This hotel was the biggest surprise of my most recent trip. Build in the French Colonial style, the Ta Phrom abounds with beautiful woodwork, wonderful Khmer style decorations, and exudes a simple elegance from the huge spiral staircase in the lobby, to the large, crystal chandelier in the upstairs bar. The staff were wonderfully friendly and helpful, and made the three day stay very fun and enjoyable, and the rooms were kept spotlessly clean. My view out the window was limited to the wall of the building next door, but otherwise the room was great, with tv, dvd player, comfortable bed, telephone, modern washroom, fridge with two complimentary bottles of water a day, and large closets with many hangers.
The location of the hotel is pretty much perfect. The Old Market is only one block away to the east, while the Night Market is literally right across the street to the south. Famous "Pub Streeet" is just an easy five minute stroll to the north, and is full of wonderful restaurants and, of course, pubs.
The only drawbacks, which I mentioned to management, was, first, that the hotel does not provide in-room safes, but uses a large safe in the lobby. This is fine for the safe-keeping of valuables, but is just a bit more of a hassle. Also, you are given a plastic card and warned not to lose it, or you will not be able to reclaim your items. The other drawback was that all the rooms containing balconies only contain twin beds, rather then double beds. I was assured by management, tho, that this was going to be changed in the coming year, when some of these rooms will be outfitted with double beds.
My only other comment ... altho I loved the use of wood throughout the hotel, perhaps it is a bit overdone in the hallways, where the wood absorbs and great deal of light and the wood panelling does not seem as pleasing to the eye.
Beyond those two small issues, my stay in the Ta Phrom was great! I could not believe that this hotel had been rated so low on tripadvisor, as it was absolutely the best hotel I stayed in during our three city tour of Cambodia. Great staff, comfortable rooms, fantastic location and a good complimentary breakfast. All this for around $30US/night!
