotel is 24 hour grocery shop where you can get good fruits, breads and water.
breakfast provided is very limited and it is better to avoid it in terms of value being charged. request for a kettle at reception and you may get one for the room if you insist.

over all hotel is old but is value for money due to good room sizes, balcony and near the business.

Room Tip: Rooms facing garden/pool are quieter. higher rooms will have less chance of having mosquitoes

I stayed there for almost a year thinking it was the best Douala had to offer. When my company banned us from using it (one room cleaned out and one kidnapping/robbing of company personnel) I moved to le Meridien and what an improvement.
The Akwa Plaace management seem to want to drive you out to eat and drink every evening rather than keep you there and the restaurants opposite must be hugely grateful. The bar prices are eye-wateringly expensive and the food in the restaurant very average and the place lacking atmosphere. Hardly anyone goes to the posh restaurant called Tounebroche so there's no ambience there, although the food is pretty good. They are really missing a trick because as the streets are so dangerous they should have a captive audience in the evening, but they contrive to drive you out to eat in the evening. They are just so complacent.
Security is non- existent with hookers running round the place and no cameras or guards on the corridors. If you get robbed they make up lies to avoid taking any responsibility.
There are some very nice staff members who are really wasted there and I would love to see some of them move to the Meridien where, particularly the bar staff, are mostly useless.
I laugh when I see Marc Peters' comments because he didn't give a hoot when I stayed there he never once, in a whole year, came up to me and introduced himself.
The staff on the reception desk couldn't care less and treat any approach as a nuisance to be deflected as quickly as possible with a scowl or a click of the tongue.

My room faced the street and I enjoyed standing on the balcony and watching the disastrous downtown traffic.Sitting in that traffic, however, not at amusing. Excellent restaurants, a cafe, a fabulous bakery, seedy nightclubs, and some grocery stores are all a short walk away, and if you're unsure the hotel security will gladly escort you. The pool and deck are gorgeous, the fitness room is immaculate and the equipment is in great condition. Compared to the swanky glamour of the lobby though, the rooms are a little underwhelming. The rooms are very large, and the bathrooms are spacious, but the carpet is getting a little dingy and the bed looks like stacked mattresses on the floor. Television worked great, had to use an ethernet for internet but it worked fine, and the air conditioner was brisk. My room smelled a little moldy, hope they clean those filters soon. or pull out that carpet, it's not doing anything, really. shuttle service to and from hotel was superb. i thought the staff were pretty great, they'll help you as much as you need but won't impose themselves on you. special events means the hotel can get very crowded, at the bar and the lobby and at the poolside restaurant, but it makes for great people watching. i don't think they have designated non-smoking or smoking rooms, but if there was any old smoke, i didn't notice it.
