“Highlight of a five week trip for game viewing”
Reviewed November 15, 2013

The rooms are, as others have commented, a little tired and they have those useless eco bulbs which are supposed to give the same amount of light as regular bulbs but use a lot less electricity. Except they don't give anything like as much light.

The check-in was, however, efficient and the on-site excursion booking office was excellent. We managed to book a late river game-viewing trip which proved to be superb. Elephants swimming in the water. Great stuff. They really are incredibly well geared up to the point where you can rent top-end cameras and just slip your own SD card in to take those close-up pictures of a lifetime. No, we didn't. But you can and perhaps should.

Also took an all-day game drive which was terrific value but I am now officially sick of looking at elephants. The first one or two is exciting . Even the first 100 or so. But there were literally thousands of them. And buffalo. And giraffes. The places is teeming with big game.

Even driving from Chobe down to Maun (outside the park) there are elephants crossing the road for the first 50 miles or so.

Having travelled and worked in Africa for years and been to half a dozen game parks including Kruger and Etosha on this trip alone I must say I have never seen such a concentration of wildlife. If you only go to one game park in your life then make it Chobe and, in case it was due to the time of year then go in August.

Amazing.

The food was good too and the restaurant location beside the river is idyllic.

A unique hotel with a very exotic looking dining area. A very good buffet selection with very good food. However, the hotel is "tired" as another recent reviewer has stated. The front desk staff could use some help with customer service. The location right on the river is great for access to river tour boats to see animals. Chobe Game Reserve entrance is only a few kilometers away ( 10 km.?)

The accommodation and rooms here are spacious and comfortable although a bit tired. The restaurant is good with a varied menu but the dining room is so ill lit it's difficult to make out all the choices and the meat is often tough. The staff, especially in the restaurant, are uncooperative on the whole. Not a happy bunch. It could take ten minutes for someone to bring coffee and another ten before someone wandered over with the milk.

For birders there are a good variety within the hotel grounds, especially around the campsite. Warthogs, mongoose and baboons provide entertainment on the lawns and watch for the large crocodile which patrols in the river beneath the bar.

We spent a week here on a Saga organised trip. This was a bit too long as the boat trips all went in the same direction which quickly became repetitive. The game drives were organised by Saga with Bushtracks who were excellent with knowledgeable guides but I don't think the hotel use them. Late evening drives seem to be best for sightings of lion and leopard. Chobe is an excellent reserve giving good chances of observing a large variety of wildlife. Especially elephant, of which there seems to be rather too many as some were in very poor condition (it was the end of the dry season), buffalo and impala.

The Chobe Safari Lodge sits right on the Chobe River, which is perfect for jumping onto a boat to tour the River area. We took several river cruises, and it was great not having to travel far. It was also fun to watch the warthogs and monkeys from our room lanai!

The hotel has a very nice common area with many seating areas, fairly extensive buffet, bar, and pleasant outdoor area with both shady and sunny seating.

The rooms were fair - basic and clean although dated. The mosquito netting smelled clean and fresh, unlike the previous lodge we stayed in. The bed was very comfortable.

Overall a great place to rest after a long day of amazing animal viewing.

This would have been a great spot when it first opened, but the rooms were old, the carpet and bedding were worn, the shower slippery and the doors to the balcony not that secure. The food in the buffet was poor and repetitive over the two nights we were there. The only advantage is its location and service of the staff.

This was certainly inferior to the other lodge we stayed at (Muchenche) , however it represented good value. The comunal area of the lodge was very pleasent and the rooms were perfectly adequate. The downside is that they do get large tour groups coming through.

if you have to find somewhere yo have to save some money on your African holiday, this lodge is certainly an option. It is actuallly nicer that what some of the internet photos make out. You will not feel you are in a down market hotel.

What a great time we had at the Chobe Game Lodge, Johan and his staff were like one big family. Our time there was very special, the food, rooms and general attitude was excellent.
The game drives were also prefect we must have seen nearly every animal possible, the drivers just knew the right place to be.Many thanks to all, we would recommend to all.
