“We didn't intend staying there, but we enjoyed it”
Reviewed January 6, 2010

We had gotten to Copacabana without a reservation as we didn't know what day we would arrive on. The hotel we'd intended staying in was booked up so they sent us to Utama! The hotel is a little kooky, with murals on all the walls including those in the bedrooms, but the place in clean, very cheap and breakfast is included!

The owner and his wife are really friendly and very helpful and allowed us to leave our bags in the hotel when we went off th Isla del Sol to spend the night....note that the Isla del Sol is worth a visit, but not an overnight visit.....so we returned that evening with the rest of the travellers and stayed in Utama instead!

We booked this hotel after reading some good reviews through Lonely Planet. My first preference was La Cupula but they didn't bother to return my email, so we booked via email with Utama who got back to us very promptly. We got to Copacabana by bus and got a free transfer from the bus stop to the hotel (it wasn't that far but the hill up to the hotel is a killer if you aren't acclimatised). When we pulled up outside the hotel, we were met by a porter (who also turned out to be a receptionist/waiter/and jack of all trades around the hotel), and we were given real five-star service. The owners don't speak any english, but are very patient and provide amazing service. We were shown several rooms and took our pick. Our room had a nice view out onto the lake, was very spacious and came with a sitting area with free bottled water. The decor is a bit kitsch, the walls were painted different colours; one wall had a mural on it, the bed had this awful velvetine rug with a tiger print, and cowboy hats were used as lampshades. The bathroom was quite small but adequate. We had a bit of trouble controlling the water temperature in the shower, so the owner came and gave us a demonstration, and when we finally got the hang of it, the water was nice and hot. In the hotel lobby there are couches for you to sit and relax, and they also provide unlimited andean popcorn, lollies, cocoa tea and fresh fruit. Breakfast is included and you get single servings of pancakes, eggs, bread, jam, juice, cereal, yogurt, ham and tomato. We went to Isla Del Sol and bought our boat tickets from the hotel and they also gave us a lift down to the dock in the morning. We left our bags with them and all was in order when we got back. We had such a nice stay at this hotel. I wouldn't hesitate to recommend this hotel to anyone. It doesn't look like much on the outside, nor on the inside either, but if you want amazing hospitality you should definately stay here.
