“What a Beautiful Hotel & Gardens”
Reviewed August 24, 2010

We stayed at this hotel for 3 nights in Mid June after doing a short trip in Vietnam. We absolutely loved the Siem Reap sightseeing.

I have to say this hotel was just perfect, we booked the Jnr Suite for the extra room, and the room was very well appointed and spotless. The fruit basket was just awesome. The staff were very friendly as well, and the guide they organised for the temple tours was great.

The Jnr Suite was a really good size for a suite and having a large walk in robe was handy, for all the extra clothes we had tailored in Vietnam.

Thumbs up all round, I couldn't fault it.

We were personally greeted by a very nice person with very good English, all of our reservation and check-in information was correct and ready for review, we received a cold cloth and a local drink. After signing the check-in we were shown to our room and received a brief overview of the resort.

The hotel staff were outstanding, very friendly and helpful, focused on providing great service and ensuring our comfort. The quality of their English was very good and they enjoyed participating in conversations with us.

Generally the food was good, although nothing really stood out to be special. We thought that the food value wasn’t very high and had a limited menu selection. The service in the restaurants was excellent.

The hotel condition wasn’t what we expected for the rating. It isn’t a new hotel, but it was getting very close to the point where it needed updating. The room was comfortable, large and had a nice balcony. But the view was overlooking the edge of the property and a local road. The bathroom was OK, a bit worn and in need of updating. The pool was nice, but again nothing special.

This is a good hotel, with very good service, although the hotel condition and decor were outdated. Considering the Sofitel brand, the hotel overall was nothing special and I would suggest to try a different hotel before recommending this one.

Our group was able to negotiate a super rate per night. On the last night, our flight was at 11:30 pm and we were able to negotiate half price for the use of the room up to the time to leave for the airport. The rooms were clean and comfortable; the restaurant offered excellent choices of foods at all meals, even for vegetarians; the conference rooms were spacious and well supplied; and the staff are so hospitable and courteous. I highly recommend this hotel in Siem Riep for both business and pleasure. I did not partake of the fitness center, however, my colleagues were not impressed with the center.

Most people who travel to Siem Reap are there to see Angkor Wat and the surrounding temples. This hotel property is only a few miles from those attractions but offers an oasis of cool and calm that is a much needed respite from the heat and touring. The moment we arrived we were served a lovely welcome drink and our room was immediately upgraded (some of the benefits of traveling during the low season). The grounds are gorgeous, the pool is sublime and the restaurants are terrific (especially the sumptuous breakfast buffet).

Our room was beautiful with a patio and lounge chairs for relaxing in the afternoon. The Spa offered a 2 hour massage package for only $90. We didn't have enough time so opted for a one hour treatment for $45. Amazing, relaxing, clean, professional.

The staff is so attentive and efficient without being brisk or cold. We had a private guide, Seth from Indochina Services who was sensational. His knowledge of the temple sites as well as great photo ops was just great. He added so much to our overall experience of this magical place.

I would absolutely return to this hotel...is next week too soon?

Our 3 night stay in a suite was booked via advantage plus. After much research and price comparison for similarly rated hotels I chose the Sofitel and have no regrets. We had a great package, express transfers and pick up at the airport, free internet, afternoon tea and champagne. We were met at the airport with a cold towel and drink and off to the hotel via the scenic route giving us our first look at Angor Wat on the way. Our check in and greeting was friendly and quick.
Our suite overlooked the beautiful Lagoon. The suite was huge with a separate living and bedroom, two drink/bar areas one in each room. Proper coffee maker in the living room. Two tv, one in each room and many beautiful decorative touches in both rooms. The bed was the most comfortable we had during our entire 23 day trip. The bathroom was a good size with a separate tub and shower. The closet had plenty of room for our luggage and clothing.
I let them know it was my husbands birthday and they provided a beautiful cake free of charge upon arrival.
The hotel is very close to Angor Wat and we did two sunrise sessions with a guide I choose from other TA members recommendations named Pheng. He was fantastic and if you would like more info regarding him, please send me a PM.
The pool area was large and had plenty of lounge chairs, it was low season so I can't comment on how it would be during high season. We found the pool attendant very friendly and had great service.
The spa, while yes more expensive than the ones you can find in town was still good value for money if you compare it to similar services at home. Our treatment was professional and very good.
I know some feel this hotel is expensive for what you can get elsewhere so cheaply in Siem Reap but IMO it is good value for money for what you get if you compare to places you would pay much more for much less in NZ.
We found the lobby inviting, beautifully lighted with candles at night. A lovely lady playing music one evening. A fellow on piano during afternoon tea in the bar. During our stay from the 13 to 16th, two restaurants were open. But Mahots was not very busy.
A tuk tuk ride from the Sofitel to town was max 15 minutes and really more like 10 to 12 and cost 10 for the driver to wait for you and bring you back at your specified time.
We really enjoyed staying at the Sofitel and I would highly recommend it. We stayed at some fantastic resorts during this trip to Cambodia and Thailand and the Sofitel was one of our highlights.
