We spent 2 nights at the Chobe Safar Lodge in a river room.

The rooms were nice and clean with good facilities, although there is no fridge which was a bit of a hassle. The lodge is not really much of a lodge more of a resort. It is close to a local supermarket, bottle shop and bank which is handy.

We did not eat at the buffet after bad reviews from fellow guests so walked 1.5-2km down the road and found a great little local restaurant - coffee and curry - indian but has a variety of other foods there too. Very well priced and I would highly recommend it over the food at the lodge.

Very easy to organise activities - we did 2 game drives and a day trip to Vic Falls (don't bother with the guided tour that would be a waste of money it is very easy to do on your own).

Very close to the entry to Chobe National Park which made the game drives very handy (6am - 9am or 3pm - 6pm).

All in all a good experience.

My husband and I were originally booked into the campsite adjacent to the hotel, but after 10 nights camping we decided to upgrade to a room and we're so glad we did.

The room cost us about £75 which is expensive for Botswana but we thought it was worth it.

Our room was large, with a bath and separate shower, huge comfy bed with mozzie nets and a balcony (although there are monkeys everywhere so it's not a good idea to keep the balcony doors open).

There's a lovely bar overlooking the river where you can get nice cocktails and they have a good wine list. The restaurant (which is lovely) only does buffet at night which we wouldn't usually go for but the choices were superb and the food was excellent... well worth the £15 each that we paid.

There's also a spa but we didn't try that, and a gift shop selling reasonably priced items.

The service in the hotel was excellent.

We actually left our 4x4 here and the hotel transported us to the Zimbabwe border and arranged for someone there to pick us up so that we could go to Zimbabwe overnight to see the falls. This was really easy although it did cost $55 each to cross the border, and another $50 each to get into the falls which is a lot of money for just 1 night.

All in all we really enjoyed our night here and would definitely stay again.

I want to be nice about this hotel because it has lot going for it in many ways but it does not meet expected standards I am afraid. It is a great concept and an ideal base for a Safari and water trips and is located right by the river. The hotel has all you need with a pool and lots of walks and recreation areas. The bar is good with some great views over the river. Be advised, the Wifi is very poor and can only be obtained in the reception area and is unreliable. The receptionists are helpful if at times a little uncommunicative, but efficient enough.

The rooms are quite quirky and clean enough but there are very high ceilings with insect life and the AC is not adequate. It would be nice to come back after a hot safari to a cool relaxing room. They have fans as well and with both “full on” you can get an acceptable temperature but you will have to endure the noise all night or get sweaty. The beds are distinctly average with sheets that will not stay put which is annoying. No fridge. The bedroom adjoins the bathroom although it has a notional divider and a curtain. Room service menu is poor.

The restaurant is open air and has a lot going for it. It could be very romantic and atmospheric but it is far too dark at night. You cannot see the food you are eating or read the wine list in some locations, it is farcical. The waiters are friendly, polite but not very efficient and again, sometimes uncommunicative. When placing an order, some show no acknowledgement at all and disappear without a word. It is strange! The food falls short. A good selection on a buffet basis and the cooks are very nice and friendly but the standard of cooking is sadly lacking. Breakfast is better and a good selection.

This is not a top quality hotel and has so much more potential. Better trained staff and more attention to detail would lift this place to a great destination hotel.

Room Tip: Some of the rooms are quite a way from the main complex.

We had booked a campsite, but when we arrived, discovered our 4X4 would not fit on the allocated site. The campground manager very quickly rectified this by moving us to a site big enough for four vehicles! As campers, we were able to use all the hotel facilities. The pool and deck is beautiful, and very welcome after a hot and dusty drive from Ihaha. We left our vehicle and took a transfer for Victoria Falls for the day and returned to find everything safe and sound. My wife had a massage at the on-site facility and was very happy with the service. We used the wifi in the lobby (a bit of a mission, but with perseverance we were able to contact family).

The grounds of the property are well-tended and we enjoyed watching the resident wart-hogs foraging on the lawns. The "beware of crocodiles" sign on the walk back to the camp-site reminds you where you are.

Would definitely stay here again if we are fortunate enough to find ourselves back in northern Botswana again.

We were on a morning safari boat trip at Chobe National park in Botswana. Our base was Victoria Falls in Zimbabwe, so making this trip required the burden of a double entry visa, in order to go back to sleep at our hotel.
Our point of departure was the chobe lodge, where the dock was to get to our boat.
Our return was timed to coincide with. Lunch hour, and from what I read in the trip itinerary, I had expected to be picking at chicken bones on paper plates on the open boat.
I am not going to describe the meal in order to state this as a dining experience, but I wanted to go on record stating that what could have been a very simple box lunch, then hit the jeeps for the land portion of the park, turned out to be a very nice meal with many choices, in a beautiful setting overlooking the pool deck and Zambezi river.
Oh, and because it rained and was overcast such that we were chilled, having a bowl of their cauliflower and blue cheese soup was just fantastic.
Really, quite a nice buffet at a relaxed pace to make a great full day.

We booked a thatched lodge, it was too far away from everything, so we moved to normal room. We arrived at 10.30am, room not ready until 2.00,, with no chance before which we thought a bit much. The staff seam very un trained, i am sure one of them couldn't read, she went to read the ice cream and said it was nutmeg (it was cashoo nut). The food may have been OK but the chefs don't no how to cook. Mussels dried up with mushy old crab sticks a found it the plate. Fruit juice like water, meat dry or under cooked. Sometimes it was buffet in the evening, but when not, you always helped yourself to desert, kept under netting, but still had mosquito's in there, also a Beatle in the ice cream. At night it was so difficult to eat at all as you had to keep waving ou hands over your plate to keep the mosquito's of your food. We didn't look forward to the meals one bit and was glad we only had 3 nights there.
The game drivers appeared less knowledgeable than kruga with out much passion. Every drive you where told which truck to go in, with not the same people or driver and we nearly always went the same route, good way many rules and yet not organised to suit the customer. The last 3 game drives there was 10 people in the trucks. This was no 4* hotel, And we where so glad to leave

Room Tip: Don,t go there

Lots to do here! An activity office will quickly fill your day and your dreams! Boat cruises , land safaris. We found the smaller boat cruise was much better, they were able to bring the boat right up to the banks of the river giving you best photo opps! Ask for boat operator "Ian", he gave us an incredible boat cruise never to forget! The smaller boats are very stable and would recommend this type of wildlife cruise, we saw the bigger boats packed shoulder to shoulder and here we were comfortably getting the best viewing chances right up where the bigger boats can't get to! Land safaris were awesome, densest population of Elephants, we even spotted a Leopard in the tree, on the way out, so keep your eyes on the trees! All big Five were spotted on our tour!
