Certificate of Excellence

Our family of four (children aged 21 and 19 ) enjoyed an excellent stay at the Cockatoo. We travelled to Siem Reap overland from Bangkok, and from our first email correspondence with Peter and Virgil, we knew we had found a place where we would feel welcome and comfortable. They gave us great assistance in planning our visits and making the most of our time at Ankor Watt, they are extremely knowledgable and sensible and meticulous in their attention to every detail. The Cockatoo is a lovely garden haven very restful to return to after a day of touring and it is wonderful to be able to jump into the pool at anytime.. It is a fifteen minute walk or short ride via their tuk-tuk into town if you seek nightlife or varied dining. The bed rooms are not large but there are other common areas which are comfortable and welcoming . Their charges are very reasonable and clear. Suggest if you are serious about booking that you contact them directly via email rather than book through any agency. Cambodia is not an easy place to visit, but if you stay here many of your problems will be anticipated and solved in advance by your hosts. It was difficult for us to leave the Cockatoo, we came as strangers but felt we left as friends. While they take care of their guests they also give you your independence and privacy if that is what you prefer.

Room Tip: limited number and type of rooms, be specific about your requirements and trust the hosts to make th...

Five of us stayed for 5 days at The Cockatoo in August of 2011. It's a physically lovely and comfortable small hotel set apart in a residential neighborhood. Peter & Virgil were amazingly attentive before, during, and after our trip. They helped advise, guide, and arrange things for us. They provided pleasant conversation. I can't imagine having enjoyed the country half as much if we had stayed anywhere else. And I must say: the food that Virgil cooked for dinner was the best we had in our 2 months in Asia. I have recommended this hotel to friends. I can't recommend it highly enough.

We stayed here during a family trip to Siem Reap in August of 2011. The care that Peter and Virgil took of us (both adults and children) was simply stellar. They made touring the temples easy, had wonderful recommendations for exploring the town and surroundings, and made returning home at the end of each day a true pleasure. The dinner that Virgil prepared for us our first night was a delight, from beginning to end -- the best meal we had in 2 months in Asia. Terrifically creative and tasty. I would gladly eat his food non-stop for a week or more! Plus, Peter and Virgil are genuinely interesting and friendly people. We couldn't recommend the Cockatoo more highly.

So many of the earlier reviews have complimented Peter and Virgil on their outstanding level of hospitality and customer service and I fully agree. This lovely little hideaway has lush grounds with a nice pool and lots of comfy seating areas dotted around.
Peter and Virgil are an entertaining pair of characters, and I really enjoyed getting to know them and we parted as friends not just as hotelier/guest. Virgil made me a lovely dinner when I was too tired to head back into town and they also gave me great restaurant recommendations for other nights. I really valued their excellent local knowledge and ability to help me plan the perfect 5 days in the area. I didn't want to figure it all out for myself after traveling in Vietnam for 2 weeks. I would recommend relying on them to steer you in the right direction and make all the arrangements for you. Their tuk tuk driver is a really nice guy, as was the guide they connected me with. The staff and owners helped make my time in Cambodia relaxing and enjoyable.

Peter and Virgil certainly have the knack of making guests very welcome. And try not to miss one of Virgil's evening meals if he is in the kitchen - his cooking is second to none. The 'house' tuk-tuk will take you around town, and back, for a nominal fee. But you can soon learn to walk the 15 minutes into town - two lefts, a right and you are in sight of the downtown area. The Cockatoo is in a quiet backwater district with luscious foliage, a private swimming pool and no nuisances. Don't expect too many extras such as WifFi or breakfast in bed. The Cockatoo is not competing with a five star hotel. You choose the Cockatoo to be a "family" member, even if temporarily. A memorable experience.

Room Tip: All the rooms are similar, but some face the swimming pool and have a slight edge.

We would like to express our deepest thanks to the writer for his very generous review of his stay (actually his second within just over a month) at The Cockatoo, particularly for his glowing comment about the food. There is, however, one small correction we would like to make - free Wi-Fi is available in all the rooms and throughout the resort, and breakfast or any other meal may be served in the room upon the guest's request, though most people, the writer himself included, prefer to dine in our restaurant overlooking the pool and gardens. .

We had a great stay here from the time we arrived to 4 days later. Peter and his staff could not do enough for us. Rooms were lovely and comfortable, pool and surrounds were so nice, ambience was spot on, also the breakfast was good as well. If you are going to do Anchor Wat this is the place to stay as Peter has the answer to all your requests., Lorraine and Ray Fox

Room Tip: all rooms are good
