“A spiritual experience”

The caveat is, make sure you get there before the hoards of North Asian tour groups descend. I stayed overnight in Siem Reap and made my way by motorbike to the temple. Early in the morning, it is blissfully serene. Amazing sculptures (of course). The best thing to do is explore the nooks and crannies and find a quiet spot to draw or to meditate.

“Picture perfect temple”
5 of 5 bubbles Reviewed December 4, 2012

Bayon temple is not the usual Angkorian temple because of its face towers. This unique aspect makes it one of the top 3 temples you should visit when you are in Siem Reap. The other two are Angkor Wat (of course) and Ta Prohm. I visited this temple around noontime and I was pleasantly surprised that the temple wasn't filled with tourists so much so that I got many great shots of Bayon's well known face towers without much effort trying to find a spot without one or many tourists blocking the shot. And, if you want a great vantage point of Bayon, you just need to go to the other side of the moat surrounding Bayon and take a shot from there.

Many tend to forget the other parts of the temple, like the maze of hallways at the lower level of the inner gallery and the bas reliefs at its outer gallery. Since I had about an hour or so to go explore Bayon, I ventured to the lower level of the inner gallery and found the temperature there to be way lower and it was welcomed coolness from the horrible heat in the upper level. Going through this maze, don't forget to look up when you see a collapsed ceiling. You may see a face tower or two peeking. But, if you only have a little over 30 minutes to spare in Bayon, go to the upper level of the inner gallery and have your fill of the face towers and take photos with them. Regardless of the time you have, Bayon is a temple NOT TO BE MISSED.

“Great temple”
4 of 5 bubbles Reviewed December 4, 2012

A great temple among all those at Angkor. Famous for the buddha heads 'turrets'. Also central so easy to walk around to some of the other temples and buildings within Angkor Thom - always somewhere to get away from the mass tourists when they build up inside the temple.

“Make sure you see the whole place back to front”
5 of 5 bubbles Reviewed December 4, 2012

Superb site to visit and really should not be missed and do make sure you walk the whole monument from front to rear. Great water photos at close to the moat. The sculptures and engraving through out are some of the most spectacular and interesting. One of the very top places to visit in the area.

“Faces here and there”

I can imagine the caloused hands who did the craft, with love for the labor that they did. A lot of restoration going on though i think it should be done faster as a lot of stones seem to have fallen to the wrong places already. A temple worth the visit!
