A little disorganized in checking us in on our arrival at 1:00. When we asked if we could have our complementary lunch that day as we had tours the next 3 days, we were told the restaurant could not accommodate us. We asked if we could then have a dinner instead and they were gracious and let us have it that night. The room was decent, with firm mattresses, that we slept well in. Unfortunately we were unlucky in having someone next door who snored our last 2 nights. They may need to arrange beds differently or add another layer to the wall to make it more sound proof. The breakfast was good. It got crowded but always managed to get a seat. Staff was very nice and helpful. The spa was an added bonus. They were also very pleasant. It was a nice touch to have the complimentary shuttle to/from the airport.

Room Tip: A room in the back may be a bit more quieter than facing the street. It didn't effect us much as we only used the room to sleep at night the traffic dies down. Avoid snorers in the next room:)

Service and rooms were excellent. Breakfast was fantastic with lots of choice. We always had breakfast after 8:30am and it was always very quiet. There were several organised tour parties staying at the hotel who always left early. The swimming pool was always very quiet with lots of space.
The taxi desk at the airport is on the left after going through customs. We bought a ticket for $7 and the driver took us outside to the taxi. The taxi driver tried to sell us his tours etc all the way to the hotel. You can book the hotel's shuttle bus back to the airport at reception.
Getting around - you can get a tuk tuk just outside the hotel on the left. They charge $3 to Pub Street and $4 to the temples. We hired one for the morning to go to 2 temples, then Pub Street, then back to the hotel for $15.
Temples - When you go for the first time the tuk tuk driver stops on the way to let you get off and buy your tickets, $40 for 3 day pass. When buying your tickets you have to stand in front of a small camera at the ticket booth so your picture can be put on your ticket. It on takes a few seconds. The following days you tell your driver that you have already got tickets but he still pulls off the road so that your ticket can be punched.
We can recommend you visit Ta Prohm temple. It is not as busy as Angkor Wat and has far more atmosphere.
There are lots of ATM's around Pub Street and one just down the road from the hotel on the left.
You can get a meal for $6 with beer per person in the main town.

LOCATION - Located on the road to Angkor Wat, Tara Angkor is about a kilometre away from Pub Street. If the weather is pleasant, it's a nice walk. If not, it's a $2 tuktuk ride one-way. It's around 6km away from the airport, not a problem since they have complimentary airport transfers included in their packages. The hotel itself is located in the quiet part of Siem Reap. There are a few establishments around but mostly cater to package tour groups, who come by bus. We arrived almost midnight and the surrounding establishments are all closed and there's no nearby food stall to grab a quick bite after a long flight. The hotel restaurants were also closed at that time so we had no choice but to bite the bullet and grab a few snacks from the mini-bar. There's a supermarket of limited stocks and a water vendor a few meters down the street, heading to the Pub Street area. If you want peace and quiet or want to return quickly to your room (and dip in the pool) after a dusty and sweaty Angkor tour, this hotel is perfect. If you're the type who wants to paint Siem Reap red, you're better off with hotels located near Pub Street or the Riverfront.

ROOMS - Rooms are large and generous. Beds are on the firm side but nonetheless very comfortable. There are complimentary fruits (bananas and longans) and water, replenished everyday. Bathrooms are large with bidets, with a few minor housekeeping issues (mostly stains on the tub, bowl and sink).

DINING - The Tong Tara international breakfast buffet is commendable, with the congee and noodle stations standing out as our favourites. The croissants however isn't as flaky and light as one would hope. We had a complimentary dinner for 2 included in our package and the Asian Set Menu at the Frangipani Restaurant were delicious and generous.

SERVICE - Staff were very friendly, efficient and always had a smile. All speak good English and can easily accommodate your requests.

OTHERS - We also had a complimentary 30 min. foot massage and availed it at the spa. You can take it after doing your temple tours. We didn't try the pool since the weather was a bit cool but from the looks of it, it's a godsend if you're coming in on hotter months.

Time of Stay: 28/12/2013 to 2/01/2014
Rooms: Rating of 6/10. We had 3 rooms with 2 on the 2nd floor and 1 on the 3rd floor. All were looking a little tired but not too bad. As others have suggested the beds are on the firm side (but that doesn't bother me personally).
Location: Being just out of town suited us. Close enough for easy access but not in the thick of things.
Housekeeping: Would have to agree with other comments that this was a bit hit & miss. Seems soap & tea bags etc. were on a ration but a polite request always received prompt attention.
Dining: The breakfast buffet was a little on the average side. Pool side dining was quite okay for us although the beers were never actually cold. We only dined at the restaurant on one occasion and found the prices quite acceptable. On this occasion 5 of 5 meals were quite nice. In house beer prices could be considered a tad expensive, particularly considering the average price on the street, but that is par for course in any establishment I have been in Australia anyway.
Pool: I actually thought the pool would be bigger however it did look nice. We didn't swim as the weather was a bit cool for a dip during our visit (coolest Dec/Jan in 20 years or something).
Staff: We found all staff to be very friendly & obliging (& this was our experience with all Khmer during our travel in Cambodia).
New Years Eve buffet: Thought this warranted its own comment after reading previous comments. We were advised of the $55- per head NYE buffet deal on check in. We declined & did our own thing elsewhere and were not told it was compulsory & certainly not charged...

We stayed for a few days to see the temples and as everyone says, the location is great and many people did the same as us. Even at 5 am, there were many people up at that time to see the sun rise over Angkor Wat (well worth the effort by the way), so this seems to be the hotel's niche.

Maybe because of the transient nature of the guests, for us, the hotel missed some 'soul' somehow as there is no central area for a bar for example and if you sit outside for a nighttime drink, the service is quite absent and it is all so quiet you feel like you have to whisper to have a conversation! There is a bar area, but it is sort of makeshift, is part of the general reception area and was neither busy or enticing.

Having said that, the rooms are great (although the beds are REALLY hard!), the bathroom is lovely, the general service was good and all the staff were very helpful. There is a screen on reception which gives live flight information which I thought was useful, but the computer area / system seems a little odd. There are about 6 new iMacs available for all to use (great), but no printer so if you need anything printing (boarding passes for example), you have to email anything you want printed to reception, who then print it for you.

In our situation, reception's email wasn't working so it took us nearly an hour to get two boarding passes printed. It seemed rather at odds to have all these modern, new iMacs available for general use, and then not provide a printer.

Breakfast was a good spread with many options available and we had some bar snacks round the pool area which were all delicious. The cocktail menu was also good and wine is available on the menu.

The pool area is deserted during the day as everyone is at the temples, but fills up rapidly in the afternoon. It is not in sunshine all day either, so in the afternoon the area is in the shade.

Although we heard some complaints about the speed of the (free) wifi, we had no issues and very much appreciated the facility and we used the spa facility which was also good (although not the best we have ever had).

Overall, we enjoyed our stay but next time would probably stay in another hotel. For reference, the Meridien and Sofitel hotels are very close to the Tara Angkor.

Room Tip: The rooms overlooking the front of the hotel can be quite noisy with traffic

Dear Valued Client,

Thank you for taking the time to comment on your recent stay.

Whilst I was pleased to read that overall you did enjoy your time with us, I was deeply disappointed to learn that we were unable to meet your expectations in all areas, and I would like to apologise for any inconvenience caused. We do certainly take on board your comments regarding our hotel, and thank you for taking the time to share them.

I was also sorry to learn that you did not enjoy your meal while some absent staffs, as this is the highlight of many of our guests’ stays. However, I am grateful for your feedback and will ensure this is passed on to the relevant Managers.

Look forward to receiving another opportunity to show you our truly Tara Angkor experience.

Best Regards
