Owner description: Phare, The Cambodian Circus "Amazing vibe & energy, transforming the lives of Cambodian youth" Experience Siem Reap's most unique, authentic top rated (TripAdvisor & Lonely Planet) evening entertainment. More than just a circus, Phare, the Cambodian Circus performers use theater, music, dance and modern circus arts to tell uniquely Cambodian stories; historical, folk and modern. The young circus artists will astonish you with their energy, emotion, enthusiasm and talent. Phare artists are students and graduates from Phare Ponleu Selpak's vocational training centre in Battambang. The association was formed in 1994 by 9 young men coming home from a refugee camp after the Khmer Rouge regime. They were greatly helped during that time by an art teacher using drawing classes as therapy and wanted to share this new skill among the poor, socially deprived and troubled youngsters in Battambang. They founded an art school and public school followed to offer free education. A music school and theatre school were next and finally, for the kids who wanted more, the circus school. Today more than 1,200 pupils attend the public school daily and 500 attend the alternative schools. Phare Ponleu Selpak also has extensive outreach programs, trying to help with the problems highlighted in their own tales. Phare The Cambodian Circus offers these students and graduates somewhere to hone their skills and a place to earn a decent wage. Money that will take them out of poverty and give them self-respect and freedom.

The story of Cambodian youth told through this amazing circus performance is well worth your money. The young people pulled you into the story very quickly. The music was second to none. fun for all ages!

What made this performance of the Battambang students most impressive....was just that! They are local students studying within a unique local arts program. Their enthusiasm and energy is absolutely infectious and with stories told through acrobatics, dance, juggling, fire throwing--what's not to like?! Great performances! Great energy! Great cause!!

Visitors to Siem Reap can now see even more than just the temples. The famous Battambang circus now has an outpost in Siem Reap. Our school took the kids and they were mesmerized, as were the adults. A story told in juggling, acrobatics, dance, even jumping over a rope of fire. It's fun, fantastic and inspirational.

Dear Sue,

We were glad to welcoming you an the children from your organisation. As an association with very strong social missions, we are committed to introduce arts as a tool for human development to a larger Cambodian audience. We are happy to hear that the children and adults alike enjoyed the show.

We believed you saw Eclipse, a tale about discrimination. A beautiful story with great acting and circus skills especially a wonderful energy from the artists.

We look forward to welcoming you again.

From the artists and community, thank you for your support.

If you have the opportunity to see a Phare Ponleu Selpak circus show, don't miss it! I've seen the "Putho!" performance and it was just amazing! Acrobatics, music, story... everything was excellent. The artists are very talented and the show was really fun. And this is run by a cultural association that teaches circus performances, visual arts, music... to disadvantaged young Cambodians. In short : HIGHLY RECOMMENDED! :)

This is a wonderful program that has brought acrobatic local talent to the stage. The show was very entertaining for children and adults alike and we look forward to seeing the next review when it starts in a week or two. Actually planning on visiting Batabong to visit the school that trains the local villagers to become performers and see how this all came to be.
