Wow! Just been to the most recent made in Cambodia market in Siem Reap. It was such a nice experience - in the grounds of the resort - and such a beautiful setting surrounded by tropical plants and glittering lights in the trees!

There were more stalls than last time, and every one had really gorgeous products - and a story to tell about the people that made them, and what the ethics were behind each NGO and organisation.

There was alive band playing 1960's and 1970's khmer music, the band was called At Panha (which means 'no problem'!), and the lead singer was an absolute angel!

Live demonstrations of the local martial arts - Bokator was really amazing, and I got to eatr some really delicious food from local italian restaurant 'Mammashop'.

Loads of cool jewellery made from bullets, handmade silk clothes and - ALL OF IT MADE IN CAMBODIA!

There are so many markets in siem reap that sell really bad quality products , often from china and vietnam - this does not help cambodia and its many talented craftspeople. its so important to invest holiday money in a way that supports people who are helping themselves out of poverty through hard work and real skills that they can pass on to their families.

well done Shinta mani - now its every two weeks, so i will be back for the nest one - and every two weeks after if I can!

I've been rather frustrated that so many tourists end up paying cheap, mass produced products from China, Thailand and Vietnam, thinking they are supporting the local economy. Most of the products at the markets are not in fact Cambodian made. The Made in Cambodia market (finally) provides a one stop shopping spot for tourists to meet with vendors who are working for the improvement of Cambodia's economy.

Products range from scarves and bags, to locally made rice wine and cookies, unique recycled products and some of the cutest hand knit toys I have ever seen.

Love this market and would go again if it is on when I'm back in SR.

We were lucky to be in SR when this market took place - 1st Saturday of every month. It is an initiative by Shinta Mani hotel (the market is along the road fronting the hotel) and it is really great to see a business/hotel give back to the community in this manner. The market is not big, you could walk from one end to the other in less than 10 minutes but there are on-going performances to keep you entertained, music, comfy bean bags to chill out on, food stalls to buy munchies and the hotel staff was walking around giving out free fruit popsicle (at least when we were there) to the crowd. The stalls are by various NGOs and local businesses in SR and all the goods there are made in Cambodia (thus the name). It is different from the usual markets but well worth the visit.

I have been disappointed to find a lot of made in China or Thailand products in the Cambodian markets and little else. Then I got a flyer for this market, which takes place once a month. I was lucky that it was on during my visit to SR and I would highly recommend a visit if you have the chance.

All the stalls are from local Cambodian producers, some are NGOs, other social enterprise. Either way, you know that your money is supporting the local economy.

The set up of the market is nice and they have performances by local groups. Students from the circus school were there and they put on a great performance.

Not to be missed!

If you are staying in Siem Reap you should definitely plan a trip to the made in Cambodia market. It's a real authentic market with a relaxed atmosphere in contrast with the night markets. The best thing about the made in Cambodia market is that you support NGO's and local businesses. This way you also can ask some more information about what all these NGO's are doing. Highly recommended!
