“Worse than ever can imagine!”
1 of 5 bubbles Reviewed April 12, 2014

It was a gloomy and tensioned atmosphere like a soilders' camp. The waitresses were very unkind and they looked all the same like robots. Did they get plastic surgery at a same clinic?
Evenworse... couldn't imagine we had to pay for that exorbitant food and service.
I had similar experience at another Pyeongyang restaurant in Jakarta, maybe those chains are all bizzare.

“Worst Food ever Taste”
1 of 5 bubbles Reviewed February 7, 2014 via mobile

I always thought Korean foods are good and healthy.
This restaurant really disappointing as the foods were terrible. We ordered a table full of dishes however I feel so hungry after the meal as that's nothing that I'm manage to put into my mouth.
The fish was like dried for centuries and cook with soup without taste yet very hard (I did not touch the fish after first taste).
The entertainments with instruments and terrible singing were boring.
If you would like to spend money unreasonably, this is a place you can go as you pay with very high price for super lousy foods.

“Worst korean food ever”
1 of 5 bubbles Reviewed September 27, 2013

Bizarre doesn't begin to describe this place. But one can deal with bizarre. One can't deal with the worst food ever. Rice cakes in rice cake dumpling soup that are hard (not soft)?! Inedible beef? Unless you're on a Korean tour group, stay away! Should have checked with TripAdvisor before going.

“If you want a really strange experience, this is it.”
3 of 5 bubbles Reviewed January 27, 2013

The Pyong Yang Restaurant , which is run by the North Korean government, is one of the strangest places I have been to in a long time. The place is cavernous and seats 400 people and we were told that there was only one seating at 6 pm and a show from 6 to 7. The place was full of South Koreans. They all arrived by buses and had a set meal which was already on the table.
They loved the show, which consisted of the waitresses doing strange and very old fashioned sketches ( such as tap dancing ) , singing and playing instruments. The poor girls were running around changing costumes as well as serving. Our presence upset them a great deal as we did not have the set meal and they would have to sneak our food to our table without their costumes being seen. The food was mediocre and expensive. The most interesting dish were deep fried sesame leaves.
As soon as the show was over everyone got up and left. The waitresses managed to clear all the tables and set them again with the food and another show started at 7.30.

“North Korean deception”
2 of 5 bubbles Reviewed September 28, 2012

We visited the PyongYang restaurant with the idea of getting some new taste experiences given that North Korea is not really a place easily visited. We walked away with a very disappointed feeling and a huge bill.

The inside of the restaurant - at lunch - was empty and looks like a large dining hall for a 500+ seat wedding rather than a restaurant. So we were shuffled in some side cubicles i.e. a table in between some wooden screens. I saw some pictures here of waitresses in traditional dress, they were no where in sight at lunch either.

We had a South Korean in our party so I guess it is fair to say that the taste bud judgement can be labelled as accurate. Me myself I am also a experienced Korean foodie but not native.

The cold noodles, deemed to be a specialty of North Korea were tasteless.
On the other hand the dumplings and kimchi were excellent (note that kimchi needs to be purchased, doesn't come as normal addition like in other Korean restaurants).

We had fried seasoned pork. Somewhat ok, but not fried at the table, wich means it gets cold pretty quickly (including the fat) and the side disches such as garlic and onion cannot be fried or warmed up either. So basically chewing raw onion.

Then came the big surprise / disappointment. We ordered a mixed sachimi of ... 30 USD !!! Yes, you read correctly. 30 USD is basically the price of a complete meal in other restaurants in Siem Reap. So the expectation level was at least to have a decent sachimi. But low and behold, what came out was slices of completely frozen fish, still frozen on the plate.
Tasteless and horrible texture to start with (who likes to eat ice?) and when they started to thaw, the water started dripping out to make the experience even more unpleasant if at all possible.
We complained to the waitress that this was not even near an acceptable sachimi and asked to return.
Which was refused, "Siem Reap is far from the sea so this is what you get" was the answer.
Although, obviously, Siem Reap has enough water around, Tonle Sap lake and all to provide for some decent fresh fish.

In the end, we had to pay 80 USD for the lunch, which is an outrageous amount for Siem Reap. That price level would need to guarantee the visitor some fine dining at least.

Alas, North Korea thinks differently. I hope the regime enjoys our dollars.

A dining place to be avoided is the only possible conclusion.
