“Fantastic for budget travellers”
Reviewed June 28, 2010

For $15 a night we weren’t expecting much from Thunborey hotel. However, we were pleasantly surprised on arrival. We had taken a bus from Phnom Penh to Siem Reap and a tuk tuk from the bus station to the hotel cost us only $2. The staff at the reception were friendly and immediately showed us to our rooms. We had booked 2 twin rooms which were conveniently located, just opposite each other. The rooms were spacious and bright with all the amenities that one could expect in a larger and more expensive hotel- large and newly renovated bathroom, comfortable beds, TV, wardrobes, mini bar, complementary bottled water etc. It takes a long time for the shower water to warm up.

When we asked to have breakfast packed for the next day (we were heading to Angkor for sunrise at 5:00 am) the man at the reception was helpful and understood that we required the meal to be vegetarian. Yummy club sandwiches with cheese and egg were waiting for us at the reception at 5:00 the next morning. Service was prompt and friendly, though hindered by poor English.

The hotel is well located, just a 3-5 min walk from the old market and pub street. The street is a little shanty. Tuks tuks should be happy to take you to and from the old market for just $1, though it is sometimes hard to find a tuk tuk at the front of the hotel.

Breakfast is served daily (included in the price of the room) daily from 6-10 on the terrace on level 5. While the view is nothing special, it’s nice to be eating in the open. The breakfast menu is reasonable, and coffee is served in a pot, accompanied by condensed milk- enough for 2 people. Free wifi is available, and there are 2 computers with internet in the lobby, though the hotel kept having problems with the connection while I was there, and the internet was very very slow. A 3 hour laundry service is provided for $1.50 per kg of clothes- cheap!

While the hotel is nothing spectacular, it is a luxurious stop for budget travellers. Will be back here on my next visit.

Our room rate is never 15$ per room per night. You stayed in twin room so it cost only 12$ included daily breakfast.

cant fault the place. big clean rooms with very helpful staff. breakfast nothing special but at $12 per room per night how can you go wrong. just a couple of minutes to the main town but far enough out to be rather quite. a good break from places costing twice as much for half the perks.

Very good hotel for the price. I paid 12 USD for a double room.

I booked 2 double rooms, and got rooms opposite each other. Bookings were easy over the phone. Staff spoke reasonable English and sent confirmations by email.

The location is very good. 5 minutes walk from the city centre (Old market/night market/pub street). Siem Reap is basically a village, so don't expect great surroundings. But once inside the hotel, it was quite nice.

Large rooms, clean beds and bathrooms. Hot water a bit scarce early in the morning (I was waking at 4:30 to go see the sunrise). I think they have solar heating, but a cold/luke-warm shower is a great way to prep for the extreme heat of the day!

CRT TVC with plenty of western channels. Safe and cupboard provided. Shampoo, soap, shower gel, tootpaste and toothbrush too provided! No free drinking water however.

Breakfast was good (club sandwiches) though a bit small and I'm not the biggest eater. On the plus side, the hotel was able to provide this as a packed breakfast at 5am.

Good service and very friendly staff. I asked for a needle and thread to repair a button and got what I asked for within 5 minutes.

Paid (but cheap) laundry service.

Massage service available in your hotel room. 5 USD for a full body massage (1 hour) and 9 USD for an oil massage.

Most importantly, the rooms were clean and felt safe. What more do you want!?

RECOMMENDED!

Our first hotel on our trip and probably our best. Fantastic family room, which was huge, modern bathroom, cable TV, wi-fi, just excellent. Hotel picked us up from the Airport, which made the start of our trip very easy. Travelling down the bumpy road to the hotel you wonder where you are heading but don't be put off the hotel is excellent and a great price. Breakfast on the roof top open air restaurant was a great way to start the day. Easy to head into the main part of town, we walked everyday with our small children, or you could take a tuk-tuk. Hotel organised our tuk-tuk driver for our two days visiting the temples, he was a gem. You might be able to get it a little cheaper by asking around but for the extra $1 would you take the risk.

Look no further! This property is amazing!! And so cheap! We stayed at Thonborey for 4 nigths in April, and we loved it! The rooms were very spacious and very clean and tidy. Air con worked perfectly, big bathrooms with good hot water pressure (westerner showers)and cable tv. The staff is really friendly and they helped us with everything we needed. The location is also great, walking distance to the town centre. And the best part was the price, only US$12!!! We were amazed by the quality of this hotel, it was by far the best property we stayed in South East Asia, and we would reccomend it to everyone!

I can't recommend this hotel highly enough! We found them absolutely randomly through their website www.thunboreyhotel.com. And I have to say, they're exactly what they claim to be - the rooms are clean and spacious with lovely red wood furniture in a colonial styleas their pics show, air conditionning works very well, great shower, TV with 70-80 channels, a mini-fridge, perfect room service, the staff is lovely and speaks great english, especially Sam Nang, a smily and very polite reception clerk. They have a restaurant on the 5th floor, where you can have your breakfast (which is included in the price of your room). Please, say hi to Richard, who mans the restaurant - great guy! ;) The location is very central, few mins walk to all the restaurants and shops. We just walked in without prebooking, but it was in a low season so I would recommend to drop an e-mail to these guys first. Anyway, when we walked in and said that we wanted a room for three nights Sam Nang smiled at us and said "Are you kidding?" he was so surprised that we found them.. We also really liked the managing director who is a young Cambodian Mr.Tor Seiha. When we missed a bus pick up on our last morning, he run to get his car, and drove us all the way to the station (what a service!). I also forgot to mention that the hotel has wireless internet in the lobby and ethernet cable in the room, so if you brought your laptop with you you can use it for free! The last thing is that the hotel can recommend you a great english speaking tuk-tuk driver mr.Leng, who we used for 2 days to go to Angkor Wat. His rate is $9 for the whole day ($14 if it's a long distance or early morning 4am start to meet sunrise in Angkor Wat). Lots of tours, buying the tickets for you - you name it.. We got the room on the promotion that they have at the moment $12 per room, usually it's $25. But with free breakfast for 2 of us which in Siem Reap usually cost from $3-6 it was an absolute bargain. You guys rocked! xxx
