“Great budget accommodation!”
Reviewed August 30, 2013 via mobile

Ivy rooms are very basic but neat and clean. We made use of the chillout area on the roof regularly (which was very relaxing when it was raining). The food here is great and they have a $1 tapas night and happy hour. Service was friendly and they can organise transport for you if you need. All in all it was a good experience and would recommend ivy to travellers on a budget.

Stayed here for 3 nights as part of month-long school expedition to Cambodia. Prices were very cheap, costing about $2-3 per double room per night. This made it ideal for people like us who were travelling around on a budget and couldn't afford to stay in luxury.

Rooms were of an adequate standard - beds were ok, relatively clean, and there were two fans in each room which were very welcome. Unfortunately for some of our party the fans fell off the wall in the middle of the night onto those sleeping below - this caused a few cuts to faces which were laughed off, but could have been more serious. There was also a lack of places to hang mosquito nets, which was an issue in a malaria-prone area.

The bathrooms were what we expected from backpacker accommodation - not luxurious, but the flushing toilet, sink and cold shower were welcome nonetheless. Remember to bring your own toilet paper or be prepared to use the hose! Unfortunately the drainage from the shower wasn't particularly effective and ventilation was poor, meaning that it smelt of stagnant water a lot.

The guesthouse had free wifi and a computer, and some very pleasant communal areas in which to relax. It had a bar which served cheap but tasty food, and cheap drinks also. The location was very good, with a laundrette just across the street and a 5 minute walk from the centre of Siem Reap. The service was good, with the staff being very helpful in helping us to book transport to Angkor Wat and in sorting out any problems we had.

Overall this was a nice guest house and very good value for money - probably the nicest of all the guesthouses we stayed in during our time there.

The guesthouse really looks good, nice restaurant and good food.

However, the room we stayed in was disappointing. The toilet did not flush properly, water was on and off (what means that taking a shower was not always possible) and we had quite some noise from the shared balcony.

Staff did not put an effort in fixing the water problem.

Hi. Thanks for staying with us & Thanks for your comments.

I'm sorry you had an issue with the water. The water table in Siem Reap is very low, so the water does have a tendancy to cut on & off. Unfortunately, there isn't much we can do as the water authority rotate it to different areas, which is why it cuts on & off. My staff should have explained this more clearly to you.

Good luck for the future

My friend and I initially planned to stay only 3 nights but extended our stay because the Ivy was so comfy and there was so much to do in Siem Reap! We had a super time. The staff at the Ivy were very attentive and helpful and the food was well priced and tasty!

Me and My Lovely Wife;) been to Cambodia in April 2013,and we have stayed in Siem Reap for one week;)
We found Ivy Guest House by mistake while walking on the side road.
First 2 nights we stayed in Naga Guest House, which was ok and then we have found Ivy,was better price and very good location,so we have decided to move in.
Overall we enjoyed our stay over there but was couple things we weren't happy about.
Rooms were ok for the price,we have paid only 8$,Right price for Backpackers;() ,they were very spacious with bathroom inside ,but they could refresh them, paint them etc...
Big minus about room was our bed, that was two single beds joined together,if you think is nothing wrong about it,but they were joined by long wooden board in the middle,so each time when were sleeping together and I tried get on my wife side;) I was wake in up,and the was really uncomfortable.
The second thing which was putting us really of,was the person who worked there on the night shifts.
I think his name was "MAP" He wasn't really friendly to us,I would even say,he was quite rude and mean sometimes.
We have chatted with few other guests and they had exactly same opinion about him as We did.
I'm pretty sure he could work on his attitude, especially that should be part of his work.
The person who worked most of the morning shifts was completely different, funny enough,as I'm aware that was brother of the guy from the night time. His name was "RU";)
He was always smiling, very friendly and very helpful,so his brother should take example of him;()
One thing which was OUTSTANDING in Ivy GH was the food!!!
Was incredible, very tasty, good portions! We were really happy with that, prices were slightly more expensive that on the street, but from other side that was a restaurant in the guest house.
One more thing which we really like it was a big Patio on the first floor, were you could watch tv,sit down on comfortable sofas, meet other backpackers, and chat with them and exchange your experiences about traveling,That was really cool;)
Overall really nice place to stay while in Siem Reap:)

B.u.J.o (;)

Dear Valued Customer

Sorry for the late response, but we have had issues with a page double up on trip advisor, and have only been getting notifications for one of the pages. So here we are...better late than never!

We're glad you enjoyed your stay with us and thanks for the kind words.Thank you also for pointing out the things you weren't happy about.

We are aware of the beds and are in the process of changing them all over at the moment. Now busy season is over we are also starting to freshen the rooms up, repaint etc....

We're sorry you had a problem with Mup. He is normally very friendly and hospitable to the guests. i had a word, and i think he was having an 'off' week.

Finally thanks for the feedback on the food. We pride ourselves in making home cooked food at reasonable prices.

Safe travels ...have a good 2013

Myself and my girlfriend arrived in Siem Reap and checked into the Ivy Guest House intending to stay a couple of weeks before heading off on our further travels. We ended up staying a month. We stayed in a fan room at the back on the top floor and found a spacious room with a nice sized en suite - a cracking room for the price. We arrived on a Friday which was great timing because they run a Tapas night every Friday. Every dish and all the drinks were $1 each! Couldn't believe it! The food was fantastic aswell, We later found that the regular menu was equally impressive and could accommodate for friends with particular tastes.

The staff working there were so friendly, they couldn't do enough for us during our stay, nothing was too much effort for them and every time we walked through the bar area we were treated to a smile. You can tell this is a family run place because the atmosphere and the general feel of the place is so friendly.

Its in a good location too, a short walk to the main bar areas & night markets but far enough away so that you don't get disturbed of a night time.

I honestly can't speak highly enough of this place. We were absolutely gutted to be leaving and will certainly hope to make it back there at some stage. Great place, great food and lovely people. Top drawer.

I stumbled across this place after checking out of a noisy, awful hostel and it was great! Ivy Guesthouse is really clean and has everything you need. The wifi is quick, reliable and works in the rooms. The food is cheap and tasty. Only 5 min walk to pub st, but in a nice quiet spot so it's quiet at night. It's so hot in Cambodia and everything in my room was so warm, so I really appreciated that there was TWO fans above the bed angled downwards, so I never overheated at night.
It was a really nice touch to have shelving and hanging space. Bargain for $7 a night.
Also, if you stay here make sure to check out Common Grounds coffee shop in the road opposite.

Official Description (provided by the hotel):
The original Ivy opened in December 1999, as the second western run business in the Old Market (by a couple of months). Owners Karl & Vannary have been catering to Siem Reap backpackers ever since and provide a warm homely atmosphere in which to enjoy your time visiting Angkor and the surrounding area. The guesthouse has 20 rooms (8 single w/fan, 8 double w/fan and 4 double a/c) all with en-suite facilities. The current Guesthouse opened in 2005 and is conveniently located along the Siem Reap river just minutes from the Old Market area and the center of town, it has since been improved with more rooms, air-conditioning and wifi-facilities. The Ivy provides a perfect budget option in the heart of Siem Reap. The simple rooms are cleaned everyday and are great for travellers trying to get a feel of Siem Reap before the rapid development of recent years. Whilst Siem Reap and Phnom Penh have rushed to develop over the past decade the majority of Cambodians are still farmers and live very simply in the countryside. The pace of life is slow and relaxed and family is the most important aspect of people's lives. The Ivy reflects this ideology and provides a fantastic atmosphere to relax and unwind after a day's exploration. Take advantage of the highspeed internet, unwind in the lounge, grab a hammock on the upstairs balcony or veg out on the sofa and watch some cable TV. The Ivy provides laundry service, bicycle rental, as well as bus and tuk-tuk reservations. Our English speaking staff are a wealth of local information and can assist you in booking trips to Angkor Wat and the surrounding area as well as inbound and onward travel. All at no extra charge. The Ivy and its owner, Van also prides herself on making some of the best food at incredible value for money. The all day breakfast is renowned and suitably large enough to sustain a long day out. The Khmer food is cheap and is prepared perfectly, this is complemented by an wide range of western favourites selected from menu created by a western chef exclusively for the Ivy back in 2001. There are also regular tapas and world food evenings and occasionally freebies of Vannary's latest new dishes. Find out why we are a firm favourite of the expat community in Siem Reap. ... more   less
