Amatao Tropical Residence
Ranked #86 of 299 Specialty Lodging in Siem Reap
Reviewed January 9, 2011

We traveled to Cambodia nearly two years ago in July 2009 for our honeymoon. We could not have asked for a better holiday after a hectic wedding. We were the only guests at the time and Naomi and the staff catered to our every whim. They also arranged for us to participate in a post-wedding Khmer ritual which blesses a newly married couple. We ate Khmer food which was customized to our taste--we have been unable to find anything as delicious since.
Amatao was a beautiful holiday. It would be a rather futile exercise to try and sum up the experience. But in a word, we would insist that it was sublime. It was truly sublime.

We stayed at Amatao for 3 nights with our 7 month old baby daughter. From the moment we arrived we were made to feel part of the family. Our daughter had a great time being entertained by the staff who all loved to take her for walks round the garden. We really appreciated being locate somewhere a bit out of the main town which can be a little busy. The hotel is located in a quiet village on the edge of town but still just a short drive into the centre or to the temple areas.

A highlight was an impromptu dance performance by Naomi and the staff for our daughter. It was such a laugh and is a great memory to leave Cambodia with.

The food was very good, the accomodation excellent. We stayed in the Ambassador suite. Overall we would highly recommend Amatao. It makes a refreshing alternative to the large number of increasingly bland international chain hotels. The individual tailored service cannot be beaten.

Upon your arrival with the unexpected condition with your lovely baby, in the end we were so happy to see her sweetest smile & laugh & excitement at your 2nd tropical home. Traveling with our 15-month old daughter, we first were a bit tense on whether this trip would play out well (flying in from Singapore, where we live). However just 5 minutes after arriving at Amatao, not only us but also our daughter had fully embraced the place as our new home with a large awesome tropical garden. Also she was pampered by the staff (we still struggle to bring her back to normality) in such way, that she soon forgot about us (we hardly have seen anywhere more child-friendly): We spent our first real quiet candlelight dinners since our daughter's birth (while the staff voluntarily entertaining the little one)!

Looking back we could not have chosen better: While the place is quite a bit out of town, this does not matter at all as all sightseeing anyway requires either Tuk-Tuk or taxi (which Amatao organized ahead for us). With truly local Cambodian village life just outside the residence gate (inviting for an sunset stroll), the place turned out to be the ideal base for exploring Angkor Wat. Furthermore, the rice paddies stretching from Amatao southwards were an exciting place to go jogging (and watching the locals doing their daily work).

Naomi (the manager) and her staff accommodated all of our special dietary needs (one of us with diabetic diet due to pregnancy; our fussy daughter ate more than at home) and came up with excellent Khmer and/or Japanese menus (despite our eating limitations) so that after a little while we stopped eating elsewhere. Last but not least probably the most memorable thing was the great hospitality & service and the way that we were treated as friends rather than guests.

We would strongly recommend this place for anybody except singles or anyone looking for nightlife & partying. If this is what one is looking for, it's probably better to chose a place smack in the centre of Siem Reap.

Thank you very much for your great review in details. We should have the persons who sincerely say "Thank you very much for giving our greatest pleasure to serve you for all meals during your stay. We had truly the great opprotunity to creat each different special menu for your family, which led us to learn a lot and made us for the ideas of our further original AMATAO menus! :)"
For your next trip as one of our valuable repeater guests and as a member of our AMATAO Family, it will be 4 or 5persons, together your lovely 2nd baby and probably 3rd baby, too? :)

We just came back from 6 nights at Amatao Residence and had a fabulous time. We stayed in the Ambassador Suite which was beautiful. Naomi and all the staff were there to help meet your every wish and make the stay exceptional.

We didn't realize when we booked that Amatao only has one guest at a time. At first we weren't sure about this concept but after a short while we really felt it was like a home away from home. Our daughters, aged 8 and 11, loved the freedom that they had at the residence and we could relax, not worrying where they were.

One of the highlights for us was cycling around the property. It is set in the middle of rice fields and the scenery is beautiful. Our tuk tuk driver, Haeng came with us to act as our tour guide and was very helpful and friendly.

We all really enjoyed this lovely spot and would recommend it to anyone who wants to visit Angkor but have bait of peace and quiet at the end of the day.
The food was amongst the best we had in Siem Reap and the cook was very accommodating with our special diets and picky eater.

I have been traveling with my four children for quite some time and this hotel was like Nirvana for us. Situated outside the city down a lovely dirt road, it is away from the noise but only 5 minutes by tuk-tuk (always on standby with a phone call from the owners) to the city centre. The owners, Naomi and Stephan treated us like we were royalty - catering to our every need. The grounds are phenomenal! Drenched in the sweet aroma of exotic flowers, Stephan will teach you the difference between each one! The pool area was well used by the kids and is beautiful. The master bedroom is out of this world - massive with powerful AC(a plus since it was hotter than the sun when we were there!) The downstairs bedrooms were a little dark but still huge. The only complaint we have is that the sitting room downstairs had no AC and it was too hot to sit in there but that was it. Breakfast was a surprise every morning with a mix of traditional and american. The dinners available are a little costly but soooo good it was a treat for a couple nights. Stephan also has an excellent wine cellar hidden away just for his guests! We also enjoyed a beautiful bath under the stars with scented oil and flowers - magnificent! There is a private spa on the grounds by request. Excellent wifi - especially for Cambodia - and they give you a cellphone to use during your stay to call locally. They really think of everything! Upon our leaving they gave the kids and I a good-bye ceremony and had us release birds into the wild to make a wish and hope for our return.

A truly spectacular experience for both me and my children. I highly recommend this villa to anyone having the joy of visiting Cambodia! We will go back!

We had the most beautiful time at Amatao. We stayed in the Suite and everything was perfect - the design on the room, the facilities, the attention to detail. Our hosts, Naomi and Stephane, with their Japanese and French influences, have created a unique style and quality with their resort. They have intertwined subtle design elements into what essentially feels like a luxurious Khmer hideaway. We were the only guests during our stay which gave us a great sense of privacy and intimacy, and whilst our hosts were always available to help us with anything we needed - from food and fine wine to transport, sight seeing and currency exchange, to sending back heavy goods to our home via TNT, to helping look after our little boy and organising massages and medical attention, we really couldn't have asked for more. They catered for any cuisine we wanted to eat, and they made every meal special. Their staff, all from the local area, have had marvellous training, so they are all very professional yet still warm, caring and fun. The pool and sun deck, spa and gardens are all beautifully designed and provide a safe sanctuary. The location is so charming as it is set in a local village where day to day life carries on around you, and you feel part of the landscape and unique culture of the region. Then a short ride away (just 15 minutes by Tuk Tuk) is Siem Reap which is a delightful, incredibly organised small city with a vitality and style all it's own. Great bars, dining and shopping at little boutiques and markets - all very clean and tidy and well-presented. Angkor, the main reason for our visit to Siem Reap, is a maximum of 30 minutes away from the resort, so visiting each day was no problem at all. Very highly recommended.
