We just got back from 2 nights here for the Angkor Wat 10k/Half-Marathon. As at every 5-star hotel I've been to in Cambodia, service here is excellent: friendly, warm and attentive. From check-in, to the bartenders and restaurant staff, to the delightful pre-race note & chocolate snack I received unexpectedly, it was all great. We also loved the fun little gifts that were left on our beds each night at turndown (Cambodian spices, beautiful krama scarves, and the aforementioned baked goods). The immaculate grounds are also beautiful to stroll with the bridges, lagoon and torches lit by fire at night. I did have some issues though:
1) Two days in a row it was a hassle to find a lounge chair by the pool because they were all full or reserved with towels, particularly in the shade. On the first day a helpful attendant was able to find extra cushions to put on chairs in the shade, but on the second day there was no one around. Both days the area was filled with noisy kids running around and screaming, ruling out any hopes of a nap or quiet reading. My husband and I tried to go to the swim-up bar, but kept getting splashed by kids jumping off the bar stools. We were also put off when a little girl loudly announce "I just peed in the pool!" I totally get that this is a family resort and have no...We just got back from 2 nights here for the Angkor Wat 10k/Half-Marathon. My husband and I tried to go to the swim-up bar, but kept getting splashed by kids jumping off the bar stools. We were also put off when a little girl loudly announce "I just peed in the pool!" I totally get that this is a family resort and have no problem with kids, but it would be great if there was a separate kids pool, or at the very least if the kids weren't all splashing around the bar area.
2) Our room was meant to be non-smoking but reeked of cigarette smoke/air fresheners. Along these lines, we also found the lobby smelled overpoweringly of men's cologne.
3) We had a lovely little patio overlooking the lagoon (I tried to go read there when I couldn't find a lounger at the pool), but the furniture was chipped and kind of dirty. Also not very comfortable.
I've also stayed at the Le Meridien down the road and would say that hotel's atmosphere, restaurants and pool facilities were a bit better, although the Sofitel's rooms were brighter and more modern (and I loved all the L'Occitane en Provence bath amenities).More
