For $15 a night we weren’t expecting much from Thunborey hotel. However, we were pleasantly surprised on arrival. We had taken a bus from Phnom Penh to Siem Reap and a tuk tuk from the bus station to the hotel cost us only $2. The staff at the reception were friendly and immediately showed us to our rooms. We had booked 2 twin rooms which were conveniently located, just opposite each other. The rooms were spacious and bright with all the amenities that one could expect in a larger and more expensive hotel- large and newly renovated bathroom, comfortable beds, TV, wardrobes, mini bar, complementary bottled water etc. It takes a long time for the shower water to warm up.
When we asked to have breakfast packed for the next day (we were heading to Angkor for sunrise at 5:00 am) the man at the reception was helpful and understood that we required the meal to be vegetarian. Yummy club sandwiches with cheese and egg were waiting for us at the reception at 5:00 the next morning. Service was prompt and friendly, though hindered by poor English.
The hotel is well located, just a 3-5 min walk from the old market and pub street. The street is a little shanty. Tuks tuks should be happy to take you to and from the old market for just $1, though it is sometimes hard to find a tuk tuk at the front of the hotel.
Breakfast is served daily (included in the price of the room) daily from 6-10 on the terrace on level 5. While the view is nothing special, it’s nice to be eating in the open. The breakfast menu is reasonable, and coffee is served in a pot, accompanied by condensed milk- enough for 2 people. Free wifi is available, and there are 2 computers with internet in the lobby, though the hotel kept having problems with the connection while I was there, and the internet was very very slow. A 3 hour laundry service is provided for $1.50 per kg of clothes- cheap!
While the hotel is nothing spectacular, it is a luxurious stop for budget travellers. Will be back here on my next visit.
