Centrally located, Shinta Mani Club is one of the most tranquil and relaxing hotels in which we've stayed. Without exception, the staff was wonderful: welcoming, efficient, friendly and eager to assist in any way possible. We chose Shinta Mani in part due to their commitment to training and employing young Khmer people and were delighted with every minute of our stay. That these young people were thrilled to be offered such an opportunity was evident in their willing smiles, eagerness to do their job well and in happily stopping for a chat when time permitted.
Our room was simply, but elegantly furnished with a very comfortable bed. Set into the ceiling was a softly lit black and white sketch of an old monk - just beautiful. The bathroom was large and spotlessly clean, with fluffy white towels and quality toiletries. A sound dock included a selection of pre-programmed music if you hadn't taken your own. Large glass doors opened to a balcony that overlooked the courtyard with its contemporary pool and waterfall. Our room had windows on both sides, which created a bright, open feel. Bottled water was provided daily, along with fresh fruit and a lovely arrangement of lotus flowers. A selection of drinks in the mini-bar was included and a little basket of cookies with a sweet message was placed by our bed each evening. We were greeted with refreshing cool towels each time we arrived back at our hotel and were offered bottled water each time we left, which was very welcome.
As well as an a la carte menu, the restaurant offered a fabulous 7-course degustation of Khmer delights, which we thoroughly enjoyed, especially when accompanied by live jazz on Sunday night. Sitting on the huge swings to enjoy a drink or a meal was a highlight. The breakfast, complete with champagne, is fabulous.
We enjoyed a wonderful massage in the spa, with a choice of oils to suit our taste and mood.
Just across the road is the Shinta Mani Resort, where some afternoons we chose to soak up the sun by their clear blue pool. The architecture in the Club is sleek and contemporary, creating intimate spaces with a wonderfully nurturing feel, enhanced by music playing softly in the background. The Resort is more reminiscent of the traditional colonial era and has more open spaces with a larger, sunnier pool. Glasses of chilled water and banana chips appeared each time we sat down and were replenished at regular intervals. The hotels were both full, but you would never have realised, as the ambience remained tranquil, calm and relaxing. A percentage of sales from the shop goes to the foundation to assist in creating further jobs.
The hotel suggested possible itineraries to visit the beautiful ancient temples and the surrounding area, and organised a fantastic guide and driver. Mr Yanos was extremely knowledgable, friendly and accommodating, with outstanding English and a delightful sense of humour. The good weather in January, mid-twenties with no rain, means it is peak tourist season, but we were able to organise a schedule that mostly minimised sharing the temples with extremely large crowds. The hotel also arranged hassle-free airport transfers.
Of an evening, it was an easy walk, or a $1 tuk-tuk ride, to the vibrant night markets, where bars and restaurants share the walking streets and alley ways with market stalls.
