“Angkor - Thommanon - Great small complicated Temple”
Review of Thommanon

Located just outside of the eastern Victory Gate of the Angkor Thom complex is a pair of Hindu Temples dating back to the early construction of the Angkor complex. Thommanon is on the northern side of the track and is not often visited by many tourists meaning you can lose yourself within its walls. It is a complicated and detailed little structure which offers a visitor a degree of exclusivity and the ability to lose oneself in the history a bit. I only spent a short time here but did feel more attached to this place then some of the other larger overrun places. Stop here and indulge yourself. Its worth it.

This little temple is on your left soon after you leave the Angkor Thom complex via the Victory Gate. It is so refreshing to visit a small temple like this and have the whole place to yourself. It is very well preserved and rarely visited by other tourists. English signs at the site tell you a bit about the place. It is a Hindu temple built in the 11thC with many images of Shiva and Vishnu. Other reliefs show scenes from the Ramayana. The temple forms a paired with the Chau Say Thevoda temple on the other side of the street.

Built in the classical Angkor Wat style, the Thommanon maybe small but it's sculptural decoration is very good. And the fact that it's small lends it to better exploration.

The original temple complex was encased in a laterite wall, most of which were torn down by the French to make the road in front of it. After alighting from one's vehicle, one is greeted by the fine red dust of Cambodia. And then there's the temple - the apsaras on the walls are very well carved, as well as virtually the entire surface of the temple, just like Angkor Wat.

Access to the interior is through miniature versions of the scary steps of Angkor. Inside are exquisite deep relief sculptures, and the ceiling has been restored, showing that in ancient times the corbelled vault was actually hidden by a ceiling.

To the right of the main structure is a gateway or gopura, and then there are smaller "libraries", and to the left is another gopura. All dressed in fine sculpture. The wall is intact in places.

This petite but exquisite temple is quite photogenic and is worth a visit!

This is a very small temple and shouldnt take more than 30 minutes even to get a close look but if you have time i would recommend visiting this place nonetheless. This is not one of the popular temples so it is very quite. Hardly any tourist which is nice after having tourist come out from every corner of every temple at Angkor Wat.

The Devatas or the divine female figure carvings can be seen in profusion in the temple – making them the main attractions. They depict elegant flower crowns, distinctive arm and ankle bands, belts, necklace, and complex hand gestures or mudra.
