“Lovely little B&B”
Reviewed February 26, 2009

All the positive reviews about this fantastic little B&B are 100% justified. From the moment you arrive at reception they treat you like a VIP. Service was easily the best I have experienced in Cambodia and as good as any hotel I have stayed at in SE Asia. The hotel itself is very well maintained – it made a few other (more expensive) hotels we stayed at during our time in Cambodia look second rate.

Below are my list of pros and cons for this property:

Pros:
- The family studio room we booked is spacious and very nicely decorated. There is room enough for a family of 4 to stay in this room (they provide 2 double beds), however as I was only travelling with my wife and my infant son, we willingly took the opportunity to claim one bed each!
- Breakfast was excellent. You basically had a choice of anything on the breakfast menu – fantastic selection of local Cambodian food which was delicious.
- We had a semi-private dining area on the balcony in front of our room. We were able to have all meals served to us in this dining area, which made it feel like an extension of our (already spacious) room
- The pool and surrounding area is beautifully landscaped, however there are only 4 sun lounges in total, which is simply not enough
- As previously mentioned, the service at Hanumanalaya is fantastic. All staff from the receptionists to the cleaners are friendly and helpful.
- Excellent value for money considering the facilities, room size and service levels.

Cons:
- There was no kettle provided in the room – we had to go down to kitchen each time we wanted to heat up milk for my infant son.
- Location is not great – it is a bit far out from Siem Reap town, therefore a tuk tuk is required to go anywhere

This has to be the BEST place in Siem Reap, if you don't want to be in the middle of town. You're situated right across from the Sofitel ($200+ per night), and can use their gym and pool for free, but you're staying in a gorgeous B&B, with a great breakfast, a beautiful pool, and some amazing shampoo:) And it was about $60-$70 per night.

We liked being away from town, more on a local street, with hair washers, laundry places and a lady frying up bananas on the street. When we wanted to go to dinner in town, or hit the market or whatever, we just had our tuk-tuk driver take us there, or if we let him go already, we paid another guy $5 to take us there, wait for us for 1-2 hours, and then take us back.

In the mornings, we got up early to go to Angkor, and we were already half-way there, which made the ride go quicker on the way back when we were dying for a shower.

Great place. I wouldn't stay anywhere else, unless it's full, which it usually is. Not many rooms. Gift shop is WAY overpriced, but they do have some very nice items! A lot of it can be found in the market for a fraction of the cost. They also have a gorgeous showroom in a gorgeous house in PNH. Check it out!

Spent three nights at the HanumanAlaya Boutique Guesthouse and we all loved it. Very beautiful, small hotel (only 12 rooms) that almost feels like an exclusive destination resort - dark wood, stone and wood art work from the region, gorgeous pool, and plants everywhere :-) The food was very good and the staff was super nice too. Location was away from the center of town, but a short and cheap tuk-tuk ride was easy to find. Would love to stay there again and would recommend to anyone visiting Siem Reap.

(Just don't expect a luxurious or pampered experience at the spa - my sister was very disappointed with her massage given by the unpleasant spa staff. Additionally, when we were there, a terrible odor was present (either of mold or sewage).)

The Hanuman Alaya is a jewel of an inn. The staff was gracious and helpful --- we booked a tour of the monuments through their agency and had a wonderful time. The restaurant is lovely and the food delicious.

We actually stayed in Hanumanalaya House which is a couple of minutes walk around the corner from the boutique Geusthouse itself and has just 3 rooms. The House is less fancy than the main guesthouse, but still has everything you could want including air conditioning, en-suite bathroom, sky TV, good sized room, communal sitting area and (what I think were) kitchen facilities – we didn’t use them so I’m not sure? It is aimed more at the backpacker type traveller, which we were not, but we were happy to stay in basic places. The house is certainly not a 4 star hotel, so if you want all the frills I wouldn’t recommend it, however if you can’t make your mind up I would certainly encourage people to give it a go. As an aside for sheer experience and enjoyment of the Cambodian life, the short walk to the guesthouse for breakfast is fabulous and if you’re willing you’ll get to know some of the local faces between the 2 places.

The plus side to this is that you get the same breakfast at the guesthouse and can use all their facilities – the pool is a wonderful way to cool off after a sweaty day wandering the markets or temples. The breakfast incidentally is fabulous with a choice of local or ‘American’ – eggs/bacon etc. Waiter service, cooked fresh and very good quality – couldn’t fault it. Unless you’re a Brit who loves tea then you’ll get a shock – this is not tea as we know it!

The guys at the guesthouse can call you a moto (I think there are a couple of guys associated to the Hanuman that will always be about to take you into Siem Reap) it is not really walking distance , but at $2 for a ride into town it doesn’t make much difference. As a note, when we arrived into Siem Reap the moto driver in the centre was trying to encourage us to go elsewhere because Hanumanalaya was ‘very far out’ – we stuck with it and were very glad we did. It admittedly isn’t in the centre but its only a couple of minutes ride – so don’t believe the drivers in the town if they tell you otherwise. When we were heading into Siem Reap for dinner in the evening we actually asked for the driver to wait for us, which he will (as long as you can last at the bars) for only the same price as 2 one way journeys.

So many fabulous places to eat/drink/watch the world go by in Siem Reap I won’t go into detail – the Lonely Planet is pretty good for recommending good places.

One last tip – if you’re coming in from Thailand TAKE THE FLIGHT! The roads are as bad as the lonely planet suggests and the Bangkok bus scam is not exclusive to cheap buses from Bangkok – we got stung in a private transfer which was not cheap. We ended up in a big argument and finally got a taxi to take us from the boarder. Much better, although the roads are in such terrible state that it still isn’t a comfortable journey by any means. We flew out and given we had paid technically twice for the private transfer THEN the taxi when the guys tried to rip us off, the flight to Bangkok turned out to be cheaper than the journey out there.

Hanumanalaya is a wonderful guesthouse and the ‘house’ is a great bargain. I enjoyed every minute of my stay in this place and the country! Thank you HanumanAlaya!

This hotel and it’s staff justly deserve the accolades that other tourists have made. It is so friendly and relaxing. With only 13 rooms you are not a number and are soon integrated with the staff. They love to practise their English and are only too willing to tell you about Cambodian life. We dined in one night and the food was excellent. Accommodation is on 2 levels, we were upstairs where there was a Gallery nicely furnished if you wanted to sit outside of your room and relax. Although water pressure to the in bath shower is not great the supply of hot water is very good and from our experience at all times of the day. The rooms have a safe and WiFi access which cost us $10 for the 4 days. The hotel has a small pool in a lovely setting or for those wanting a larger area then the Sofitel ( about 5 minutes away perhaps later) is available to Hotel guests. Location is slightly out from the main centre but we didn’t find that a problem. No tea or coffee facilities in the room but is available from the bar area

This is a nice place to stay. The rooms were nice, spacious and reasonably equipped. The hotel staff were friendly and very helpful. The hotel grounds are very nice. There didn't appear to be an elevator to the second floor, so you may need assistance from staff with luggage. We didn't have enough time to walk around the immediate confines of the guesthouse, so I can't comment on near by food options. Siem Reap is not overly big, thus the time to the airport, Angkor complex and the centre of town is not significant.

It is easy enough to organise a taxi at the airport to the guesthouse at a cost of about $5 US. However, when organising the return trip through the hotel staff, they charged $13 US. I didn't organise any sightseeing through the hotel, so I cannot comment on this.

Always take a business card from the hotel when going out by taxi, as our driver had a little trouble finding the place.

Overall, a nice place to stay.
