Oops I submitted the Angkor Thom review under Bayon. The same comments hold, skip the organized tour and book a personal trip to see this fabulous complex. Take the boat ride - it was great.

One of the adventures of visiting the temples of Angkor starts when you go through one of the 5 gates of Angkor Thom. Most people will go through the south gate first and chances are that there could be a lot of people there, so if you can, try to visit the Victory Gate also.
It will help you to understand the temples inside the walls of Angkor Thom if you read up on them before you go. The best book to get is "Ancient Angkor" by Michael Freeman and Claude Jacques, and to also have a map of the area, so you don't miss anything. Don't wear your new white trainers around these place, because in the event of rain there will be mud. You can easily have something to eat/drink just outside the Elephant Terrace and there are also toilet facilities there.
Tip for getting rid of locals pestering you: Pretend you can't speak English/French, if you don't have a language in commom with them, they can't talk to you.
Don't understimate the amount of photos you will take around here, make sure you have enough memory in your camera.
Best tuk-tuk driver in Siem Reap is Mr. Rado (tuk-tuk number 5),
he is outside the Tara Angkor Hotel every morning
