“A birthday treat”
Reviewed January 18, 2014

Last evening friends took us to dinner at Mattar's as a birthday-eve treat for my husband. I have been to Mattar's before for holiday parties, for drinks, and for light supper, but this was the first time in a while that I'd gone for dinner. I like Mattar's a lot, and am never really disappointed. Last night it was quite busy when we arrived, but reservations allowed us to be seated promptly. Customers were comprised of a range of age groups, and included young couples, families celebrating a birthday, and groups of friends. Ambience is comfortable and welcoming, and Mattar personally greeted guests and circulated visibly, making sure things were running smoothly, which they were. The menu is bistro style and included a nice array of small plates, appetizers, salads, pasta dishes, and entrees. My husband and I ordered a very nice risotto with scallops, shrimp, and spinach that followed the evening's salad special, which was ample to share. Our friends had a black bass special and a pasta dish, and they, like us were pleased with their selections. A variety of biscotti accompanied the last of our wine and espresso, and they were quite good - characterized as being baked on site. As nicely done as our dinners were, service was nicer still. Our server, Brian, was terrific. He was friendly, patient and helpful to our friends (a couple of a advanced years) and he seemed genuinely invested in seeing that we all enjoyed ourselves. Thank you, Brian! One minor criticism- the crusty rolls could have been good, but they were stale, and the olive oil on the table was of minor grade, makings this a less than great way to start things off.
We will go back, nonetheless!

“Always made to feel right at home”
Reviewed December 26, 2013

While our families know each other, when we occassionally visit Mattar's, most often the staff doesn't know that (or at least not at first). Thus, my review is based on how we were treated regardless. Promptly seated, menus presented, water glasses filled, bread rolls oftered....all within 5 minutes of walking through the door. But don't take this to mean we were rushed. In fact we debated the wine list for a while until making a seleciton and were never hurried. The "tapas" appy was good, with the babaganoush having that nice slightly smoky flavor profile and the hummas not being too garlicy. My cajun rubbed steak was cooked and seasoned perfectly and the sides were good. We split a dessert that was all we needed, as I was way too full when I got up from the table. It was nice to see the entire Mattar family just before the holidays. These are great people and good publicans, running a more upscale restaurant than one would expect in Warren County. Don't hesitate to visit!

“Fresh food, friendly service”
Reviewed December 11, 2013

We always wanted to have dinner here and finally stopped in without a reservation tonight. They were busy for a Wednesday night, but showed us a table right away. Pressed for time, we told the waitress that we needed to order, eat and pay the bill within 40 minutes. She accommodated us with a smile. Our drinks arrived ,and shortly after our food...which was the freshest, home made lobster ravioli with a lobster tail on a bed of spinach. So delicious!!!!A very satisfying dinner. The manager came to our table 3 times to chat and obviously loves his job. We definately will return to this gem of a restaurant. So glad we came.

“Mattar's”
Reviewed November 8, 2013

We have dined at Mattar's many times, both when it was a traditional restaurant and now that it is a bistro. It is somewhat off the beaten path, but well worth the trip. The owner told us that he had to make the transition to bistro in order to remain competitive. I can't see that the customer has had to give up that much. Sure, the wine list is much smaller and there are no linens or tablecloths, but the food is still delicious and now, even more reasonably priced. We ate there just last night and my wife ordered the veal and I had shrimp with artichoke. Both were huge portions. We stayed afterwards as the establishment is now hosting a comedy club in the basement on select nights. Great food and great entertainment.
