Last evening friends took us to dinner at Mattar's as a birthday-eve treat for my husband. I have been to Mattar's before for holiday parties, for drinks, and for light supper, but this was the first time in a while that I'd gone for dinner. I like Mattar's a lot, and am never really disappointed. Last night it was quite busy when we arrived, but reservations allowed us to be seated promptly. Customers were comprised of a range of age groups, and included young couples, families celebrating a birthday, and groups of friends. Ambience is comfortable and welcoming, and Mattar personally greeted guests and circulated visibly, making sure things were running smoothly, which they were. The menu is bistro style and included a nice array of small plates, appetizers, salads, pasta dishes, and entrees. My husband and I ordered a very nice risotto with scallops, shrimp, and spinach that followed the evening's salad special, which was ample to share. Our friends had a black bass special and a pasta dish, and they, like us were pleased with their selections. A variety of biscotti accompanied the last of our wine and espresso, and they were quite good - characterized as being baked on site. As nicely done as our dinners were, service was nicer still. Our server, Brian, was terrific. He was friendly, patient and helpful to our friends (a couple of a advanced years) and he seemed genuinely invested in seeing that we all enjoyed ourselves. Thank you, Brian! One minor criticism- the crusty rolls could have been good, but they were stale, and the olive oil on the table was of minor grade, makings this a less than great way to start things off.
We will go back, nonetheless!
