Very unique experience going into the floating forest. I've never quite experienced something like that before. It is almost a surreal feeling traveling through on the small paddle boat. It was about 20 dollars us for the trip and it was worth it. If you want to try and see something different go take a look.

Yet again I read poor reviews from unhappy visitors for this wonderful half-day trip from Siem Reap and cannot understand how or why people seem to have had such a bad experience. We had the most memorable hour sailing amongst the mangroves and along the flooded main street of Kampong Phluk and didn't have any unpleasant encounters at all!
Our visit followed a tranquil cruise on Tonle Sap and we arrived at Kampong Phluk where we transferred to a small canoe, rowed by a local lady who had her small child strapped to her back.
She expertly guided us through the flooded forest and mangroves until we arrived in the central part of the village.
We've seen several stilted villages set over the water in various countries, but Kampong Phluk was certainly the most photogenic. Children splashed and swam in the water around our canoe while families sat and waved to us from their stilt houses.
I'm glad we visited at the end of the rainy season as I'm sure the sights wouldn't have been half as impressive had there been roads instead of rivers.

A trip to siem reap won't not be complete with out a trip to kompong phluk.
About a 40 min tuk tuk drive into the countryside through rural villages you will meet a boat the will take you through the stilted villages out into tonle sap taking about a hour.
The will then offer to take you into the mangroves on a small boat for $10 per person, this part of the trip is not worth it and you don't actually go into the mangroves apart from when the driver is asking for a tip.
This is a worth while and relaxing trip after doing the temples. You won't regret the $ 20 cost.

$20 per person is expensive by Cambodia standards but the trip is very colourful and for that you enjoy a boat for your group, in our case just two people so actually worth the money. Yes you may be intruding on people’s lives by floating past taking photographs, but this form of tourism now is a large part of this villages’ income so I suppose we should balance our concerns against that value. And it is an excellent photographic opportunity. We were offered ‘extras’ on our trip, stop at a restaurant for a drink and we stopped to chat about a voluntary excercise at a school and the possibility of a small paddled boat ride through the mangrove trees. These we politely declined as time for us was tight and we felt no pressure at all as our declining their offers was accepted without question. Our boat driver guide spoke enough English to answer any questions and it was a good way to see a side of life of Cambodia on water that we otherwise would not have experienced.

I really don't understand why there are so many average/poor reviews on such a fantastic experience. It's a unique scenery . It's true the residents live in poverty but no one is forcing anyone to take the boat ride We took 2 hour private boat ride and it was well worth US $20 per person. We were not scammed. We enjoyed the ride and saw amazing sites: life on houses on stilts, floating pig farms. We were not sked to make donations to orphanages. Overall Kompong Pluk is a fantastic experience.
