Owner description: Phare, The Cambodian Circus "Amazing vibe & energy, transforming the lives of Cambodian youth" Experience Siem Reap's most unique, authentic top rated (TripAdvisor & Lonely Planet) evening entertainment. More than just a circus, Phare, the Cambodian Circus performers use theater, music, dance and modern circus arts to tell uniquely Cambodian stories; historical, folk and modern. The young circus artists will astonish you with their energy, emotion, enthusiasm and talent. Phare artists are students and graduates from Phare Ponleu Selpak's vocational training centre in Battambang. The association was formed in 1994 by 9 young men coming home from a refugee camp after the Khmer Rouge regime. They were greatly helped during that time by an art teacher using drawing classes as therapy and wanted to share this new skill among the poor, socially deprived and troubled youngsters in Battambang. They founded an art school and public school followed to offer free education. A music school and theatre school were next and finally, for the kids who wanted more, the circus school. Today more than 1,200 pupils attend the public school daily and 500 attend the alternative schools. Phare Ponleu Selpak also has extensive outreach programs, trying to help with the problems highlighted in their own tales. Phare The Cambodian Circus offers these students and graduates somewhere to hone their skills and a place to earn a decent wage. Money that will take them out of poverty and give them self-respect and freedom.

I decided to go to the circus in the last minute, and I was glad I did! The show is magnificent. It was the highlight of my days in Siem Riep!

“Really inspiring”
5 of 5 bubbles Reviewed September 23, 2013

I was able to watch their performance of 'Eclipse" and it is a very inspiring thing to see and experience, not only because of the message of the story itself, but also because of the story of the performers, mostly teens who were once street children and/or orphans. It may not be as big as Cirque du Soleil but if you keep in mind the background of the people around it and that it's for a good cause, then you'll be more in awe of them.

“Enthusiasm by performers is magnificent”
5 of 5 bubbles Reviewed September 22, 2013

I loved this show. Everybody who goes to Siem Reap should watch this show.
My favourite thing was the joy and the enthusiasm the performers showed. Even though they would make small mistakes every now and then, you could see that they loved what they were doing and they were excited for the applause.

The show itself was really fun too, they tell a love story and they display a athleticism and body control that is admirable. MUST-DO!
ah, and the food at the cafe is nice as well. I also bought a T-shirt afterwards, good quality.

“THE HIGHLIGHT OF OUR STAY IN SIEM REAP!”
5 of 5 bubbles Reviewed September 22, 2013

Well apart from Angkor that is.... Phare was spectacular! I had high expectations because of the rave reviews on TA and I was not disappointed! There was such an electric energy on stage for the whole performance and the stunts and acrobatics were so well executed. Yes, you can pay hundreds of $$ to see Cirque du Soleil, but nothing can beat the intimacy and energy of this performance. DO NOT MISS THIS WHEN YOU ARE IN SIEM REAP! It is a small amount of money which goes to a big cause!!

“Top entertainment for a good cause”
5 of 5 bubbles Reviewed September 21, 2013

All the performers are former street children given an education and a chance to become circus performers. The show lasts for about an hour and they are just so energetic and look to be really enjoying what they do. My favourite was the guy spinning the diablo - quite amazing.
The French guy behind it gives a bit of background about the venture at the end and you can go and mingle with the performers for a chat or have your photo taken with them. Don't go expecting Cirque du Soleil though. These are former street kids giving their all. Highly recommended.
