It's a one hour hike up, mostly under the shadow of trees, and is a good break from the crowdy Angkor Wat. The scupltures in the river was beautiful.

This is a lot further out than the other sights at Angkor but definitely worth seeing. I would recommend you stop to see Banteay Srei on the way (but go early).
Kbal Spean is about a 40 minute walk to the river and carvings but there's lots to see on the way (look out for the lizards on the trees).
The carvings are amazing, don't forget to look downstream, we nearly missed it (a local showed us - very helpful, showing us places we wouldn't have found, and didn't ask for money but we did tip him).
Beautiful butterflies by the waterfall too - magical! Dip your feet in the river, the fish will softly nibble on them!

From the reviews, it was described as a walk. It wasn't - in places wooden steps had to be installed. Kbal Spean is not for the physically unfit, but for those who can do moderate hiking - and templed out from all of those ancient Khmer temples - Kbal Spean offers sights like rock formations, dense forest, and a cool, shaded stream with a series of falls and eroded sculptures set into the stream bed itself. There were hundreds of lingas or fertility symbols, symbolically fertilizing the waters. There were small shrines built into caves. The water was almost cold to the touch and for those who have sweated a gallon, is a welcome respite from the heat.

Recommended for the physically fit only!

Waterfalls, 1000 Lingas, and the Big Buddha. Long way from SR timewise because roads are horrific, but beatiful mountain scenery. Oh and make sure you try a red banana.
