I first stayed at Angkor Village Hotel almost a decade ago and in the intervening years it has lost none of its charm. Ignore the reviews that criticise the rooms and the bathrooms, this is a great slice of Cambodian hospitality served up with considerable style. I defy anyone not to gasp when they first see the setting for the amazing restaurant surrounded entirely by water (of which more later) the teak walkways and bridges over the pools, the antique-stuffed lobby, the verdant immaculately kept tropical gardens and the candlelit bar in the evening. It's in a perfect location , a short stroll away from the local market and the nightlife and a short ride away from the temples of Angkor. Service is never less than faultless and the front desk staff cannot do enough to make you feel welcome. There is an issue with the Angkor Village Hotel however - the restaurant. It's heartbreaking to see what is potentially one of the finest dining rooms in this part of Cambodia go to such waste. The setting is astonishing and with a little more work could be world-class. The food however is a shadow of what is possible. I'm under no illusion about how hard it is to do this well here, many good restaurants in Siem Reap struggle to find their way. My friend who I was travelling with (a professional chef) was on the verge of saying to the management that she wanted to take it over and fulfil its obvious promise. Everything about the restaurant needs to be changed, the service, the breakfast, the dinner menu, it has such amazing promise but it needs an expert eye over it to bring it up to the standard of what is otherwise a great hotel for Siem Reap.

We arrived to Siem Reap and our driver took us to the hotel, we had a great welcome with drinks and cold towels and then we discovered that it was the wrong hotel!!! same owners but we had our booking in another property, they were extremely nice with us saying we could stay in that hotel if we wanted but we went to our hotel where we had the same excellent welcome. The hotel is a little bit hidden and the streets are dark, I wouldn't walk but there are always tuk tuks and you can be in the downtown area in 4-10 mins. The facilities are very good, they make the room twice a day and the food is very good, including the breakfast which is included. The staff is very courteous and smiley, very helpful. We had only one problem, I asked for 2 twin beds and they gave us a 1 bed but then they added another one. Ah, rooms don't have tv, there's only 1 tv room for all rooms, but I didn't miss it!!! I definitely recommend this hotel

Room Tip: Wake up early and enjoy the breakfast buffet, mornings are beautiful in the garden!

We arrived at Siem Reap in the early evening on Sunday and easily booked a taxi from the airport to the hotel. You get a ticket at the booth just outside the airport. Inexpensive and a calm ride into the city where our hotel was situated. We arrived in around twenty minutes and had a genuinely easy introduction to the hotel, drinks and cold towels to freshen us up. Very peaceful and easy. This is not a big hotel and it did not appear to be too busy during our stay. The staff were extremely friendly throughout our five day stay. The room was very clean and comfortable and the maids did their job well each day. Free wi fi was available but it did not support data streaming so we had to go to a restaurant 5 minutes away to keep an eye on the dog in her kennels back home!! Otherwise it was OK and we kept up with general e mails etc.
Siem Reap is a good place to hire bicycles either on non guided or guided trips. We chose to go on a countryside cycle tour with Grasshopper Adventures which we booked through the hotel(Cham was our guide and he was great - he made sure we missed nothing and never hurried us - we really enjoyed the village market and the basket weaving family and just the general information that Cham was able to provide). We could just as easily booked direct as the Grasshopper shop was two minutes walk away. We had a great day out with them cycling through countryside and villages - lovely and peaceful and perfect if you want to get off the main roads.

Back to the hotel ... this is a great location and there are good restaurants a couple of minutes walk away or within ten minutes or so you can walk into the heart of the nightlife including the night market pub street etc This meant that we never ate at the hotel except for breakfast so cannot comment on the food. Breakfast was very politely served - the bacon and eggs were great and the great basket was good. The fruit was OK but nothing to get too excited about. The atmosphere was perfect though and the waitresses were lovely and very attentive. The restaurant is in the middle of a pond which formed the centrepiece of the hotel which the rooms looked over - lots of wood was in evidence and was rambling in looks with bougainvillaea spilling over balconies but this doesn't happen by accident - this hotel works hard to give the customers a good feeling of nothing out of place and everything in order whilst maintaining calm and an air of peace and tranquility. Amazing when it is so close to the bustle of the city.
If you don't feel like walking to the night market then there are always TukTuks outside the hotel - we teamed up with SengThy who was great for short trips into town but he was also good on our trip to the lake and to the Angkor Wat and other temples where he looked after us really well - loads of enthusiasm, good English and drove very safely - great to be with. He waits outside just down from the hotel and you'll find him in his hammock if he isn't busy!

All in all we had a great stay in Siem Reap and the hotel was perfect for us. It is clean, comfortable, the staff sincerely care for you and work hard to produce a hotel which provides an experience of understated comfort which we loved. I have no problem to recommend to anyone.

We can't say enough great things about our stay here at Angkor Village Hotel. Location was great, only a 5 minute walk into town with about 6 markets to choose from and pub street at your doorstep. The rooms are more like double storey villas, made off wood with traditional Khmer furnishings, but dont be mistaken, the room still provides all the modern comforts except a tv... And for good reason, there is plenty to do and see in Siem Reap! We had one on the bottom level near the pool which is just big enough to cool off and have a little swim and a sunbake. You can order food and drinks to the poolside via a phone to the lobby. Because it isn't huge their are not staff everywhere but there was always someone to help and all were extremely polite. Breakfast was lovely, enough to choose from on the menu and all freshly prepared as you wish. I could not have chosen a better place, as all of the major hotels and resorts are further out of town and you would need to rely on tuk tuks.

I travelled here with my partner in January 2012 and stayed 3 nights. We both wish it was longer. It is only a few minutes by Tuk-Tuk to the main 'Pub St' and the centre of Siem Reap and literally as you step into the hotel you feel calmed by the reception area, the greeting from the staff and general tranquility of the place. There were always so many staff to answer any questions we had or generally make sure we were comfortable.

The breakfast was amazing, huge choice, all fresh and lovely and suitable for my partner who is vegetarian. The setting looking over the pond was also very beautiful and such an amazing way to start the day. We absolutely loved this place and would thoroughly recommend it. We did go to the pool, and is great for a refreshing dip, probably not so suitable for a family who want to spend a whole day swimming - but then why would you with all the things elsewhere to visit!

Our room was also very spacious and comfortable with a seating area, huge double bed and generous bathroom. Very clean and stylish and also felt very authentic.

The hotel also offered advice on excursions and other activities, we did not embark on any of these simply as we had pre-arranged a guide for our trip, but I would have been happy to take them up as they seemed well organised and a fair price.

In terms of getting about, it literally is a 2 minute ride in a Tuk-Tuk which was a couple of dollars. There was always a few outside, we also walked a couple of times too and this was a pleasant 10 minute stroll.

We didn't dine there in the evening, but as said the breakfast was amazing, we either had plans or went into the main town. Here I can recommend the Khymer Kitchen, best Morning Glory I've ever had and all very reasonably priced!

In all, for us as a couple in our mid 30's. All totally amazing!

Room Tip: We had a room looking over the pond / breakfast area - this was fantastic and spacious. Many rooms l...

We wanted to stay somewhere a little different unlike the usual hotels found in tourist locations around the world

Angkor village sounded just like what we where looking for it was built with water all around the resort little bridges here and there lots of trees and hanging vines flowers Lilly ponds and small waterfalls at every turn it was as though the whole place floated on water it was very romantic

The rooms overlooked lush gardens the dinning room had an open view to all these things we loved it and we had only stayed in one other place like this and that was in Bali

Siem Reap town was not far and neither where the temples of Angkor,Bayon or Ta Prohm

Just make sure not to get a room at the rear of the hotel which is right on the road with a dance hall that bangs out music into the night during the day there is the noise of motor bikes going past

With so much water around you may see a rat now and then in the walk ways and foyer

Room Tip: Don't stay at the back of hotel

I can't believe this oasis exists a mere few blocks from downtown Pub Street, Siem Reap. It is peaceful and quiet with lush trees and wooden pathways with ponds surrounding the rooms. I truly looked forward to returning back here after a dusty day visiting the temples. Nice open rooms, friendly helpful staff. We hired the hotel tuk tuk driver Sopheat for the day to see Angkor Wat and had a wonderful (safe) ride. He was always available to take us to Pub Street or to a foot massage place. Pool very shaded but quiet. Breakfast average but enough to get you going for the day to the temples. A side note- Vicious Cycle is nearby and they have daily bike rentals/trips. Didn't realize this til the last day unfortunately.
