We did Angkor Wat by ourselves. No guide, no tuk tuk. We just hired bikes and cycled up there at 5am for sunrise. The ride itself was atmospheric: like a pilgrimage of bikes and vehicles in the pitch black. Then everyone crowded through the main entrance but we sat on the wall outside, and got some fabulous pics. Yes you are knackered, but it's a once in a lifetime experience not to be missed.

Angkor Wat is a must see when you are visiting Siem Reap.

We took a group tour for $11 per person and it is an additional $20 for a one day pass. Our bus picked us up at 5 am to get there to see the sunrise, but it was overcast so that didn't work out as planned and lead to a really long day as the temples don't open until 7:45. In between the guide took us to an over priced breakfast on site with horrible coffee. The guide was not extremely knowledgable. And because there were 10 people in our group, we spent so much time at each temple, it ended up being a 7 hour trip.

That being said, there are so many better ways to see the temple. If you want to go to see the sunrise, check the weather and make sure the sun is going to rise!

I would look into renting bikes and getting a guide book and creating your own tour. Or get a private guide and go on your own tour on your own time.

Eat breakfast before you go, don't waste your money on the overpriced food on site.

Make sure you are dressed appropriately. You must have at least a t shirt and shorts down to the knees to enter all areas. Ladies, they will try to sell you scarves to cover yourself so you can get in, but that's a scam, you need a full blown shirt, covering with a scarf won't cut it.

Beware of the horses. They got into a fight while we were there and broke off their chains and started running free! It was awesome but slightly scary!

Amazing sights to see, I just wish I had approached it differently.
