“Best place in Siem Reap if you can afford it”

Sensational 5 days spent at this exceptional hotel. Rooms are excellent. Food is excellent. Service is outstanding. Spa is outstanding. Everything we wanted to do was sorted for us with minimum fuss and maximum style. Close your eyes and sign the bill life is too short.

From the moment we were met at customs and escorted through to an awaiting vintage Mercedes - our transport - we knew this was going to be something special. We spent 4 nights with our 2 sons, aged 10 and 14 and for all of us it was an amazing experience of learning, relaxing and understanding something about the Khmer heritage and Cambodia today.

The rooms were immaculate - we had a pool suite - the service completely authentic and genuine. We had a wonderful local guide - included in the tariff who took us to the temples, floating fishing village, restaurants and shared the local perspective with us. We will all long remember the wonderful feeling of breezing along in our 'remork' at 5am in the morning on our way to view the Sunrise at Ankor Wat. The staff were very accommodating in arranging meals - light breakfast delivered to room for early starts - spa open until 10pm for after dinner. It was all about the guest experience.

Amansara, is a beautiful restoration of the King's residence - Norodom Sihanouk - an interesting 1960's design faithfully restored and extended. Attention to detail was evident - for example, the flowers around the property were stunning. At my request, one of the staff members taught me how to fold the lotus flowers.

At the hotel we had the opportunity to see some of the wonderful culture of Cambodia and story telling, meet with a visiting archeologist where we could understand the economic importance of this region throughout the centuries - the life of the farmers, their families. We saw the confronting legacy of the Pol Pot regime - and I strongly recommend going to Phnom Penh when visiting Cambodia.

Yes it was expensive and humbling against the relative wealth of the local people - but I see it providing jobs and opportunities to the locals enabling their self determination. The Aman ethos of preserving the essence of the country's local culture and its people and enabling us to share an understanding of Cambodia and the heritage. That is what I say is a great travel experience.

Room Tip: pool suite was a good way to cool off

Our hotel booked us for dinner and the guard at the covert hotel entrance was expecting us. The hotel grounds are private and quiet and the dining room is a beautiful space - modern and spacious, with an exceptionally high ceiling.

There were only a few other diners there and they were all hotel guests.

The dining menu was a set menu with two options - Western or Khmer (although there appeared to be some flexibility to mix the two). There were no prices on the menu (and we didn't ask!). The wine menu included well priced house red and white by the glass, however other choices (bottles) were very pricey.

Overall, the evening was pleasant enough, but it was simply not worth it - either dollar-wise or when we compared it to two other Siem Reap dinners that we had thoroughly enjoyed; at a fraction of the price, with tastier food and better ambience.

The food was nice, but not exceptional, which is all we would have expected from a hotel charging upwards of $1,000 per night, in a country with an average annual income of half that amount.

To be honest, we actually felt a little guilty being at Amansara, knowing how the average Cambodian lives. Where is all the profit from this hotel going, given the prices in Cambodia generally, and in particular the cost of labour?

We would not recommend for all of the above reasons.

I booked at tripadvisor.
This hotel was like a hiding place and it locate a bit far from the city.

There was a big gate and it can’t see what buildings are in while the taxi closes to it.

After passing the gate, it appears an another world comparing to the city of Sirm Reap.
It was rich of beautiful nature.

The stuff in the hotel was kind and heartful.
The room was very handsome and the food was delicious.

I also went to the spa and this was very nice.
But the price of this hotel was most expensive in the Siem Reap.

It was like I was in a heaven.
I would absolutely like to come to here when I came Siem Reap again.

I have recently stayed here with a friend on holidays and am still wowed by the impressions this hotel has left behind. It is pure tranquility and a real place of peace and quite in this busy destination. I do want to mention especially the service provided by butlers, front office staff, restaurant staff and every single person working at this beautiful property, service is truly outstanding and impeccable. They arranged private tours of Angkor Wat, cooking classes, blessings with a monk, dinners, SPA treatments, lunches, visits to the market and all were highest standards. Great room, we had a suite with own pool in the back, the amenities, little presents throughout the stay and furnishings were truly appreciated. I believe that this is the hotel to stay in Siem Reap, even with a strong competitor Raffles accross the streat. My utmost respect goes out to the management and every single working person. Warmest regards!
