Wow! Just been to the most recent made in Cambodia market in Siem Reap. It was such a nice experience - in the grounds of the resort - and such a beautiful setting surrounded by tropical plants and glittering lights in the trees!
There were more stalls than last time, and every one had really gorgeous products - and a story to tell about the people that made them, and what the ethics were behind each NGO and organisation.
There was alive band playing 1960's and 1970's khmer music, the band was called At Panha (which means 'no problem'!), and the lead singer was an absolute angel!
Live demonstrations of the local martial arts - Bokator was really amazing, and I got to eatr some really delicious food from local italian restaurant 'Mammashop'.
Loads of cool jewellery made from bullets, handmade silk clothes and - ALL OF IT MADE IN CAMBODIA!
There are so many markets in siem reap that sell really bad quality products , often from china and vietnam - this does not help cambodia and its many talented craftspeople. its so important to invest holiday money in a way that supports people who are helping themselves out of poverty through hard work and real skills that they can pass on to their families.
well done Shinta mani - now its every two weeks, so i will be back for the nest one - and every two weeks after if I can!
