“run-down place, very loud road aside”
Reviewed August 18, 2013 via mobile

We stopped at the lodge and were shocked about the small rooms with run-down interior. It was very loud day and night. You could hear the noise from the other rooms but also from the street. The boarder to Zambia and Zimbabwe is very close, there is more traffic than usual.
The restaurant is really bad, no typical food, mainly burgers and chips. Absolutely not to be recommended.

We were with a 4 x 4 adventure tour group and as such were destined to stay in the camp site. But, after 7 days of tents we were ready for a comfortable night and as such we booked into the Lodge. What a relief. Their campsites are not so great! Comfortable Beds, lots of hot water and a great clean room. Only downside, the soundproofing in the building between rooms is not so great and you can hear everything your neighbour says. Good value for money.

If you're just going to stay overnight and take advantage of the boat cruise down the Chobe River and game drive in Chobe National park, then this will do.

The bathrooms are good, hot water, clean, toilet paper. Water is not drinkable though. They are all over the site so no shortage.

There are little huts / covered areas on each campsite, which was nice.

The campsite was very close quarters though - you were on top of other campsites. If you aren't used to camping near people, this could be a problem (though I was too exhausted to care with the long days / early wakeup).

I never used the pool, but others in my group did. They just said it was small.

Wifi is sketchy, and doesn't work all the time (was down the 24 hours i was there).

but as a base for seeing Chobe wildlife, this will do.

There are two tent-camping choices in the town of Kasane. Thebe is the wrong choice. (The right choice would have been Chobe River Lodge). Let me explain why Thebe camping had vacancies; Please keep in mind I am only referring to the Thebe camping, not their hotel.
NOISE - expect little sleep. This campground is custom designed for large group camping. Especially the over-land-truck variety. These groups like to get up and go before dawn. Therefore they wake up the entire campground by turning on their diesel engines to idle for 15 minutes while banging equipment, yelling, etc. Expect this at 04:30 every morning.
COUNT YOUR MONEY - three different ladies on three separate days at the reception desk did their best to give themselves large tips. Double-check the prices they ask you to pay, count your change, and if they tell you they can not make change for the (small) bills you gave them...but say they will get change and deliver it your campsite (but never do), make sure you go get your change in the office yourself. You will notice their sad faces and no friendly greetings when you arrive to request your change back.
POOL - the pool is as green with algae as the river itself. Not exaggerating. The only biotic thing not in the pool are the hippos...and people seem to avoid it too.
RIVER - you cant get to it. There is an electrified Hippo-fence between the camp and river. Not a bad thing to keep the hippos out, or humans in, but you will have only a limited view of the river.
PRICES - they charge more for everything than their competitor at Chobe River Lodge. This includes camping fees, tours, beer, etc.
FACILITIES - considering Africa standards, they arent bad. Basic minor dilapidation such as broken doors, handles, hooks, hinges, locks etc. Hot water pulses on and off, so you will freeze then fry. But the main ablution facility is a big dough-nut shaped building with alternating stalls of toilets and showers. It is co-ed and you can hear everything that everyone is doing. I will leave it at that...
BAR - the bar/restaurant was nice. It is the only part that is green, the rest of the place is concrete and dirt.
CONCLUSION - when I visited the OTHER camping place in town - Chobe River Lodge - I went into a deep depression. Seeing what I could-have-had instead of Thebe camping was too much. I really blew our vacation in Kasane. We went to Chobe River Lodge for a (cheaper) river tour with professional friendly and honest staff, and then stayed the rest of the evening at the (cheaper) bar/restaurant. There is no comparison here: Chobe River Lodge camping is 4 or 5 stars, their facilities are beautiful, and for less money than Thebe camping. I urge you to check out the alternative camping in Kasane town...and make a reservation in ADVANCE. The only solace I had for choosing Thebe camping was Chobe River Lodge camping was fully booked...for good reasons.

Room Tip: There is no place quiet in this campground, but closest to the water is the farthest one can hope to...

This was another stop on our overland tour while we were visiting Chobe. You could break the bank in Chobe, so this place was a relative bargain. We upgraded to a room here, which wasn't cheap, but it was worth it because the room was quite nice. The bed was large and comfy and the bathroom had a nice large shower. The room was clean, comfortable, and air conditioned. I also heard that the restaurant was quite good, though we didn't have an opportunity to eat there. The bar gets big points for having Windhoek on tap--it's the only camp we visited in 20 days that had anything on tap at all.

I only had a couple complaints. First, the camping areas were small. I will say, though, that the camp was set up much nicer than those rowdy overland camps, and I will bet that despite the small size they keep things quiet there. Also, I was annoyed that the whole place was surrounded by an electric fence. I realize most African camps are fenced in (and it's usually electrified), but coming from South Luangwa where the animals roamed freely throughout our camp I was not happy being fenced-in.

My boyfriend and I stayed in a double airconditioned room at Thebe River Lodge for one night at the beginning of March 2013. Until that point in our trip we had mostly stayed at more budget accommodations - backpacker lodges and cheaper guesthouses - but as it was only a one night stop over, and we had just come from a camping trip in the Chobe National Park, we decided to treat ourselves to a more luxury room.
Our room was very well appointed, with a huge and very comfortable double bed, mozzie net, very efficient airconditioning, ensuite bathroom with a nice hot shower, and tea/coffee making facilities. It was quite pricey, and you do get what you pay for, but we would have expected breakfast to be included for the price we paid. It wasn't.
We ate our evening meal at the bar by the river which was a really nice spot, and we had a really nice pub-grub meal. The camping area looked really cool - there were quite a few families staying there and there was a really nice atmosphere. In comparison, the Lodge seemed a bit sterile and impersonal but it was more than adequate for one night.

We were camping in a tent and found a nice spot to set down. We were on overland tour so we did the cruise to sunset and it was beautiful. We saw elephants, crocs and hippos all in their natural element. Saw to hippos fighting (male/female), the male was trying to kill the baby as it was a male as well. The baby will grow up to be a threat to the father. Our guide was SO informative and we learned a lot.
This is about all there is to this spot but we enjoyed it.
Bathroom facilities are the norm for campsites in this part of Africa
