The location was peaceful, not much too do or options for food.

The lodge has a good location by the river. We really liked our stay at Kubu Lodge although the chalets are quite basic. Also the bathroom is quite basic. The windows don't close properly, so we used the extra blankets to cover the windows in order not to be cold at night. There were three beds in our chalet so there was some choise how to sleep.

The chalets are surrounded by a nice garden and there is a pool.

Breakfast can be enjoyed at the terrace with river view but beware of monkeys (or rather they don't do anything to you but may steal some of your breakfast. This happened to me and some others).

Breakfast and dinner were good.

They offer three game drives per day, early morning, morning and afternoon. The morning and afternoon game drives can be taken on a boat which actually was better than on the jeep. We got closer to the animals and saw more of them on the boat. There is a huge amount of animals in the park so you are guaranteed to see a lot. The guide drivers were excellent (except the first one who didn't understand where to stop the car for us to view the animals and photograph them, it was always against the sun although we tried to ask to go a bit further etc. Probably he doesn't take photos himself. With the other ones there was no problem, they always stopped the car so that the sun wasn't directly shining at us). The early morning game drive isn't worth the trouble of not getting breakfast before it (less anymals than during the other drives).

Service was friendly but we had a problem at check-in. Somehow they had wrong information about our reservation (what was included and what not) and the reception agent was totally helpless although we had a written confirmation. But finally we got the manager and she took care of the issue immediately and we got what we paid for.

I have stayed at Kubu Lodge in July of both 2007 and also 2009. Both times I traveled with a group of photographers renting all of the chalets (I think 12 of them). The staff has always been great at tailoring a breakfast pack to our needs. Dinners are excellent. The bar is hosted by a great guy, so say hello to Obie for me if you go. Management can also arrange fishing and photoshoots from small boats for a reasonable fee. Rooms are clean with no insects. All rooms have showers, mosquito nets, etc. Great mix of dependable room and reasonable price. Highly recommended.

we had a good time here recently. the location is beautiful, the food was good, the staff were friendly. they organised all our activities without a problem.
if I had one criticism, it would be that they appeared (rightly or wrongly) to be very anxious at all times about money (even from the initial booking), as if we were going to run away without paying or something.
but we had a great time

I just returned from a Botswana, South Africa trip, after doing a lot of on line research on places to stay and visit. I was so pleased with my choice of Kubu Lodge at Chobe in Botswana. I wanted a high quality service experience but not the great crowds or ridiculous prices of some of the lodges in this area. Kubu surpassed my expectations. The people are wonderfully helpful, our guide, Brave, was an outstanding guide who was my 16 yr old nephew's favorite part of the experience. I loved the chalet right on the beautiful Chobe river, and the whole setting of the place was tranquil and inviting. We had a special treat at the restaurant, a special table with its own private fire pit and beautiful surroundings, and staff came and regaled us with stories and charmed us throughout the evening. For me this was the perfect combination of an authentic African feel coupled with thoughtful service, topped off with wonderful river and road based game viewing.

We stayed at Kubu for four nights recently on recommendation from a travel agent in Maun and we were not disappointed! The chalets are very comfortable yet rustic thatched roof units with all of the needed comforts. The staff is very courtious, provide excellent service and the food is outstanding. We were there over the Christmas holiday and they had the dining area all decked out in lights and decorations. It was wonderful. They also arranged for all of our game drives, which were all very successful (our guide Brave was awesome) , a trip to the local snake park and also an excursion to see Victoria Falls in Zimbabwe. They made everything very easy and relaxed. Sharon was keeping an eye on us. We would highly recommend this lodge.

  • Liked — staff, food, service, activities

More than a year after our visit to Botswana I still feel compelled to write a glowing review about this great place. We have also stayed in other lodges in the Kasane area, but the Kubu Lodge is by far the nicest place and offers the best value for your money (in fact, we stayed at one other place that cost about 3 times as much as Kubu Lodge and wasn't half as nice).
The lodge is located directly on the banks of the Chobe river, which means that hippos are regular visitors during the night. The lodge area is artificially irrigated during the dry season and is therefore lush green throughout the year.
Accommodation is in small thatched cabins that contain a double bed and a couch that can be used as an extra bed. Whereas the huts are seemingly assembled in a rather crude fashion the insides are very tasteful and also pretty much bug-proof. We noticed that even the smallest vents and gaps were securely covered with insect screens. The bathrooms are a little bit on the small side and have a slightly improvised feeling to them. You won't find golden water taps at the Kubu Lodge, but still this lodge offers a very high level of comfort. Whoever designed and built the cabins was successful in implementing a rustic charm without being shabby or kitschy.
Also very noteworthy is the excellent food that is offered. The Kubu Lodge is a small operation and the owners are also the cooks. In the evenings, there is typically a choice of 3 different dishes that are all freshly prepared and of the highest quality. For breakfast, there is a large buffet with hot dishes made to order.
Like most other places in the area, Kubu Lodge offers a variety of Safari activities. Be sure not to miss the boat tour on the Chobe river. We experienced one of the highest "wildlife densities" of our trip on that tour (we saw hippos, lions, giraffe, elephants, crocodiles, monitor lizards, kudus, impalas, and many different birds).
If you are staying in the Kasane area the Kubu Lodge should definitely be your first choice!

  • Liked — Great location, charming rooms, excellent food
  • Disliked — The bathrooms are a little bit small (but don't let that keep you from visiting Kubu Lodge!)
