Chose this hotel for a three-day stay with my mother in Autumn 2009, en route from Vienna to Salzburg. Was a bit nervous about spending so much money and about the walk into the town from the hotel but I was so glad to have booked here. Relaxing in the extreme. Superb staff, I really can't speak highly enough of how professional and welcoming they were. Beautiful decor - tasteful, cosy and elegant without being superplush - like staying in the the house of a rich friend, a comparison I think has been made before. The food was great, although on one evening we weren't able to dine there as we were the only guests. We were taken by car to a hotel in the village instead which was fine but neither the ambience nor the food was up to the standard of the Landhaus. You could easily while away several days here just swimming in the lake, sitting out in the sun, playing tennis or table tennis, using the sauna and taking the boats out on the lake. We had one of the cheaper rooms with a lake view but if you can't afford a lake view don't worry, the communal areas and the balcony are very pleasant places to hang out if you want the view. The walk into and back from town was a bit tedious, but not that hard work even for my mother who doesn't like to walk far. My only, tiny, quibble is that the hotel is not quite far enough away from the road for you to forget entirely that it's there.

My husband and I spent 3 wonderfully restful days at the Landhaus zu Appesbach. We had driven from the hustle and bustle of Vienna (also terrific but still a city) and on arrival we were delighted with the country house on the lake waiting for us. The staff was very helpful and friendly... you feel as though you are in a private house, everything is kept quiet and the staff is not intrusive. May is an excellent time to be in the Salzkammergut area- there were few tourists, so we were happy with that. Because of the slower time, we were able to get a table by the window overlooking the lake each night and very attentive service but that, I imagine, would not be possible during the summer months as the dining room is small.. Dinners were excellent as were the breakfasts. We also liked that the house was not in town amidst all the retail shops...its just a short 10 minute walk to the downtown area... We would most definitely go back.

My wife and I have just spent 5 days there, having stayed in this hotel in 1982. Everything about the hotel is of the best quality. From the moment we arrived and Christian showed us around to the time we left, nothing was too much trouble. The food and ambiance in the dining room is fantastic - inspired chefs, excellent service. We really enjoyed the salad buffet at the beginning of dinner. Breakfast consisted of a buffet with a great variety of fruit, cerelas and roles - eggs also available. The rooms were great, although my own preference is for carpets in bedrooms - quieter and you don't hear movement above and near you. A very quiet location but only a short walk into St Wolfgang where there are some quaint shops and, of course, the famous White Horse Inn. We popped our noses into it but concluded that we were very happy with the homely atmosphere of the Landhau zu Appesbach. Relly worth a stay - next time we will go in summer.

We stayed 5 days at Appesbach, and it was an amazing stay! Upon arrival, we got a tour of "the house" from Mary Ann. The place is beautiful and HUGE! We kept finding new nooks and gardens. The 1st night we stayed in Room 6. It was lovely with a side view of the mountains and lake and looking directly over the gardens. The rest of the nights we upgraded to a balcony room (# 25). This room was bigger with AMAZING views, although a little warmer during the summer days. We were told it was abnormally hot for that time of the year.
The hotel has boats to use and docks for swimming. The water was cold and perfect! So refreshing after a long walk. We ate dinner at the hotel every night, and it was super. The meals were sophisticated and delicious-running about 20 Euro per person. Included starters, soups, salad bar, entree, desert, and bread and cheese bar to follow. In my opinion well worth 20E. Dining was also on the veranda with amazing sunset views over the water. Ahhhhhhh In addition, everyday at 3PM there was tea with homemade treats. Lemon tarts, sacher tortes, cakes and pies! YUMMMM and it was free. Nice touch.
The walk to town was about 10 mins (uphill!), but the town is sooo cute you don't mind. The walk back was easy (downhill) after a day of sightseeing. You are also given a key to the outside door in case you want to stay out late.
One diamond in this hotel was Mary Ann!!! She made our stay extra special by giving us tips and ideas each day. She helped us with everything from Internet to travel plans. She even searched and found a bus and train schedule for us, printed it out and explained how to make out connections to Germany the day we had to leave. Mary Ann is absolutely a necessity here. She was welcoming and had answers to all questions we had. Over and above and often when she was already VERY busy. Thanks Mary Ann!
Finally, this hotel is tranquil and although some road noise in the evening, it was a perfect relaxing hotel that felt like you were staying in a friend's mansion and you practically had it to yourself.
We will definitely come back soon!

1 Tip for downtown. Try "Hannelore"s Pub. It's a tiny place with tons of atmosphere and locals. Tell Hannelore that the Fireman from the States sent you there on Trip Advisor.

We stayed there as a family with our 2 daughters (7 and 3) as well as my mother in law. A wonderful time.was had by all. Service: unsurpassed. Rooms: I think they vary greatly. We stayed in the Windsor suite which was great. my mother in law stayed in one of the "apartments" at the back of the hotel which was in fact 2 adjoining bedrooms. Compared to ours, it was a little disappointing. Ambience: Very friendly, cosy and relaxed. Were surprised to see many families with young children. Before going, we were a bit worried it might be stuffy and not child friendly but needn' t have been at all concerned. Food: Breakfast was good, but the same every day. We had booked the half board which was very good value and very tasty on 2 of the 3 nights we dined there. On the Sunday night it was not as great which led us to believe there may have been a substitute chef. You can also dine at a partner hotel in St. Wolfgang which was not as pleasant experience as dining in the Landhaus but it was a nice change and the motor boat ride to the partner hotel offered to us by the hotel was great! You are also offered to dine at a nearby farm instead of at the hotel, but we did not try it. Included is tea and cakes from 3-5 which was a nice idea but the cakes were not as good quality as the other meals. Location: Setting is the best in St Wolfgang without exception. It is, however, a good 15 minute walk to the village and a lot of it is uphill which is not ideal with kids, pushchairs, etc... But the hotel offered us complementary rides in their car to and from the village. which made the location not an issue. The only very slight drawback is that the hotel is located on a main road and you can hear the cars from the garden (but not from the lakeside). This is only minor but while there you feel you are so remotely cut off in such an idyllic setting that the sound of a car every now and then brings you back to reality. Activities: There are reowing boats, motor boats, a teampoline, swings, a sauna and daily events organised by the hotel such as walks, piano recitals and boat trips. Luckily the weather was excellent...A truly wonderful place!
