After having a very positive experience the last time I was in Siem Reap (January 2018), my travel companion and I decided to sign up for another Grasshopper adventure, this time doing the Secret Angkor Conservation Cycling and Tree Planting tour.

The Grasshopper team makes the entire experience seamless from the very beginning. We went to the Grasshopper shop and got fitted for our bikes and helmets (you provide your height ahead of time so they know what size bike to start with, but they still have you test it). The bikes are in great shape and very comfortable to ride. From there, our guide walked us through what was going to happen for the day and then we jumped in the van to the Angkor Wat complex.

NOTE: For this tour you have to purchase a ticket to Angkor Wat, which is an additional $37p/p on top of the tour price. This is called out in the details of the tour online, but is easy to miss.

Having already seen Angkor Wat in 2017, what was appealing about this tour is that it took us away from the hoards of tourists and into parts of the complex that are seldom seen. We saw lesser known, but equally beautiful, temples throughout the tour and, most times, were the only people there. Our two guides were extremely knowledgeable and also made sure we were well taken care of throughout our journey. In addition to seeing the temples, we were treated to a homemade lunch along the reservoir, rode through a local village and completed the experience with a tree planting near one of the Buddhist temples were monks actively practice.

The ride intensity was not very strenuous, in terms of terrain, but you are riding for several hours total (with stops in between of course) so make sure you start out hydrated and continue to hydrate throughout the ride.

For those who want a full day bike excursion in Siem Reap, this is a great choice!

This was a fantastic day trip which I will definitely recommend to anyone I know coming to Siem Reap. We were lucky to have a small group (4) with similar biking abilities and Bo, our guide was excellent. He knew all the great spots for photos, had a wealth of knowledge and moved us along without rushing us. We really appreciated his genuine concern for the temples as well - he picked up litter as we went and made sure that no-one was climbing on or over restricted areas (as unfortunately some tourists seemed hell bent on doing) It was a relief to have the refillable water bottles supplied by Grasshopper instead of yet another throwaway plastic bottle which are everywhere in Siem Reap. The food during the day was delicious and the cold towels and coconut water upon return to the Grasshopper base were SOOOO good! We were worried about being hot during the day - and we certainly were - but biking through the jungle helped a lot to keep the temperature down. My only word of caution for this tour is that I think a reasonable level of fitness would be required - I am in my late 50's and was confident I would handle the 30kms or so of biking - what I forgot to factor in was the hours you spent walking around the temples as well as the biking!! So, it was perfectly achievable with a reasonable level of fitness...but I was pretty shattered at the end of the day :)

Top-Guide Dara "Vichea" Seng!! Good bikes. Good food. Small group. Good organization. During bike times away from the crowds! And - although it's difficult - the guide found some special spots where we were quite alone. Worth the money!

We were picked up promptly for our sunrise tour of the temples. Our guide Chen and cook Ta were knowledgable and well prepared for our day. Chen did a great job managing the crowds while providing us with his excellent humor along the way. And Ta cooked up a delicious breakfast and refreshing snacks.Biking through the jungle was an unforgettable experience. My friends and I highly recommend Grasshopper Adventures!

This bike tour was awesome! We had the opportunity to visit three unknown temples near Angkor Wat. The highlight was being able to explore these temples without any crowds. The bike ride mainly took place through the jungle, which was exhilarating and fun. Our leaders ensured that our safety was #1. The bikes were modern and super dependable. We had lunch in a serene place all by ourselves. We ended the day by planting a tree outside a historical Buddhist temple complex as part of a reforestation project.
