Owner description: Phare, The Cambodian Circus "Amazing vibe & energy, transforming the lives of Cambodian youth" Experience Siem Reap's most unique, authentic top rated (TripAdvisor & Lonely Planet) evening entertainment. More than just a circus, Phare, the Cambodian Circus performers use theater, music, dance and modern circus arts to tell uniquely Cambodian stories; historical, folk and modern. The young circus artists will astonish you with their energy, emotion, enthusiasm and talent. Phare artists are students and graduates from Phare Ponleu Selpak's vocational training centre in Battambang. The association was formed in 1994 by 9 young men coming home from a refugee camp after the Khmer Rouge regime. They were greatly helped during that time by an art teacher using drawing classes as therapy and wanted to share this new skill among the poor, socially deprived and troubled youngsters in Battambang. They founded an art school and public school followed to offer free education. A music school and theatre school were next and finally, for the kids who wanted more, the circus school. Today more than 1,200 pupils attend the public school daily and 500 attend the alternative schools. Phare Ponleu Selpak also has extensive outreach programs, trying to help with the problems highlighted in their own tales. Phare The Cambodian Circus offers these students and graduates somewhere to hone their skills and a place to earn a decent wage. Money that will take them out of poverty and give them self-respect and freedom.

“Circus to help the orphans”
5 of 5 bubbles Reviewed August 30, 2014

The show is spectacular. Lots of mindboggling acrobatics. All the players are Khmer orphans, trained in a special facility, outside Siem Reap. Any cent spend is helping to provide a sustainable living for poorest Cambodians. This is direct development aid! Beside that the show is really a must see attraction. The artists are performing internationally on big stages. I would rate the show among the better accrobatic shows I have seen. This after seeing some amazing shows in china.

Dear CRischi01,

Thank you for sharing your experience of Phare, the Cambodian Circus.

One point of clarification about the artists' backgrounds. They are students and graduates of Phare Ponleu Selpak NGO school in Battambang. They come from a variety of unimaginably difficult social and economic backgrounds (not just orphaned) , and transform their lives through art. They are now able to earn decent livings by doing something they love. Guests are in for a great show, knowing that they are helping transform lives.

Thanks again for writing. I'll be sure to share your comments with the artists.

Sincerely,

Craig Dodge

“ABSOLUTELY INCREDIBLE SHOW AND ORGANIZATION”
5 of 5 bubbles Reviewed August 29, 2014

If you visit Siem Reap you obviously must visit the temples. However, after the temples Phare is hands down the next best thing to do in Siem Reap. It is a truly incredible organization that not only is involved in truly meaningful humanitarian efforts, but also puts on a show whose quality is comparable to international shows such as Cirque du Soleil. Truly incredible talent on display here. MUST SEE IF YOU ARE IN TOWN. The show plays every night at 7:30 and rotates between several different plays (I have yet to see them all).

Dear John A,

Thank you for sharing your experience of Phare, the Cambodian Circus.

We are humbled and honored when compared to world-class performance companies. There may not be that same production level, but we hope that guests connect with the energy, enthusiasm, dedication, determination, passion and talent of the artists.

One programming note: Starting September 1, the show time will change to 8:00pm. The venue will still open at 6:00pm. Phare Boutique will be open for guests to browse unique souvenirs, including authentic paintings from Phare students and graduates. Phare Cafe will be open for drinks, snacks or dinner. Come early and enjoy the ambiance for the full Phare experience.

Thanks again for your comments. I'll be sure to share them with the artists.

Sincerely,

Craig Dodge

“Fantastic”

I wrote an entry on my blog just immediately when I came back to my hotel. This show is really fantastic with an interesting and traditional story, good performance and energy artist. Don't forget to watch two LCD screens on the top which show you the story.
