We had five dishes and except for the fried wontons we couldn't tell one dish from the other. Excepting the soup, the wontons and the tasteless spring rolls, every dish was smothered in a gloppy brown oyster sauce. No nuance, no favors, no finesse. And it was not cheap!

Never again.

Chia Shiang has a very large menu. The food is good and the place is very clean.

No doubt this place has the most authenic spicy chinese food in Ann Arbor. Don't bother going there if your looking for your almond chickens and pepper steaks. Ideally, if you have a Chinese friend who likes spicy food order on your behalf, you will get the real stuff. If you got with a larger party, you have to get the spicy fish or hot pot bowl. Just incredible. The decor is nothing special here. Just good basic family dining.

They have an extensive menu (it's the size of a book). One favorite dish (recommended by the staff) is garlic cucumber (they use raw garlic so it's an acquired taste). They have all the standard fare you've seen before in other Chinese restaurants...and then some more (a lot more!).

Chia Shiang (should be Jia Xiang I think, like hometown) is a true Chinese restaurant - in fact, my Chinese friends had recommended it as such. I had a fish soup with cabbage that was spiced exactly as in China, Sichuan specifically, which is what they serve here - very very hot, and I still don't know the English word for the cabbage - leaf and roots - they used. I also saw other guests getting big portions of peashoots exactly as I know them to be served in China, where each dish is separately served, not a mix of things on one plate, to be eaten family style. My husband had a vegetarian dish which was more Americanized - all kinds of vegetables in a spicy but an otherwise standard sauce.

Audience was mixed - half the tables Chinese, half the Tables Caucasian, in groups, and it seems here one eats best with 4 or more people so family style ordering is possible.

The appetizer came significantly AFTER the serving of the main dish (yeah, that can happen in China too, they serve you when they are ready!) was very interesting - tiny pieces of some dark green vegetable mixed with tiny tofy cubes in an interesting sauce which was a little too oily for my taste, but the dish was very tasty.

Price was ok - $35 before tip, and a 6% discount is given if paid by cash.

Portions were huge, so we will have another meal of the leftover which was nearly half.

Many reviews of this restaurant complain about slow and unfriendly service - ours was fast, but we came 5.50 pm. By 6.30, the restaurant was packed and it was clear they were overwhelmed - it was hard to get their attention for the doggie bags and the bill at the end.

No alcohol is served
