“A Wonderful Experience… to be repeated again!”
Reviewed August 15, 2014

Once you enter Cortisen am See, you realise you are at a tasteful and warm boutique hotel. From the moment Tamara checked us in, to the last minute we left the hotel we were in good hands, with very courteous service and high quality all over. We chose Cortisen am See for our honeymoon and feel like a tradition in our marriage is about to start, as this hotel is worthy of a visit every year.

Roland, hotel manager, was kind enough to upgrade our room, which we were most impressed with. It is obvious that each room was designed and furnished with care and a passion for perfection. The little iPod details to the toiletries… Oh, and the view! What a view!

Not impressed? Try the restaurant then. We Londoners are a little spoilt when it comes to choice of restaurants, yet Cortisen am See’s restaurant would top many guests’ lists. The food was delicious and the service was of top notch. Too bad, we didn’t have more nights to taste the whole menu. There is also a very decent wine list.

Unfortunately the weather did not permit taking full advantage of the lawn by the lake; yet, even the few hours spent there everyday were very relaxing and enough to convince us for a visit next summer.

The hotel’s location is very central and close to main square of St Wolfgangsee. It also boasts a very high end gym, as well as being a perfect start point for running, if you are a runner like me.

If a gun were put to our head to write one negative point, it may be the indoor smoking-which apparently is legal in Austria. Though, it is limited to the smoking area next to bar, where the nice sofas are a great point to relax.

All in all, we thoroughly enjoyed our stay at the Cortisen am See, and thank Roland for a wonderful honeymoon.

We loved Cortisen Am See! This small, boutique hotel sits right on the lake with the most wonderful views! It is strictly a guests only hotel which makes it very quiet, and feel like home. Beautifully decorated it feels very cosmopolitan. The food was excellent ,the staff friendly, the rooms clean. There is a well equipped exercise room. To our dismay it was rainy and cool while we were there and we were unable to spend time lounging by the lake or enjoying a meal on the lovely terrace. Our room had a balcony overlooking the lake which we did enjoy, a definite must! And St Wolfgang itself is one of the most charming little towns we have ever visited! So you Must visit St Wolfgang, and you Must stay at Cortisen Am See!

Room Tip: Do get a room with a balcony!

We stayed here for several nights as our base for exploring the Salzkammergut. We had the Limelight Suite which was located on the top floor and at the end of the corridor making for a peaceful stay. The room is modern in design and is all quality. It has practical and comfortable furniture and a huge storage area. There is an open bathroom with a good corner bath and a separate shower. Amenities were very good but were not always replenished so we had to fetch more from hotel staff. There were additionals such as an afternoon cake buffet, in room ipod player and a selection of DVD's available when the weather was poor. There was no personal air conditioning or heating but we did not need it during our stay. The room was well insulated and sound proofed and had a privacy shutter which blocked out all light.
However the highlight of the room was the balcony and the view. From the private balcony you have a stunning 180 degree view of the lake and the mountains beyond.
Breakfast is a good buffet although the hot selection is limited to an egg cooked to order. Sometimes they forgot to ask us if we wanted an egg. What detracted from the breakfast was being asked every morning whether we wanted to book a table for dinner that night. We ate on our first night and were planning to enjoy a second meal (refer to separate restaurant review) but on principle ate elsewhere after they kept pushing it at breakfast. They could also be quite regimented about the opening time although they seemed to be more flexible when a large group was breakfasting there. It was not a great impression entering the room at 7.30 but being told to give them 5 minutes as they were still vacuuming and mopping the floor.
Parking is offsite at a public car park just up the road. This is typically quite cramped and on some days when it was busy in St Wolfgang we were lucky to grab a park. There is a pull off space in front of the hotel to unload the bags.
It was an enjoyable stay apart from these minor inconsistencies although it does feel like it is tailored towards guests who want to laze about and enjoy the hotel rather than those who are exploring the region.

Room Tip: Go to the hotel website as it has excellent 360 degree videos of each of the suites and lots of info...

We picked this hotel mainly due it's direct access to the lake and location which is a few minutes walk to the main centre.

We had a lake view double with balcony, definitely worth paying extra for especially as the balcony gets the sun all day.

The rooms are all individual and a little different to the Austrian norm. Great shower with Molton Brown toiletries.

There are plenty of sun loungers available on the lawned area that leads directly to the lake. A member of staff will come and take orders and bring to your sun lounger, my only minor criticism is that the frequency could sometimes be a bit hit and miss depending on the member of staff.

Breakfast served quality food with the option to eat outside on the decked area. The only hot option was egg based (which seems to be the way in most Austrian hotels).

I would suggest a separate area outside for smokers, as some mornings it detracted from what would have otherwise a great experience. I know smoking is still permitted in bars/restaurants in Austria but I really do not want to suffer second hand smoke whilst trying to eat.

Staff were always polite and attentive, overall a fantastic stay.

Clean rooms, extremely attentive and professional staff, fantastic breakfast enjoyed outside with a beautiful view of the lake every morning, drinks and food brought to your deck chair while you sun bathe and swim in the surprisingly warm crystal clear lake, affordable gourmet restaurant with terrific wine selection, and no children allowed! There is no need to leave the hotel!

I went to St wolfgang as a last minute decision. I arrived by bus from Bad Ischl. I had no reservation. I just though I do not want to drag my stuff around and I will take the first hotel I see. I entered the Cortisen. The reception area was nice. And immediately you see the interior design is warm and with personal touch. The lady at the disk asked me to see the rooms available and choose what I like. It was magnificent in a settle way. I was planning to stay a day and I ended staying for 3 nights and I would have stayed longer if I had more time. Every room is different. The furnishing is modern and esthetic. The room had all these gadgets that I did not see in 5 star hotels, a flat screen TV, not much english channels though, DVD, music/radio box, iPod with speaker charger. there is a balcony over looking the lake. Nice amenities available in the washroom. the place is spotless clean. The staff are amazing. The breakfast was really good. Mr Roland, the owner and manger really impressed me with his very courteous attitude. He lent me his backpack and hiking sticks to use as I was hiking up in the mountains. He provided the maps and instructions. I really had a great time. It felt personal and familiar. The hotel had original paintings all over.. it would be great to have ability to make coffee and tea in the room as it would be nice to read at night in the balcony. One can not stay for extended period as the price could be an issue but I will definitely like to go back for longer time. The outer terrace is at the edge of the lake. I would imagine it would be terrific in summer.
