“Too big”
Review of Minnesota Zoo

There is a lot to offer in the way of education at the zoo but it is so big that it takes a long time to get between exhibits and I find it especially hard for my kids to feel like they have had an experience being all the animals are so far from the people.

Our family took a trip to Minnesota in early October. It was still early enough that it wasn't too cold, so my kids (boys ages 9,7, and 6) decided they wanted to check out the Minnesota Zoo. We absolutely LOVED this zoo. The zoo itself was quite large, and there were animals that we hadn't seen at other zoos. All of the exhibits are wonderful, and the animals are obviously well cared for. The exhibits are spacious and closely resemble the natural habitats of their inhabitants. In every exhibit, we were able to see the animals as opposed to other zoos where we've sometimes had a hard time seeing the animals in the exhibits.

My boys really loved the Grizzly Coast - the bears come up close to the window and are quite interactive with observers. We sat on a ledge near a large picture window, and the bears came right up to the window and nuzzled the glass. The tiger exhibit was great too - and there were new tiger cubs that had just been born that were out and about with their mother.

There is also a fun little playground in the park. My boys loved this area - it was small, but when it's 40 degrees out there aren't too many kids that are running around in the playground area!

One tip though - we paid extra so that we could watch an IMAX movie. The movie theater is actually right off the zoo property, so you have to get a stamp and leave the zoo in order to watch the movie. We watched a movie about the Arctic, which was entertaining, but probably not worth the money. The kids wanted to leave the movie to go back to the zoo!

There's lots of parking at the zoo - costs $6.00 to park but there are no parking attendants! They just ask you when you buy the ticket whether or not you parked your car in the lot, and if you did they tack on a $6.00 fee. There is no attendant checking to make sure you paid, or nobody to give your receipt to. It's kind of refreshing that they would rely on the honor system.

We really enjoyed this zoo, we spent the entire day there (zoo closed at 4:00 pm) and I still feel like we were a little rushed. Would have liked to take more time to wander through the exhibits. I think children of all ages would enjoy this zoo, not just the younger ages.

It is an okay zoo now that the dolphins are gone. Bear exhibit is awesome. Wish they would have more new exhibits.

The Grizzly Coast is one of the finest zoo exhibits we've seen. Get up close with the bears and watch them grab a fish. The tiger exhibit is also very good, especially when the tigers are active. All in all, this is a terrific zoo.

This zoo changes exhibits each year and has some amazing events with dolphins, sharks, wolves etc. I can spend all day by the aquarium. A must visit!
