Owner description: Phare, The Cambodian Circus "Amazing vibe & energy, transforming the lives of Cambodian youth" Experience Siem Reap's most unique, authentic top rated (TripAdvisor & Lonely Planet) evening entertainment. More than just a circus, Phare, the Cambodian Circus performers use theater, music, dance and modern circus arts to tell uniquely Cambodian stories; historical, folk and modern. The young circus artists will astonish you with their energy, emotion, enthusiasm and talent. Phare artists are students and graduates from Phare Ponleu Selpak's vocational training centre in Battambang. The association was formed in 1994 by 9 young men coming home from a refugee camp after the Khmer Rouge regime. They were greatly helped during that time by an art teacher using drawing classes as therapy and wanted to share this new skill among the poor, socially deprived and troubled youngsters in Battambang. They founded an art school and public school followed to offer free education. A music school and theatre school were next and finally, for the kids who wanted more, the circus school. Today more than 1,200 pupils attend the public school daily and 500 attend the alternative schools. Phare Ponleu Selpak also has extensive outreach programs, trying to help with the problems highlighted in their own tales. Phare The Cambodian Circus offers these students and graduates somewhere to hone their skills and a place to earn a decent wage. Money that will take them out of poverty and give them self-respect and freedom.

Circus Phare is a fabulous showcase of circus arts and artistes. The quality is comparable to Cirque du Soliel but without the budget and enormous ticket prices. They weave a series of world class juggling, teeterboard, hand balancing, contortion and more with great story-telling. These young men and women from the streets of Cambodia have been able to turn their lives around and we are the lucky recipients of their endeavors. In between temple visits do purchase tickets and go. You will not regret it.

Dear Redwoodresident,

Thank you for sharing your experience of Phare, the Cambodian Circus.

We are always honored, humbled and surprised when reviewers compare Phare to world class companies. Phare is energetic, enthusiastic, dedicated, talented, young Cambodian performers from unimaginably difficult social and economic backgrounds. Phare is modern, daring circus arts, music, theater and dance telling stories from a uniquely Cambodian perspective. It sounds like you really connected with the artist and their story.

Thanks again for your kind words. I'll share them with the artists.

Sincerely,

Craig Dodge

I wouldn't actually describe this as a circus, it was more interpretive dance storytelling, with acrobats! Really good fun - the performers have so much energy & were obviously really enjoying themselves. Its great & supports a good cause - just go!

I'm not usually a big fan of going to the circus but this was totally different to any I've ever been to before. The performers were amazing and the story they had to tell was really interesting. The circus changes every two weeks so if you are in Siem Reap for longer than that I would definitely recommend going to both shows!
