“Lovely oasis”
5 of 5 bubbles Reviewed November 28, 2011

In the hot & dusty Siem Reap, Sonalong is quiet little oasis. Mr Hak & all his lovely staff are attentive but not intrusive. The pool & grounds are well maintained, rooms are spartan but clean and breakfasts are good. We used tuk tuk drivers Nga & Dorn who Mr Hak called to escort our family of 5 around the temples for the day. They seem to spend a lot of time at the gates of the hotel so were also available when we needed a ride to town.
Yes we could have walked the 10 minutes into Pub Street but $2 for a tuk tuk that seated all 5 of us was much easier in the heat.
Only negative I can think of is that the portable bed provided in our 2nd room for my 3rd child was uncomfortable. The rooms are better suited in size just for a double bed or 2 twins - my fault for travelling with 3 kids I guess!
My room tip would be to ask for upstairs as we seemed to have an elephant staying above us during our visit who thundered around day & night pacing the floor.

Room Tip: Insist on an upstairs room to avoid overhead noise from others.

This hotel was our second choice as one recommended by friends was not available--but will absolutely be our first choice in the future!!! Our first contact with the hotel was by email to arrange airport pickup, and Mr. Hak the manager responded very promptly. As many reviews have mentioned, Mr. Hak is extremely professional and his attention to detail shows up in many ways small and big at the hotel. The landscaping (which is being expanded to include a pond) is lush and beautiful. A late afternoon by the lovely pool is a perfect way to end your day after seeing the temples. There are comfortable lounge chairs, umbrellas and three cabanas with ceiling fans. The rooms are clean and pleasant, with very comfortable beds and remarkably effective air conditioning--nice after a long dusty day. Each room has a lovely patio or balcony with ceiling fan. The breakfast menu is not extensive but what is offered is fresh and well-prepared. But the thing that really made our trip was Joy--our fabulous driver who is also on staff at the Sonalong. From our airport transfers to our temple tours to making sure we tried the best of Siem Reap's street food to introducing his son to our son so that he would have someone his own age to play with, Joy demonstrated both the incredible hospitality of the Cambodian people and the level of customer service you can expect at Sonalong.

Room Tip: If you have trouble with stairs, ask for a ground floor room. Each bungalow has two guest rooms--on...

Drove there ourselves, hotel signs very difficult to see,got there in the end.Made very welcome staff very attentive and wanting to please.had problems with really bad drain smell in room and moved the next day.we had 2 rooms next to each other in our own bungalow 4 children (10 up to age 26 !)in one room and us in the next.worked well .food was good pool was great ,as was landscaping /garden, made us feel good about our choise.situated a bit out of town had to tuk tuk in,10mins and $4 with 6 of us into town so not bad.the hotel runs a free bus into town we didnt use it as we found it ran at compleatly the wrong times for families,We would however use this hotel again ,kids only activities in Cambodia are nonexistant so pool was essential,..

Our recent three night stay at the Sonalong Boutique Resort was a fabulous experience. This is a mini resort that is an oasis of tranquility set back from the everyday life that goes on around it in Siem Reap. The room itself is comfortable but not exquisite, however the surroundings, the pool area, the open air restaurant area and the fantastic and attentive staff go to show how well this property is managed. The location is great with a short Tuk Tuk ride to the tourist shopping areas and restaurants. Mr. Hak (the owner) and his staff will make you feel like you are special at this resort. I am pleased to recommend this hotel.

We were booked into the Sonalong in late September but unfortunatly the floods prevented us staying. The owner Mr Hak found us other accommodation but as we had heard so much about his place we hired a tut tut to take us through the flood waters just for a look. Sonalong is definitely a boutique guest house. Rooms are large and well spaced away from neighbours, with screens on the doors and double glass doors to keep down the noise. Verandahs are spacious and are complete with a ceiling fan. The grounds are well kept with plants labelled for guests information. We had the chance to try Mrs Haks cooking at our accommodation and it is first rate. This will be our definite choice next time.

Great stay at this lovely place. Really helpful staff and clean, spacious rooms, great clean pool. Nice to stay in the quieter side of town, just a quick tuk tuk from the markets and restaraunts. Lovely gardens and great breakfast pancakes. Highly recommend for a relaxing stay in Siem Riep.

More than the lovely pool, the beautiful garden setting and the friendly staff, when we had to evacuate the area due to unusual and severe flooding, the owner and staff went above and beyond to help us out. We were scheduled to stay another night and instead of charging us for the unused night, he arranged for our transport to and lodgings at another hotel on higher ground. He worked on extremely short notice with the other hotel , which was more expensive, to have us pay only his lower rate. We are incredibly grateful to him and his genuinely concerned staff for the care we received. He truly was a trip saver!
