“worth the distance”
5 of 5 bubbles Reviewed January 21, 2012

Even if it's not so close to the city center, this hotel is so nice and quiet that it worths the distance. Nice, wooden hotel with large and clean rooms. Staff in friendly and helpful, taxi prices are the best..and wifi internet is for free!!

Our family of 2 adults and 2 children (9 and 7 years) stayed for 5 nights in December 2011. Hotel staff were lovely and helpful with tuk-tuk organisation (we had the same guy-Red each day which was nice) and breakfast was a wide selection and appealed to all in our family. The only negatives were the hot water ran out quickly and our room was smallish compared to others during our stay in Cambodia- however I still would highly recommend the hotel.

We got a spacious room with double bed, single bed and traditional Cambodian decor, free tuk tuk transfers to/from the airport (even though we departed at 6.20am on 1st January and they had to wake the driver!), breakfasts of combinations of pancakes, ham, eggs and chips, one free tuk tuk ride into the centre of Siem Reap every day, use of swimming pool and tour booking service for around GBP 13 per person per night. Bargain! This new boutique hotel is midway between the town and Angkor Wat so whilst not really walkable in the heat to all the restaurants and bars it only cost US$ 2 per ride. The drivers start off negotiating at 5 dollars but we never paid more than 2. Pick up a business card from the hotel reception though as one driver took us to the wrong hotel by mistake! We didn't actually use the tour booking service at the hotel as they could be a little pushy - asking as soon as we arrived and then nearly every morning what our plans were and where we wanted to go. Instead we found a tuk tuk driver who spoke good enough English and arranged for him to pick us up at the hotel at a set time the following day.

We stayed here for two weeks so we got to experience it fully at various times of the day. The hotel is outside of town which makes it fairly quiet but close enough to Lucky Supermarket, Pub Street, Night Market and Angkor temples. They offer free tuk-tuk rides to town, etc. You can also book all of your tours through the hotel, which we did, including Vietnam visas and transfer to Phnom Penh. I highly recommend this hotel.

The wood furniture in the lobby and the plants near the swimming pool give this hotel a distinctive character. The bedrooms are spacious, clean and modern. There are several choices for the free breakfast and all of the choices at the restaurant are very delicious.

I don’t understand why others were complaining about Internet access on the top floor. We were there at around the same time and we stayed at the hotel for an entire day during our rest days. Our kids used the Internet for their schoolwork and I used for it work and it was fine. We experienced slow connections at times but I’d like to blame that on the Internet provider or the country's infrastructure instead of what they have at the hotel. They have two routers on each floor and signal is always strong.

Room Tip: The trick is to order your meals ahead of time so that it will be ready when you sit at the restaura...

The staff at this hotel is really friendly. The pool and the little balcony above it is great, when me and my mom was there we got it all to our selves (for some strange reason). The problems would be that we didn't get the right order for our breakfast even once (we stayed there 3 nights) and that they didnt come to pick us up at the airport even though we emailed them about it. They said that I must have writted the wrong emailadress but I picked three emailadresses directly from their website so that probably wasn't it. If you have a question you should take it up with the reception and not anyone working for the hotel, because we noticed that the employees wasn't fully informed (about wifi and stuff). Despite that, it was great and we loved every minute.

The Shining Angkor was a great hotel to stay in, with great staff, location was close to the temples, and the hotel decor was very Khmer (they use a lot of teak wood!). Downsides was that the bedroom on the ground floor had window covering on the glass which did not allow any natural light in, so the room was dark. Breakfast was included, and pretty tasty. Didn't use the pool, but it was pretty relaxing to chill out there. Wifi didn't work on any of the floors really though.

Room Tip: Don't stay on the ground floor.
