“A wonderful small hotel near Angkor Wat”
5 of 5 bubbles Reviewed March 14, 2013

We didn't want to stay in one of the corporate box hotels that line the main street into Siem Reap, and we found a wonderful alternative in the Heritage Suites, down a funky lane through an ordinary area of Siem Reap, instead of the glitzy outer area of town. Turning past a run down monastery, we wondered where we would end up, then turned into a beautiful gardened parking area and were ushered into a real treasure! Smallish, but so beautiful inside, with a staff that immediately won our hearts. Beautiful room, terrific breakfast in a beautiful dining room/lounge with a terrific poolside area a few yards down the path. The manager Magnus, a transplanted Swede, takes terrific care of his guests, the front desk arranges tuk-tuks to where ever you decide to go, US$2, for dinner or whatever, at night ask for the guy who also works the front desk during the day, and does nighttime duty as a tuk-tuk driver, I didn't write his name down, but a caring guy, worth supporting!). We had a terrific experience here, the room was exceptional, highly recommended! [also, a terrific area for wandering around the normal scenes of Siem Reap in complete safety, the monastery is worth a photo wander; a wonderful new restaurant several hundred yards away (Marum) that is a training site for young restaurant workers; all in all, the best choice we could have made] Some other restaurant recommendations: The Nest; The Sugar Palm.

Room Tip: We had the Frangipani room (suite), which was on the first floor beyond the pool. Don't know abo...

I have stayed in Siem Reap on three seperate occasions in different Hotels and I can say this was by far the most perfect in every way. My only one small critism was my room was next to the main road which had a large number of motor bikes travelling on it and they sounded like large mosiquetos throughout the night. That said it was minor and should not put you off.

From pick up from the airport in a 1962 fintail Mercedes to check out everything was perfect. The Heritage Adventures department organised my trips, driver and guide. I was there to do some semi-professional photography and was up early (sunrise to sunset).

I normally venture out of hotels for dinner but on this occasion because the food was so tasty and well presented I ate in the Hotel on both evening. Perfect, the staff could have been more accomodating.

The charges are reasonable for a professional staying in a nice hotel. My backpacking days are long over and I look to a small piece of luxury that in my opinion this hotel and its staff delivered.

Teka and Baptise need both a special mention as they were helpful and friendly in all aspects of their job. They are both professional and accomodating.

The Hotel itself is French Colonial in its ambience and its decor both in public areas as well as my room was second to none.

If you are travelling with your partner and want a small Oasis in the dusty commotion of Siem Reap this should be your base. I cannot recommend this one highly enough, its just perfect.

Room Tip: Ask for rooms away from the road - but truly this is not a massive problem

Weren't too sure when we arrived in Siem Reap (our first time there) but all our concerns soon disappeared when we walked into the reception of this lovely hotel. Beautifully decorated, old wood beams etc, wooden furniture, a very "antique" colonial looking hotel. Right up our street!
The staff are quite simply the most friendliest we met throughout our two week holiday of the Far East. Rooms are lovely, really big, with steam room, indoor and outdoor showers, big separate bath too. Lovely comfortable beds. No TV, but really didn't need it (you can have one delivered if you want).
Can't stress enough how fantastic the staff are, so, so friendly. Hotel runs a development scheme to train and employ new staff each year - great scheme and well worth it too and you can see the benefit it is having on the staff. Food was top quality, plenty of it, and the drinks are cheap! Happy hour is the time to go :) And I am afraid to say, Raffles - Singapore, the staff here at the Heritage make the best Singapore Slings around!

We met the General Manager, Magnus, and the Manager, Baptiste, and they have a super team at the hotel. Would return to this hotel without question - hope that same staff are still there!

We decided to book this hotel based on the tripadvisor reviews and also because the hotel is part of the Relais & Chateaux chain.

To speak of the highs first:
The staff is wonderful and accommodating. The manager greeted us personally when we arrived. The service is what you expect of a Relais & Chateaux property. I had one of the best Khmer dishes in the restaurant. The special little gifts they leave each night are a lovely touch.

Unfortunately, the lows:
We booked a room rather than a suite and we were sorely disappointed. The room itself is adequate but with little attention to details - like the two holes that were left above the mirror because it was hung too high, or the badly designed wood rim that juts out around the bed that both my husband and I repeatedly knocked into. These things are minor but it was the bathroom, particularly the shower, that did us over -- An outdated space that felt small and though tidy, felt dirty. All of this is livable but not worth the almost $200 a night that we paid.

Also, this is our fault but we didn't realize that the hotel was located a little further away from the center of town. This hotel is specifically located in a neighborhood away from the tourist crowds which we appreciated but had we done it over we would have liked to have been closer to the things the city center offers.

Hotel
Even though the hotel is situated in a rather scruffy area, the hotel itself is very elegant. The bar, restaurant area are really classy and a welcome airconditioned area to eat and drink!
The hotel is situated right next to a school and although the sound of laughing children is not a bad sound compared to traffic or industrial noise - it's not for those looking for silence!

The Room
We booked a deluxe bungalow which was spacious, open plan suite. Perfect for the 5 nights we stayed. The floor is slightly worn but it is very clean.
We loved the espresso maker but trying to get pads for it was difficult! When we arrived there was no pads, or tea bags and even though the expresso maker was refilled with water everyday - no pads! - We kept having to find someone to ask for them and it was often hit or miss if we'd get them!
Do watch out for the corners of the bed - and if you take a shower make sure the door of the steam room is open otherwise you'll flood the floor!

The food
We eat at Relais & Chateaux restaurants and hotels all over Europe and they stand voor elegant, wonderful food. Unfortunately I chose this hotel because it is a Relais & Chateaux - I therefore had expectations about dinning at the hotel. The food is not the same standard as we would expect in Europe from a Relais & Chateaux. The food is ok but nothing to write home about - it's probably one of the view places I didn't take a foto of the food. We ate twice at a restaurant up the road Marum - the chef should take a look as the food and the food presentation there was far more in the direction of a Relais & Chateaux standard and at half or more of the price.
Breakfast is a la cart.

All in all - if it had not had the title of Relais & Chateaux I would have liked the hotel far more as I wouldn't have had the high expectation of the food!! - It is a lovely hotel to stay at with kind and smiling staff and top marks to the manager who is very kind and helpful.

We stayed here for 5 nights as our first visit to Siem Reap and are really glad we did. The room was well appointed and private with a free standing bath and separate lounge area. The hotel has a 'no electronics' in the room ethos but have the option for a tv and DVD player to be delivered to the room which we utilised on the last night of our stay.

The hotel offers a full service experience for everything including meals, tours, beauty treatments (through the bodia spa chain * )and souvenirs. We were keen to try other options for all of these services in town but have commented on the services we did use at the hotel. ** The bodia spa was awful and notably the worst spa experience I have ever had so have reviewed this separately in an attempt to save others from this fate**.

The meals we had at the hotel were nice and the tasting menu of an evening with matched wines was particularly good. Breakfast is simple but good portion sizes and ever friendly staff made it a pleasant start to each day.

The tours we had organised (part of our hotel package) had knowledgable guides and good itineraries. Our only comment about the tour part of our stay is to know what it is you want to do and don't be pushed into an itinerary you don't want. We found there seemed to be a set idea about what it was tourists wanted and we had to be repeated and firm in our conversation with the tour director to be able to achieve this.

Practical things: there is a laundry service at the end of the lane ($2 for a kilo of clothes) which is great value and a large 7 eleven in siem reap to purchase drinks and snacks for touring. A tuk tuk to town from the hotel was $3 each way and well worth it of an evening after dinner as he hotel is locacted out of the town centre and to far to walk into town.

The week we were in Siem Reap there were electricity blackouts each day and we met another tourist in town who had not had power at their hotel for 3 nights. The fact that we were oblivious to the power failures was a huge bonus of this hotel as was the personalised service from all of the staff including Magnus the managing director. Heritage is a true oasis in Siem Reap and recommended if you are looking for a small and personal hotel.

This was a fantastic hotel primarily because the staff could not have been better. The manager made a point to welcome us and talk to us when we were in the lobby area. The dinner staff in particular was really great. They were always smiling and working hard to give us a good experience. Our room was very nice and the food at the restaurant was excellent. We also booked our private tour of Angkor Wat through the hotel and that was the best day of our two week trip.

Two things to know - The complementary car that took us to the airport from the hotel nearly killed us from exhaust fumes. I would take a cab instead. Also, don't be alarmed when you turn onto what looks like a dark residential street. The hotel is hidden from the main road across from a school.
