“Such nice people and overall nice experience”
5 of 5 bubbles Reviewed August 10, 2007

My husband and I initially booked reservations at Two Dragons and were horrified when we got there. The bathroom did not have any toilet paper (empty roll), the toilet was dirty (someone left a present), the bathroom had mildew, the towels smelled like dingy laundry and had visible holes in them, and the bed was awful. We were shocked since we read such great reviews. We packed up our stuff (quickly) and found Mom's Guesthouse down the road. The family owns and operates the guesthouse and they couldn't have been nicer or more accomodating. The rooms were spotless and the bathrooms were so nice. They have nice and clean bathtubs with hot shower and are completely remodeled. The owner cooked breakfast every morning, helped us with transporation to the temples, and took us to the airport when we had to leave. The owners are endearing and charged so much less than Two Dragons--and for SO much more! The only downside was that our door to the outside patio did not seal all the way and mosquitos liked to visit at night.

Our group of 5 went to siem reap recently and found this guesthouse online. We made a booking for 2 rooms at USD20 & 25 per room per night (1 DBL, 1 TPL).

For the price paid we don't have much complaints with regards the room cleanliness and amenities, even if the towels, bed linen and slippers provided don't look very well-cleaned.

But service attitude of the owner (i.e. the Mom, we presume) was horrible. Initially she was quite friendly but when we asked more questions she had an 180 deg change in attitude and just ignored us when we requested her to contact the tuk tuk driver for us! We had booked 2 drivers through her for the whole day but ended our trip at noon and paid off the driver for the whole day's fee (we were too tired to haggle with them to slash the price since we opted to cut short the day), but she told us we could go and see sunset at another location (different from the one from the day before that the drivers took us to) and so we asked her to help us call them back. She said she did not have his contact number and didn't want to do anything else to help us locate him. Ended up we had to find another driver and pay more for the sunset for that day.

In addition, for both mornings, our breakfast was screwed up. We informed them the night before we wanted breakfast at 5am or pack it with us, and they said "Ok". The next morning, there was nothing for us and nobody was awake. When we reminded the man who opened the door for us of our breakfast, he can give us a black face and grudgingly threw us a bag of bread and mineral water.

On the morning of our departure, we again informed them the night before we wanted breakfast at 630am to catch a flight at 8am. They said "Ok" again but again, no breakfast for us! And attempts to ask them to make us breakfast returned us dirty looks from the pple of the guesthouse. Is this what service is all about? We're sorely disappointed by what we got from Mom's guesthouse in terms of service. If they are in the business of operating a guesthouse in the hospitality industry i certainly don't feel any vague form of hospitality at all.

Dimly lit rooms. Very basic and small with old furniture.
Beds are hard and uncomfortable.
Staff ignores you most of the time and you have to take effort to aproach them.
Din from the neighbour is annoying.
Breakfast nothing to shout about.

Basic rooms with run-down beds. Linen not so clean. There were stains on the towels. Location not very convenient. Have to use tuk-tuks to commute to anywhere. Beware that Mom's tuk tuks are more expensve than those from the streets. Did not like the breakfast. Mom's charges a fee for usage of credit cards.
Certainly there are better alternative accomodations nearby.

If you think that you can come back for a good rest after a long day, think again. The neighbour , which is a restaurant, does nightly puppet show performances with loud music until late into the night.

Dear Trip Advisor Readers,

This past March, my wife and I, and two of our friends, vacationed in South East Asia. One of the highligts of the trip was our three day trip from Thailand to Cambodia. It was a huge success largely thanks to the help we’ve received from Mr. Chay and his family – the owners and operators of Mom’s Guest House in Siem Reap.

Prior to leaving for South East Asia, I had communicated with Mr. Chay over e-mail. I had asked him to customize our stay in Siem Riep and to arrange travel to Siem Reap and then to Phnom Penh. What he provided us has far exceeded our expectations.

On the first day of our Cambodian adventure, Mr. Chay arranged for his brother to pick us up from Poipet, at the Thai border, and drive us through the rough but exciting terrain of the Cambodian countryside to the city of Siem Reap. Upon arrival at the guest house, we were taken for a sunset tour of Angkor Wat and a traditional Cambodian dinner and show.

It is worth mentioning that the guest house itself was very pleasant. For just $20 a night per couple, we stayed in rooms that boasted clean interiors, spacious bathrooms, and comfortable beds. A home cooked breakfast awaited us in the morning.

The following day, we were taken by a very nice and hugely informative English speaking guide, Yous Sopanha, for a full day exploration of the Angkor Wat complex.

Our trip continued on to the Tonle Sap Lake where a boat took us around the floating village of Chong Khneas.

And last, but certainly not least, Mr. Chay arranged for bus transportation to Phnom Penh, from where we could board a plane back to Thailand. The stay at the hotel in the Cambodian capital had also been organized by Mr. Chay.

Needless to say, we were very satisfied with the services and personal attention we received from Mr. Chay, his family, and Yous Sopanha. We’ve promised that we’d put a good word out for them… so next time you’re visiting Cambodia, think of Mr. Chay as a great alternative to the many unknowns that await you in this part of the world.

Sincerely,
Les Robak

Staff are not friendly and hardly smile. Do not make you feel welcomed. Pickup from airport is free , but on board a tricycle called a tuk-tuk. Makes you feel ridiculous , being the only three-wheeled 'open' transport leaving the airport. You are expected to take up their tuk-tuk service during your stay to compensate for the free pickup. Their prices quoted are 30% higher than what you can get if you hail a tuk-tuk off the road. Location of Mom's is side-by side a string of other guest houses offering cheaper rates. Unfortunately, you'll only realise this after you have booked and checked around as most other guest houses are not listed on the internet. Rooms are basic with private baths, however, linen and towels are not really clean. Mom's is located next to a restaurant which holds nightly shows. This means you will get a din every night until the end of the performance. There is no place in Moms to hang out, not even at their lounge area as there are always family members lazing around the place. With so many other guest houses in Siem Reap, one is spoilt for choice.

Amidst the region of the secret history of the temples of Angkor, Mom's Guesthouse is one of the few best family-run guesthouses currently operational in Siem Reap, Kingdom of Cambodia. Mom’s Guesthouse opened in 1992. It initially started with 15 Khmer traditional wooden rooms. Thanks to our hospitality and excellent service, Mom’s Guest House has become very popular for both local and international tourists. Our business is progressively growing.
