“a good family destination”
Reviewed March 8, 2014

This is a comfortable hotel; the food is good, and the rooms are well appointed and large. The separate children's room is an especially good idea, though it would be even better if it had direct access to the bathroom. The activity centre was helpful in arranging game drives and boat rides on the river. Two small problems: the dining rooms closes between meal times, and there is really is nowhere else to go for food. And some of the rooms are a long walk away from the lobby, the dining room and the souvenir shop. The rooms are all one flight of stairs up, and there is no elevator.

Room Tip: try to get a room that is not too far from the lobby and the dining room; it can be a long walk if i...

The lodge is overlooking the river, with a big pool. Rooms are ok (nothing special), buffet breakfast and dinner were good (mass event (queues) due to organized group). Staff friendly. The afternoon boat cruise and morning drive were reasonably priced and a great experience. All in all good value for money.

This is more of a resort than a lodge. Front desk service is hit or miss depending on the mood of the folks on staff and whether an obnoxious tourist has pissed them off! Spacious, cleverly appointed rooms. Buffet meals are nothing exotic, just good fare. Liked the fact that the safari groups took off right from their front door, and the river cruise from their back!!

Kasane is a one horse town with the National Forest being its main draw. Enjoyed what the town had to offer in a morning- pleasant, sleepy, and filled with genuine people-- a lovely time.

We spent 2 nights at the Chobe Safar Lodge in a river room.

The rooms were nice and clean with good facilities, although there is no fridge which was a bit of a hassle. The lodge is not really much of a lodge more of a resort. It is close to a local supermarket, bottle shop and bank which is handy.

We did not eat at the buffet after bad reviews from fellow guests so walked 1.5-2km down the road and found a great little local restaurant - coffee and curry - indian but has a variety of other foods there too. Very well priced and I would highly recommend it over the food at the lodge.

Very easy to organise activities - we did 2 game drives and a day trip to Vic Falls (don't bother with the guided tour that would be a waste of money it is very easy to do on your own).

Very close to the entry to Chobe National Park which made the game drives very handy (6am - 9am or 3pm - 6pm).

All in all a good experience.

My husband and I were originally booked into the campsite adjacent to the hotel, but after 10 nights camping we decided to upgrade to a room and we're so glad we did.

The room cost us about £75 which is expensive for Botswana but we thought it was worth it.

Our room was large, with a bath and separate shower, huge comfy bed with mozzie nets and a balcony (although there are monkeys everywhere so it's not a good idea to keep the balcony doors open).

There's a lovely bar overlooking the river where you can get nice cocktails and they have a good wine list. The restaurant (which is lovely) only does buffet at night which we wouldn't usually go for but the choices were superb and the food was excellent... well worth the £15 each that we paid.

There's also a spa but we didn't try that, and a gift shop selling reasonably priced items.

The service in the hotel was excellent.

We actually left our 4x4 here and the hotel transported us to the Zimbabwe border and arranged for someone there to pick us up so that we could go to Zimbabwe overnight to see the falls. This was really easy although it did cost $55 each to cross the border, and another $50 each to get into the falls which is a lot of money for just 1 night.

All in all we really enjoyed our night here and would definitely stay again.

I want to be nice about this hotel because it has lot going for it in many ways but it does not meet expected standards I am afraid. It is a great concept and an ideal base for a Safari and water trips and is located right by the river. The hotel has all you need with a pool and lots of walks and recreation areas. The bar is good with some great views over the river. Be advised, the Wifi is very poor and can only be obtained in the reception area and is unreliable. The receptionists are helpful if at times a little uncommunicative, but efficient enough.

The rooms are quite quirky and clean enough but there are very high ceilings with insect life and the AC is not adequate. It would be nice to come back after a hot safari to a cool relaxing room. They have fans as well and with both “full on” you can get an acceptable temperature but you will have to endure the noise all night or get sweaty. The beds are distinctly average with sheets that will not stay put which is annoying. No fridge. The bedroom adjoins the bathroom although it has a notional divider and a curtain. Room service menu is poor.

The restaurant is open air and has a lot going for it. It could be very romantic and atmospheric but it is far too dark at night. You cannot see the food you are eating or read the wine list in some locations, it is farcical. The waiters are friendly, polite but not very efficient and again, sometimes uncommunicative. When placing an order, some show no acknowledgement at all and disappear without a word. It is strange! The food falls short. A good selection on a buffet basis and the cooks are very nice and friendly but the standard of cooking is sadly lacking. Breakfast is better and a good selection.

This is not a top quality hotel and has so much more potential. Better trained staff and more attention to detail would lift this place to a great destination hotel.

Room Tip: Some of the rooms are quite a way from the main complex.

We had booked a campsite, but when we arrived, discovered our 4X4 would not fit on the allocated site. The campground manager very quickly rectified this by moving us to a site big enough for four vehicles! As campers, we were able to use all the hotel facilities. The pool and deck is beautiful, and very welcome after a hot and dusty drive from Ihaha. We left our vehicle and took a transfer for Victoria Falls for the day and returned to find everything safe and sound. My wife had a massage at the on-site facility and was very happy with the service. We used the wifi in the lobby (a bit of a mission, but with perseverance we were able to contact family).

The grounds of the property are well-tended and we enjoyed watching the resident wart-hogs foraging on the lawns. The "beware of crocodiles" sign on the walk back to the camp-site reminds you where you are.

Would definitely stay here again if we are fortunate enough to find ourselves back in northern Botswana again.
