Everyone visiting Siem Reap will be going to Angkor Wat and you can join one of the numerous tours or research and try it yourself. We only had one day and wanted to make the most so opted for a Sunrise tour with Journey Cambodia (after doing our research and seeing the good reviews). The early start at 3:30am was tough - but we were collected from our hotel at the agreed time and joined another 8 tourists (or as Mr Bun put it - the family for today).
The early start was worth it - as it had been perfectly timed to be one of the first to the ticket office which gets surprisingly busy within 10 minutes of opening. As such, we were one of the first groups to arrive at the lake in front of the main temple. At this time it was pitch black and you need to be careful not to step into the mud along the edge of the lake. Shortly numbers had swelled to what I estimate to be 5-700 people and at this point you need to be prepared to stand your ground as some latecomers try to push their way in front of you. It all seems a bit much standing in the dark for 45 minutes getting pushed and shoved, but when dawn comes you realise why. It is outstandingly beautiful in that low dawn light.
Mr Bun then took us on the tour which was pitched perfectly at information providing in an amusing and fun way and also the best photo ops. Breakfast in the cafe nearby was good to chat with our "family" - we had a prepacked lunch from the hotel - but the food was very reasonable if you hadn't. We all learnt a great deal and had an amazing day, can thoroughly recommend this tour with Mr Bun and also the driver Mao. Thank you!
