My friend and I stayed at Mad Monkey for five nights and we had a great time. We stayed in a room with a double bed for our first three nights and a dorm for our last two because we didn't want to leave. Thankfully the staff found room for us! The rooms were both clean and comfortable.

The rooftop bar is great for meeting people and is always fun. The staff up there make it even more enjoyable. The bar stays open until 12 and then everyone heads over to Pub Street - it's always easy to tag along.

The prices for rooms, food and drinks were all reasonable and the location was great - we could walk almost anywhere. Cambodia is our fourth country after traveling for 9 weeks and Mad Monkey was definitely one of our top stays! Thank you to the staff - you're all top notch!

Staring with the positives: The staff are well-spoken and nice. The beer at a $1 at the rooftop beach bar, which in itself is a novel idea, is pretty cool. The food is good and cheap.
The cons: The rooms are nothing worth writing home about. I stayed in one of the more expensive ones at $16 a night with air- conditioning, and just by the look of it I knew I was paying too much for it. It's tiny, the toilet, though clean, is proportionate to the tiny room and does not even come with basic toiletries such as a soap. The balcony overlooks nothing great, just some dilapidated concrete. The hostel is, as I should have expected, teeming with youngsters. They more often than not hound the rooftop bar watching movies such as Dumb and Dumber that too at an unbearably loud volume. Maybe I caught Mad Monkey at a wrong time, with the Khmer New Year approaching, but the wifi barely worked in the rooftop bar leave aside my room. I plucked my hair out trying to get on to the Internet at Mad Monkey.
Conclusion: If you're looking for a nice peaceful stay in Siem Reap, Mad Monkey is not your ideal place. $10 can get you far better, well-equipped rooms in the area. There are loads of places to stay here. The supply far outweighs the demand.

Dear Sir - We are very sorry that unlike 95% of our existing visitors that you did not enjoy your time at The Mad Monkey. Your main complaints seem to be the "Youngsters" and the lack of soap in your room. As a hostel we are a property for younger people, its stated on our website on all of our reviews pages and all of our material - I find it hard to how you could have been confused that you were staying at a hostel that featured dreaded "youngsters" and an active bar scene? Regarding the room - if you had asked for some soap we would have provided some for you - we do not provide it as standard as most guests have their own wash-bag. What you fail to state in your review is that although you may be able to getting a more upscale room in a hotel in Siem Reap for around the same price is that you will probably be there on your own, with no bar atmosphere and almost none of those pesky youngsters! Thank you for staying with us we are sorry that the bar and party atmosphere was not to your liking and we hope you enjoy your travels.

This review is waaay overdue but I've been travelling and everything and proper internet access on a decent computer has been hard to come by!

Initially booked to stay 2 nights, ended up extending to 4 (wouldve been longer except we had a flight to catch and a time limit on our trip). Coming into the trip, I had such low expectations of what the hostel would be like as i have had a less than pleasant experience in Australia (didnt think a developing country could do much better).

the location is perfect. it is right on the corner of pub street, not far by tuktuk from the bus station, even closer to angkor wat and within walking distance to the main shopping markets.

the dorms were CLEAN, the staff were EXTREMELY HELPFUL AND FRIENDLY (we checked in in the middle of the night as our bus getting in got delayed!), the beds were COMFY and we had nothing to worry about! even Ollie got out of his office to offer us help and advice. the air conditioning was always left on for us - perfect when its so hot out! - cool off when you come back.

the hostel helped us organise our angkor wat trip; epic times at the bar; even more epic times with everyone from the hostel (and not from the hostel) going out to pub street together. ANGKOR WHAT? i absolutely love the mad monkey and have made some pretty awesome friends with people we've met at the hostel.

definitely recommend this hostel to everyone! the only bad thing is, WE COULDNT STAY ANY LONGER THAN WE DID :(

Room Tip: the privates and dorms are equally good!

This is up there in one of the best hostels I have stayed in. Great for a solo traveller, you meet people in your dorm or the roof top bar. The air con is good in the room. The staff clean the rooms every day. The roof top bar is a great place to chill out during the day (if exhausted, hungover or just want to relax). they put on a movie every day at 2pm. at night the beach bar has a grenade Grand Prix, which drove me to have more than I probably should have! Bar closes about 12 then all head to Pub street for more fun! outside there are several tuk Tuks to take you to temples, wherever. Don't pay more than $1 to go to the markets, they are So Close!!

This is a great hostel. There is a rooftop bar that is fun, the staff is very nice and helpful, and it is clean. My only complaint was the a/c in the rooms. It can get a little hot, especially after a day at the temples. But other than that, I had no complaints.

Good location, good quality. The staff were great; full of advice and always ready to help us co-ordinate daytrips etc. We hired a tuk-tuk driver through them and he was friendly, professional and great value for money.

The beach bar was a great place to chill (or to party hard, which tends to happen if you do the grenade challenge). All the other tourists we met were really friendly. Short walk to pub street, too.

It felt good staying there, too, because it was ethical - although it's a Western founded business, it employs almost entirely locals, pays them progressive wages and gives them good skills. Positive vibes all round. Highly recommended.
